Career & Salary · 2026Generative AI Developer Salary in India 2026: Pay Bands by Experience, Employer Tier and the Skills That Move Them
Generative AI developer salary in India 2026 typically runs between ₹6 and ₹12 LPA at entry level, ₹12 to ₹25 LPA at two to five years, and ₹25 to ₹45 LPA beyond five, based on advertised ranges behind the 4,935 generative AI engineer openings Glassdoor listed in India in August 2026. Employer tier moves those bands more than experience does.
- Employer tier beats experience. A four year developer at a GCC and a four year developer at a services firm sit roughly eleven lakh apart on the same skill set.
- Entry is the hardest door. Indeed India listed around 300 "generative AI fresher" vacancies against Glassdoor's 4,935 total GenAI engineer openings.
- The title churns, the skill does not. Postings titled "Prompt Engineer" are down roughly 40% from their 2023 peak while prompt engineering as a listed skill kept climbing.
- Evaluation is the pay lever. Anyone can demo. Senior bands cluster around people who can prove accuracy did not drift after release.
- Certification buys access, not a raise. AI-103 gets a CV past a filter. Production work sets the band.
You shipped a retrieval prototype in three weeks, your director demoed it to the board, and now a recruiter wants a number. Every site quotes something different and the spread is too wide to use. That spread is real, but it is not random: it tracks employer tier and proof of production work.
Generative AI Developer Salary in India 2026, by Experience Band
Fix one thing before reading the table. This title covers two jobs. One wires an LLM into a product through an API and a vector store. The other owns evaluation, cost, latency and failure behaviour for something customers touch. Same advertised title, roughly twice the pay.
| Experience | Services and mid-tier | Product and GCC | What listings demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1 year | ₹4.5 to ₹8 LPA | ₹8 to ₹15 LPA | Python, one framework, a deployed project |
| 2 to 3 years | ₹8 to ₹16 LPA | ₹15 to ₹28 LPA | RAG in production, basic evals |
| 4 to 6 years | ₹14 to ₹24 LPA | ₹24 to ₹42 LPA | Agent orchestration, token cost control |
| 7 to 9 years | ₹20 to ₹34 LPA | ₹35 to ₹60 LPA | Multi-model design, audit posture, lead |
| 10 years and above | ₹28 to ₹45 LPA | ₹45 to ₹70 LPA and above | Platform ownership, vendor negotiation |
Collection basis: advertised ranges and employer-reported bands read on 15 September 2026 from Glassdoor India, Naukri, LinkedIn Jobs and foundit. These are ranges employers advertise, not guarantees of any offer. Bands widen above seven years as variable pay and equity start to dominate.
Advertised band midpoints by experience
Where the middle of the market sits once services and product listings are blended.
Midpoints computed from the advertised ranges in the table above, checked 15 September 2026. A midpoint reads the market; it is not an offer anyone should expect.
The 4 to 6 year row is where hiring is heaviest: managers would rather teach RAG to a backend engineer who already understands releases and on-call than teach deployment discipline to someone whose portfolio is notebooks. Also read: AI Engineer vs Machine Learning Engineer in 2026.
Generative AI Developer Salary in India by Company Type
This is the table that explains the spread. Public aggregator data puts GenAI engineers at TCS in roughly the ₹8 to ₹18 LPA range and Infosys around ₹7 to ₹20 LPA, while senior LLM engineers at product companies are reported between ₹35 and ₹60 LPA. Same title, same years. No amount of skill-building closes that gap if you stay put.
| Employer type | 3 to 6 yrs | 7 yrs and above | What you trade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian IT services | ₹9 to ₹18 LPA | ₹20 to ₹35 LPA | Lower ceiling, widest set of open seats |
| Global Capability Centre | ₹18 to ₹32 LPA | ₹35 to ₹65 LPA | Slow loops, strong preference for product work |
| Product company | ₹20 to ₹35 LPA | ₹35 to ₹60 LPA and above | Four to six rounds including a design deep dive |
| Funded AI startup | ₹14 to ₹30 LPA plus equity | ₹30 to ₹55 LPA plus equity | Cash below GCC level, illiquid equity, runway risk |
| Contract or consulting | ₹1.2 to ₹2.5 lakh per month | ₹2.5 to ₹4.5 lakh per month | No benefits, no notice protection, gaps between roles |
Collection basis: advertised ranges and employer-reported bands read on 15 September 2026 across Glassdoor India, Naukri, LinkedIn Jobs and public compensation aggregators. Contract figures are monthly professional fees, not CTC, and carry no statutory benefits. Advertised ranges are not guarantees.
Reporting across those sources consistently puts GCC and AI-native product employers 40% to 70% above IT services pay at equivalent experience.
The honest caveat about startup equity
Startup offers here lead with a paper valuation for the equity. For an early-stage private Indian company that paper is worth nothing until a liquidity event that may never arrive. If a startup offer sits ₹8 lakh below a GCC offer and the recruiter closes the gap with ESOPs, you are funding their payroll from your own cash flow. Price it as a bet.
