Tech Salary in Mumbai 2026: What 9 to 30 LPA Actually Leaves You After Rent
Tech salary in Mumbai runs from Rs 5 to 8 LPA at entry level to Rs 25 to 45 LPA for senior AI and data roles, with BFSI paying the sharpest premium. Rent decides what survives: Powai 2BHKs are advertised at Rs 55,000 to Rs 90,000 a month, so the suburb you pick moves take-home more than a promotion.
- The BFSI premium is real. Mumbai pays above Bengaluru for finance-domain engineering: trading systems, risk, payments and compliance tech, where the supply of people who understand both the code and the regulation is thin.
- City averages mislead you. Glassdoor put the Mumbai data engineer average near Rs 9.4 LPA in July 2026 across 1,488 reported salaries, but that number blends captive bank teams with body-shop staffing roles paying half of it.
- Rent is the second salary negotiation. An entry-level 2BHK in Powai at Rs 55,000 a month costs about Rs 6.6 lakh a year, more than the whole advertised average for a Mumbai cloud engineer.
- Metro Line 3 changed the map. Since October 2025 the full Aqua Line runs Cuffe Parade to Aarey, putting BKC, Marol and SEEPZ on one underground corridor, which quietly widened where you can live and still reach the office.
- The hiring brief has shifted to AI. Industry directories tracking GCC hiring in 2026 report that roughly two in three new roles now ask for AI, data science or automation skills, and Mumbai banks are writing those words into job descriptions for existing teams, not just new ones.
- Navi Mumbai is the arbitrage. Airoli and Mahape hold serious employers at a third of the Powai rent, at the cost of a bridge crossing you will feel every evening.
The offer says 18 LPA, and at 11 at night you are still scrolling a Powai listing, subtracting numbers and wondering whether the jump was real. That arithmetic is the honest version of a Mumbai tech career. Pay here is genuinely good, particularly if you sit near money, and it gets eaten faster than anywhere else in India. This guide is the arithmetic, done properly: what each role is actually advertised at, who is hiring in which part of the city, and what is left on the last day of the month.
Why Mumbai Pays Differently From Bengaluru
Mumbai is not a smaller Bengaluru. It is a financial centre that happens to employ a lot of engineers, and almost everything about the job market follows from that. The interesting work sits inside banks, insurers, brokers, exchanges and the fintechs feeding them, which means the engineer who can read a settlement flow or explain why a model output needs an audit trail is worth more here than the engineer with a slightly better LeetCode record.
The scale is larger than most people outside the city assume. GCC directories tracking the market in 2026 count more than 200 global capability centres operating in Mumbai, with BKC and Powai taking the bulk of new leases and expansions, and Apple having expanded its BKC office footprint in 2025. Mumbai accounts for roughly 11 percent of India's GCC hiring, growing about 8 percent year on year, which is slower than Hyderabad but attached to much better paying domains.
Mumbai tech demand in three numbers
The market is deep, concentrated in finance, and spreading outward from the old office districts.
Figures checked on 17 September 2026. Job board counts move daily and include duplicate and agency listings.
Here is the caveat nobody selling you a Mumbai move will mention. If your ambition is frontier product engineering, the kind where you own a consumer-scale system or work near model training, the bench in this city is thinner than Bengaluru's and you will find fewer peers to learn from. Mumbai rewards applied engineering inside a regulated business. That is a real specialisation with real money behind it, and it is not the same career.
Tech Salary in Mumbai 2026: Bands by Role and Experience
Start by throwing out the headline averages. Glassdoor's Mumbai software engineer average sat around Rs 7.75 lakh in 2026 and Indeed's around Rs 8.25 lakh, both below the national figure, which sounds absurd until you remember that Mumbai has an enormous base of services and staffing roles that drag the mean down. The same Glassdoor data shows the 75th percentile near Rs 13.6 lakh and the 90th near Rs 25.9 lakh. Your target is the top of that distribution, and the table below is written for it.