Generative AI Engineer Salary for Freshers: What Entry Level Really Looks Like
Glassdoor listed 4,935 generative AI engineer jobs in India in August 2026. Indeed India's fresher-filtered search returned roughly 300. That ratio is the whole story: demand is real, the entry door is narrow.
Advertised fresher bands cluster at ₹6 to ₹12 LPA, reaching ₹15 LPA where the listing asks for demonstrable project work over a degree. Demonstrable means a deployed app with a URL a reviewer can open, a written measurement of how it performs, and an honest note on where it breaks. A repository of notebooks is not that.
- Pick documents nobody has RAG-ed to death. Municipal tender papers, insurance policy wordings, GST circulars. Anything but a research PDF.
- Hand-write 50 evaluation questions with known answers before you build. That artefact separates you from the other applicants.
- Ship it, then break it. Record behaviour at 200 concurrent requests and token spend per query. Both numbers go in the README.
- One resume line: "Deployed retrieval over 4,200 GST circulars; hand-built a 50 question eval set; raised answer accuracy from 61% to 84% via hybrid search and re-ranking."
That line works because it carries a before number, an after number, and the change between them. If you cannot fill those three slots, the project is not finished. 360DT's AI Engineer course spends its live sessions on exactly that loop, because measurement is the step almost everyone skips.
GenAI Developer Jobs in India 2026: Where the Openings Actually Are
What the boards showed this month
Openings concentrate in skill keywords, not in the job title.
Counts read from each board's listing page, checked 15 September 2026. Board counts include duplicates and reposts, so read them as direction rather than headcount.
More openings mention RAG than carry the title "generative AI engineer", because the work has spread into roles titled backend engineer, platform engineer and solution architect. Searching by job title is the wrong way to find these jobs. Search the skill.
The sharper signal: postings titled "Prompt Engineer" have fallen roughly 40% from their 2023 peak while LinkedIn postings tagging prompt engineering as a skill grew steeply. Titles here churn; the skills underneath consolidate. Also read: Retrieval Augmented Generation Explained in 2026.
What Actually Drives the Top of the Band
Four things separate a ₹16 LPA offer from a ₹30 LPA offer at identical experience. None of them is a certificate.
The four levers on the top of the band
Ranked by how much movement each one produces in an offer conversation.
Evaluation you can show
Everyone demos. Almost nobody answers "how do you know it did not get worse after the last change?" Bring a regression suite for prompts and retrieval with numbers over time.
Highest impactCost and latency control
Your per-query token spend, your p95 latency, and the two changes that cut them: caching, model routing, context trimming. Finance teams started asking, so interviewers now ask too.
In every loopA domain you know cold
Claims, lending, pharmacovigilance, trade surveillance. Generic GenAI skill is commodity now. GenAI plus a regulated domain is not, and regulated domains pay the top of every band.
Biggest multiplierThe chair you sit in
Reread the employer table. Moving from services to a GCC with identical skills shifts your band more than another year of experience will. Least technical lever, most powerful.
StructuralRanking reflects what hiring managers and recruiters emphasise in current Indian GenAI job descriptions, reviewed 15 September 2026.
A negotiation script that does not overreach
Say this, then stop talking and let the pause sit.
"Thanks for the offer. Here is where I am anchored. Roles asking for production RAG plus evaluation ownership at my level are advertised on Naukri and LinkedIn between ₹X and ₹Y, and I checked those ranges this week. My last two quarters were on [the system], where I took accuracy from A to B and cut per-query cost by C percent. Given that, I am looking at ₹Z fixed. Is there room to get there?"
It cites a range with a source and a date instead of a demand, ties the ask to a delivered number rather than tenure, and ends on a question the recruiter can say yes to. What usually goes wrong here is that people name a number and then keep talking, filling the silence with justifications until they have negotiated against themselves.
Does the AI-103 Certification Change Your Advertised Band?
Not directly, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. What it does is survive the keyword filter between your CV and a human, which matters more than it should when a posting draws 900 applicants. Take the current version: AI-102 retired on 30 June 2026 and AI-103, Developing AI Apps and Agents on Azure, replaced it with a different centre of gravity. Microsoft's skills-measured page, effective 16 April 2026, puts "Implement generative AI and agentic solutions" at 30% to 35% of the exam, the largest domain, with "Plan and manage an Azure AI solution" at 25% to 30% and three smaller domains at 10% to 15% each. Study from AI-102 material and roughly half your effort points at the wrong things.

My view: take AI-103 if your employer runs on Azure or you are targeting GCCs, where Microsoft credentials carry real weight at screening. Skip it if you are aiming at AI-native startups, where nobody asks and a working system does all the work. For the vendor-neutral half, the CCAR-F architect foundations track covers agent design patterns without tying you to one cloud, and the certifications overview shows how the tracks fit together. 360DT's Generative AI Developer course runs AI-103 preparation and Claude Certified Foundations content together in live weekend sessions.
Composite Case Study: ₹11 LPA Backend Work to a GenAI Developer Seat
This is an illustrative composite built from typical market paths, not a real named individual and not a 360DT student outcome. It shows the shape and the cost of the move, including the parts that do not go smoothly.
A 2019-batch Java developer at a Pune services firm, five years in, on ₹11 LPA, maintaining a Spring Boot claims application for an insurance client. Solid engineer, no ML background, about thirty spare hours a month.
Sixteen months, stage by stage
Note how long the number stays flat before anything moves.
Months 1 to 3
Months 4 to 6
Months 7 to 10
Months 11 to 16
Illustrative band movement for a composite path, built from the advertised ranges in this article and checked 15 September 2026. Not a projection for any individual.
The detail that matters sits in months one to six, where the number does not move at all. That is the real price of this transition and the part missing from every success story.
What he added: Python to a professional standard, one orchestration framework end to end, a hand-built evaluation set over the insurer's own policy wordings, Azure AI Foundry deployment, then AI-103 at around ₹4,865. Total cash outlay under ₹40,000 including training.
What went wrong: the first internal pilot was killed by the client's risk team over data residency, costing two months. Three early applications to product companies were rejected at screening for "no production ML experience", a filter that does not care that RAG is not ML. The insurance domain knowledge got him in, not the Java.
Where he landed: a banking GCC in Pune, generative AI developer, ₹21 LPA fixed, sixteen months after his first line of Python. Not the ₹35 LPA that LinkedIn posts advertise. Also read: Java Developer to AI Engineer in India 2026 for a month-by-month version of this plan.

What Goes Wrong on the Way In
- The flat months run long. Six to nine months of study with no pay change is normal. Budget for a year, not a quarter.
- Lateral entry at the same salary is common. Many people take their first GenAI seat sideways, or accept a small cut for product-company experience. That is a strategy, not a failure.
- Screening filters are blunt. "Production ML experience required" appears on roles that are pure retrieval and API work, so you will be rejected by keyword matching unrelated to your ability.
- The fresher path is genuinely hard. Around 300 fresher-tagged vacancies against nearly 5,000 openings is a steeper climb than course marketing across this industry admits.
- Titles churn. The role you train for may be renamed twice in three years.
One more thing nobody says out loud. If your current job gives you no exposure to a system with real users, side projects do not fully substitute. The fastest route from there is an internal move first, even flat on pay, because "used GenAI at work" and "used GenAI at home" read very differently in a screening call. For the operational half most candidates are missing, the Azure AI Cloud Developer course and the MLOps Engineer course cover deployment and monitoring, and a free webinar tests the material more cheaply than a purchase.
What I Would Do in Your Position
If you are two to six years into a software or data role, move now rather than in 2028, when the skill will be ordinary. Get one real system into production, hand-build the eval set, learn what a query costs, then change employer tier. That last step is worth more than the three before it, which is an uncomfortable thing to publish on a training company's blog and still true.
If you are entering with no engineering background, take the 300-against-5,000 ratio seriously and come in through a Power BI and SQL analyst track or a Microsoft Fabric data engineering programme, where the doors are wider and GenAI work reaches you anyway. If Azure and AI-103 is the route that fits you, the Generative AI Developer course is the next step, and its weekend schedule means you keep the job currently funding the transition.

Frequently asked questions
What is the generative AI developer salary in India in 2026?
Advertised ranges read in September 2026 sit at roughly ₹6 to ₹12 LPA at entry level, ₹12 to ₹25 LPA at two to five years, and ₹25 to ₹45 LPA beyond five, with product companies and GCCs advertising above that and services firms below. These are advertised ranges, not guaranteed outcomes.
What is the generative AI engineer salary for freshers in India?
Advertised fresher bands cluster around ₹6 to ₹12 LPA, reaching ₹15 LPA where the listing explicitly asks for deployed project work. Availability is the harder constraint than pay: fresher-tagged vacancies are a small fraction of total GenAI openings on the major Indian boards.
Am I too old to move into generative AI development at 35?
No. At 35 with a decade of engineering or domain experience you are closer to the profile employers are short of than a 24 year old is. What you should not do is enter as a generalist beginner. Come in through what you already know, because the regulated-domain combination is where the widest advertised bands sit.
Does the AI-103 certification increase your salary?
There is no reliable evidence that a certification alone changes an offer, and you should be sceptical of anyone quoting a percentage. What it demonstrably does is help a CV survive automated screening at Microsoft-aligned employers and GCCs. Treat it as access and let production work do the rest.
Do I need a machine learning background to become a generative AI developer?
For most advertised roles, no. The work is application engineering: retrieval, orchestration, evaluation, cost control and deployment. You will still hit listings demanding "production ML experience" because job descriptions lag reality. Software engineering fundamentals matter far more than having trained a model.
How long does it take to switch from a backend job to a generative AI developer role?
For an experienced developer studying part time, twelve to eighteen months to a role and band change is realistic, with the first six to nine months typically showing no pay movement at all. Anyone quoting ninety days is describing a course length, not a career transition.