| Role | 0 to 2 years | 3 to 6 years | 7 to 12 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data analyst (BI, reporting) | Rs 4 to 7 LPA | Rs 8 to 14 LPA | Rs 15 to 24 LPA |
| Data engineer | Rs 6 to 9 LPA | Rs 12 to 20 LPA | Rs 22 to 36 LPA |
| Cloud or DevOps engineer | Rs 5 to 8 LPA | Rs 11 to 18 LPA | Rs 20 to 32 LPA |
| AI or ML engineer | Rs 7 to 12 LPA | Rs 15 to 26 LPA | Rs 28 to 45 LPA |
| Backend engineer, bank or fintech product | Rs 6 to 10 LPA | Rs 13 to 22 LPA | Rs 24 to 40 LPA |
| Risk, quant or trading platform engineer | Rs 9 to 15 LPA | Rs 18 to 32 LPA | Rs 35 to 60 LPA |
Advertised ranges assembled from Glassdoor and Indeed Mumbai pages and current job board listings checked on 17 September 2026. These are market ranges, not guarantees, and the top of each band assumes a GCC or product employer rather than a staffing contract.
Data engineer salary in Mumbai
Glassdoor's Mumbai page, based on 1,488 reported salaries as of July 2026, puts the data engineer average at about Rs 9.37 lakh, with the 25th to 75th percentile band running roughly Rs 5.6 lakh to Rs 14.5 lakh and the 90th percentile near Rs 20 lakh. The split inside that band is almost entirely about platform. People maintaining SSIS packages and nightly extracts sit at the bottom. People who own a lakehouse, write production Spark or PySpark, and can explain lineage to an auditor sit at the top, and in a Mumbai bank the audit conversation is not optional. The certification that maps to this work is DP-700, which is what a live Microsoft Fabric data engineering program is built around, pipelines, lakehouse modelling and Fabric governance practised in class rather than read about.
AI engineer jobs in Mumbai and what they pay
Naukri listed 6,193 artificial intelligence vacancies for Mumbai on the day this guide was written. Read fifty of them and a pattern shows up fast: most are not research roles. They are retrieval systems over policy documents, agents that pull from core banking APIs, copilots for underwriting and claims, and the plumbing to keep all of it logged. That is applied AI engineering, and it is why the pay band starts higher than general backend work even at two years of experience. If you want the build side of that, retrieval, tool use, evaluation and agent orchestration, it is the core of 360DT's AI Engineer course, taught live rather than as recorded theory.
The Mumbai pay ladder for a data or AI engineer
Where the jumps actually happen, and roughly what each one is worth.
Year 0 to 2
Year 2 to 5
Year 5 to 8
Year 8 to 12
Illustrative progression built from advertised Mumbai ranges checked on 17 September 2026, not an outcome claim. The year 2 to 5 jump is the one that depends most on switching employer type.
The single largest pay event in a Mumbai career is not a promotion. It is the move from a services or staffing payroll onto a bank's captive payroll or a fintech product team, and it usually happens between years two and five. Wait past year seven and the market starts pricing you as a services architect, which is a lower ceiling in this city.

Which Companies Are Behind GCC Jobs in Mumbai
GCC jobs in Mumbai cluster tightly by geography, and knowing which cluster a company sits in tells you more about the job than the title does. The BFSI captives of BKC and Lower Parel run trading, risk and payments platforms. The Powai and Andheri belt mixes product companies with large consulting delivery. Airoli and Mahape carry the heavy operational engineering.
| Hub | Employers with offices there | What that cluster hires for | Commute note |
|---|---|---|---|
| BKC and Lower Parel | JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Apple | Trading and risk platforms, payments, cyber, quant tooling, data governance | On Metro Line 3, the best connected cluster in the city |
| Powai | Amazon, Cognizant, Deloitte, HDFC digital teams, mid-size product firms | Product engineering, cloud, analytics, platform teams | Road only, JVLR and Eastern Express, no metro station at the door yet |
| SEEPZ and Marol, Andheri East | SEZ IT and electronics units, captive back offices | Application development, support engineering, ERP and integration work | Aqua Line terminus area, strong airport access |
| Airoli and Mahape, Navi Mumbai | Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant and other Mindspace and Gigaplex tenants | Managed services, infrastructure, testing, large delivery teams | Cheapest rent, hardest bridge crossing at peak |
| Goregaon and Malad | Nesco IT Park and Mindspace Malad tenants | Media tech, BPM, mid-market SaaS, shared services | Western line dependent, painful eastward commutes |
Office locations compiled from Mumbai IT park and GCC directories checked on 17 September 2026. Presence of an office is not a claim that a company is currently hiring for a specific role.
A worked example: what a bank expansion looks like from the outside
JPMorgan is the clearest case to study, because its Mumbai plans are public. Reporting in 2026 describes an India footprint of roughly 55,000 employees across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Noida and GIFT City, with a long horizon Mumbai campus plan targeted at the end of the decade and hiring focused on software engineering, payments technology, risk modelling, cloud and cybersecurity. The useful lesson is not the headcount. It is what a campus bet does to the rest of the market: it pulls senior people out of nearby banks, which opens mid-level seats at those banks, which is where a candidate with three to six years of experience should be aiming. Watch the second order vacancy, not the announcement.
Second, note where the postings are moving. Apna's hiring data, reported in September 2026, found that satellite markets accounted for 44.1 percent of Mumbai BFSI job postings in FY26, with growth in credit, fintech, insurance and customer facing technology roles. Thane, Navi Mumbai and the far suburbs are no longer the consolation prize.

Mumbai's Tech Hubs: BKC, Powai, SEEPZ, Airoli and Goregaon
The full Aqua Line, Metro Line 3, has been running end to end since October 2025 with all 27 stations open, from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR, with services from about 5:55 in the morning to 10:30 at night and an interchange with Line 1 at Marol Naka. It connects the financial core to the airport and the Andheri East office belt underground, which in Mumbai terms is close to a new city. If your office is on that line, your housing search just got much wider. If it is in Powai, it did not change much at all.
How Mumbai's office clusters connect
Pick the cluster first, then the suburb, because the link between them is the part you cannot change later.
Cluster and connectivity facts checked on 17 September 2026. Travel times are typical peak-hour estimates, not scheduled journey times.
The practical rule most people learn the expensive way: choose your cluster before you choose your flat, and treat the connection between them as a fixed cost you are signing up for. A Kandivali to BKC daily run is survivable on paper and grinding in practice. Vikhroli or Ghatkopar to Powai is twenty minutes and almost nobody outside the city considers it.
Cost of Living in Mumbai for IT Professionals: Is a Tech Salary in Mumbai Enough?
Rent in Mumbai is not a line item. It is the thing your package is measured against, and in the mid suburbs it has moved sharply, with reports of 15 to 20 percent increases in areas like Bandra, Andheri and Powai since 2023. Current listings put a standard society 2BHK in Powai at roughly Rs 55,000 to Rs 90,000 a month, with premium Hiranandani stock well above that, and the broader Andheri, Powai and Goregaon mid-range band running from about Rs 40,000 upward.
The number that decides your Mumbai move
Annual rent on an entry-level Powai 2BHK, set against the advertised average for a Mumbai cloud engineer.
A 2BHK at Rs 55,000 a month costs about Rs 6.6 lakh a year, which is more than the Rs 6.07 lakh average Glassdoor reported for a Mumbai cloud engineer in June 2026 across 266 salaries. The average engineer cannot afford the average flat, which is why shared housing and the eastern suburbs do so much work here.
Rent listings and Glassdoor averages checked on 17 September 2026.
A realistic monthly budget at three pay levels
Treat the following as an illustrative scenario rather than anyone's actual finances. Take three engineers, all sharing nothing, all living alone, all wanting a twenty minute commute.
At Rs 9 LPA, take-home lands near Rs 62,000 to Rs 66,000 a month. A Powai 2BHK is out of reach. A 1BHK in Chembur, Vikhroli or Airoli at Rs 22,000 to Rs 30,000 is the honest option, and after transport, food and a deposit that ate your savings, you are saving perhaps Rs 8,000 a month. At Rs 18 LPA, take-home is roughly Rs 1.15 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh. Now a Rs 45,000 flat works, and you save meaningfully for the first time, provided you did not sign for Bandra. At Rs 30 LPA, around Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 1.95 lakh a month in hand, Mumbai finally behaves like a high-income city and the rent stops being the dominant variable.
The gap between the first and second of those is where careers are actually made in this city, and it is roughly a four-year, one-employer-switch distance. That is the whole argument for pushing hard on skills early rather than waiting for an annual cycle to do it for you.
Remote and hybrid, honestly
Most Mumbai BFSI captives are not remote-first and will not become so, because a lot of this work touches regulated data and supervised environments. Three days in office is the common pattern, and for trading-adjacent teams it is often five. What has genuinely opened up is the reverse arrangement: living in Mumbai and working remotely for a Bengaluru or overseas employer. If you want the Mumbai salary premium without the Mumbai office, target product companies rather than banks, and expect to prove yourself in person for the first six months anyway.
- You negotiate CTC, not take-home. Mumbai offers pad heavily with variable pay and retention bonuses. Ask for the fixed component in writing before you compare two offers, because a 22 LPA offer with 25 percent variable loses to an 18 LPA fixed offer for anyone paying rent.
- You sign a lease before the joining date. Brokerage plus deposit in Mumbai routinely runs five to seven months of rent up front. Stay somewhere temporary for the first month and learn your real commute before committing.
- You optimise for the BKC address. A prestigious building is not a good team. Ask what system you will own, not which floor you will sit on.
- You treat domain knowledge as optional. The engineers who stall at 15 LPA in this city are almost always the ones who never learned what a reconciliation break or a KYC flag actually is.
Skills and Certifications Mumbai Employers Actually Ask For
Read enough Mumbai job descriptions and the stack narrows to something fairly predictable. Cloud is Azure-first in the banks and AWS-first in the fintechs. Data work lives on Spark, SQL and increasingly a lakehouse. The AI requirement has stopped being a nice-to-have and shows up now in job descriptions for teams that have existed for a decade, with industry directories tracking 2026 GCC hiring reporting that close to two thirds of new roles carry an AI, data science or automation requirement.
| Skill or certification | Where Mumbai asks for it | Worth prioritising? |
|---|---|---|
| AZ-305 and AZ-400 | Bank captives, insurers, regulated workloads on Azure | Yes if you are targeting BFSI. Azure architect and DevOps track |
| SAA-C03 and DOP-C02 | Fintech, payments, consumer product teams | Yes for the fintech belt. AWS architect and DevOps track |
| DP-700 and Microsoft Fabric | Data platform modernisation in insurers and mid-size banks | Rising fast in Mumbai job posts |
| PL-300 and Power BI | Finance, risk reporting, MIS teams everywhere | The cheapest entry point into a bank. Data analyst course |
| RAG and agent engineering | Policy search, claims, underwriting copilots | The highest leverage skill in the city right now |
| AB-900 Copilot administration | Enterprise IT rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot under audit | Narrow but under-supplied. AB-900 course |
| AI-300 MLOps | Model risk management and monitoring in larger banks | Only after you have shipped something. MLOps engineer course |
Now the opinionated part. If you are early in your career in Mumbai and have money for exactly one certification this year, take the cloud one that matches your target employer type, not the AI one. Cloud certifications still clear resume filters at banks in a way AI credentials do not yet, and they are the cheaper signal. The AI work you should demonstrate with a repository and a working demo instead, because that is what the hiring manager will actually poke at. The trade-off I am accepting with that advice is slower entry into the most interesting roles, in exchange for a much higher chance of getting through the first screen at all.
One credential I would not rush in Mumbai specifically: an advanced architecture certification taken before you have run anything in production. It reads as theory in an interview with a bank platform lead, and they will find out in ten minutes. The CCAR-F foundations track is the sensible order for agent architecture, and the full certifications overview lays out which exam sits at which stage.
Your First 90 Days in the Mumbai Market
Carry one running example through this: a 2019 batch Java developer at a broking firm in Lower Parel, on Rs 11 LPA, competent, bored, and watching AI show up in every job posting they read. Here is what the next ninety days should look like for them, and for you.
Weeks 1 to 3. Pick the cluster, not the company. Decide whether you are aiming at BFSI captives, fintech product, or Navi Mumbai delivery, because the skill investments diverge. Rewrite the resume around systems owned rather than technologies touched. For the broking developer, that means leading with order flow, latency and reconciliation, which is domain gold and is currently buried under a Spring Boot bullet list.
Weeks 4 to 8. Build one thing that would matter to a Mumbai employer, not a generic chatbot. A retrieval system over SEBI circulars or your own firm's public policy documents, with evaluation and citations, is a better interview asset than three tutorials. Keep it small and finish it. Push it to GitHub with a readme that explains the failure modes you hit, because senior interviewers read that section first.
Weeks 9 to 12. Start applying laterally through people, not portals. The Mumbai BFSI tech market runs on referrals to an unusual degree, and the fastest route in is the colleague who left your firm eighteen months ago. Go to something in person: the IIT Bombay campus in Powai hosts a steady stream of technical events, and the fintech meetups around BKC and Lower Parel are where hiring managers actually turn up. Then negotiate on fixed pay, having read the pitfalls box above.
The Call I Would Make
If you are already in Mumbai with two to six years of experience, stay and specialise. The BFSI premium is the most durable pay advantage available to an Indian engineer right now, and the AI work landing in banks this year is the best chance in a decade to move from maintaining systems to building them. If you are considering moving to Mumbai from a smaller city for a package under about 14 LPA, do the rent arithmetic first and then negotiate again, because that number is worth less here than it looks and nobody will tell you so during the offer call.
Either way, the skill that pays for the flat is applied AI engineering on top of a domain you understand. If you want that taught live rather than watched, the AI Engineer course is the next step, and the classes run Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 11 PM, which is local Mumbai time since the schedule is IST.
Build the agentic AI skills Mumbai banks and fintechs are hiring for
Sixteen weeks of live training in generative AI, RAG and AI agents, certified on both Microsoft Copilot Studio and Claude, the two stacks Mumbai job postings keep naming. Classes run Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 11 PM IST, which is 8 to 11 PM in Mumbai.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good tech salary in Mumbai in 2026?
For a comfortable single professional lifestyle in the eastern or mid suburbs, Rs 15 to 18 LPA is the realistic threshold, because that is roughly where a Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000 rent stops dominating take-home. Below Rs 10 LPA you will almost certainly be sharing a flat or living far out. Above Rs 30 LPA the city stops being the constraint.
Is Mumbai better than Bengaluru for a tech career?
It depends on what you want to build. Mumbai pays better for finance-domain engineering, trading systems, risk, payments and compliance technology, and the BFSI captives here are deeper than anywhere else in India. Bengaluru has more product companies, more startups and a much larger peer group for general software and AI research work. Rent is higher in Mumbai at almost every level.
How much does a data engineer earn in Mumbai?
Glassdoor's Mumbai page reported an average near Rs 9.37 lakh in July 2026 from 1,488 salaries, with a 25th to 75th percentile band of roughly Rs 5.6 lakh to Rs 14.5 lakh and a 90th percentile near Rs 20 lakh. Engineers on modern lakehouse stacks inside bank captives sit at the top of that range, and legacy ETL maintenance sits at the bottom.
Which areas in Mumbai are best for IT professionals to live in?
Match the suburb to the office cluster. For BKC and Lower Parel, anywhere on Metro Line 3 works. For Powai, look at Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg and Chandivali. For Airoli or Mahape, Navi Mumbai itself is far cheaper than crossing the bridge daily. For Goregaon and Malad, stay on the Western line.
Are there AI engineer jobs in Mumbai or only in Bengaluru?
There are plenty. Naukri listed 6,193 artificial intelligence vacancies for Mumbai when checked on 17 September 2026, though board counts include duplicates and agency postings. The difference is the nature of the work: Mumbai roles are overwhelmingly applied, retrieval over documents, agents over banking APIs and copilots for claims and underwriting, rather than model research.
Can a fresher get a tech job in Mumbai without a referral?
Yes, but the fastest path is through the large delivery employers in Airoli, Mahape and Malad rather than directly into a bank captive. Take that role, learn the domain for eighteen to thirty months, then switch onto a captive payroll. That first switch is usually worth more than any fresher offer you could have negotiated.
Do Mumbai employers require cloud certifications?
Banks and insurers use them as screening filters more than fintechs do, and Azure credentials appear more often than AWS in BFSI job posts here. They will not get you hired on their own, but they do get your resume past the first round when hundreds of applications arrive for one opening.
What timing do 360DT live classes run at for someone in Mumbai?
