Data Engineer Course: Microsoft Fabric & DP-700 Certification

Microsoft Fabric DP-700 and DP-900, with Claude as your data engineering copilot

  • Microsoft retired DP-203 and rebuilt the data engineering track on Fabric. DP-700 tests Fabric rather than Synapse, OneLake rather than Data Lake Storage, and KQL rather than SQL alone. Most study material has not caught up
  • All three DP-700 domains carry roughly equal weight, so none can be skipped. Every weekend is built against that blueprint, and DP-900 fundamentals are covered first so beginners can genuinely start here
  • Learn Claude powered data engineering as well: generating and reviewing PySpark and T-SQL, debugging pipelines, writing tests and documentation, which is the layer no competing program teaches

Built For

Who This Data Engineer Course Is For

Fabric is the platform Microsoft has bet its entire analytics story on, and the certified talent pool is still small. Tap any card below to see why it fits you.

Aspiring data engineers starting from the beginning

Tap to learn more

Module 1 covers the DP-900 fundamentals the engineer exam assumes you already know. Basic SQL familiarity helps, but you do not need prior data engineering experience to start here.

BI, ETL and warehouse developers moving to the modern stack

Tap to learn more

Your SQL and modelling skills carry over directly. What you add is the lakehouse, PySpark, real time intelligence and the CI/CD practice that recruiters now screen for.

Anyone who was studying for DP-203

Tap to learn more

Stop. That exam no longer exists. DP-700 is built on a different platform and KQL is usually the biggest new skill for people arriving from Synapse. We give it a full weekend rather than a mention.

Analysts and Power BI developers going upstream

Tap to learn more

Power BI now lives inside Fabric, so the step from report building to owning the pipelines behind them is shorter than it has ever been, and it is where the salary difference sits.

Curriculum

Data Engineer Course Syllabus, Module by Module

Eight modules taught live across 8 weekends. The three DP-700 domains carry roughly equal weight, so the schedule gives each of them real class time instead of over investing in the comfortable material. Fundamentals come first, the exam sprint comes second last, and the final weekend adds the AI engineering layer nobody else teaches.

1Data Fundamentals and the Fabric PlatformModule 1

The engineer exam assumes the fundamentals are already in your head. Rather than assume that of you, we teach them, which is why someone new to data can start here and still finish exam ready.

  • Core data concepts: relational against non relational, structured against semi structured
  • OLTP against OLAP, batch against streaming, and when each is the right answer
  • Analytics workloads, roles and the shape of a modern data platform
  • Microsoft Fabric as one platform: workspaces, capacities and item types
  • OneLake and shortcuts: one copy of data reached from every workload
  • Hands on: set up your Fabric trial workspace and land your first data
Maps to DP-900Deliverable: Configured Fabric workspace and DP-900 study plan
2Implement and Manage an Analytics SolutionModule 2

The first DP-700 domain is about the environment around the data: who can reach what, how work is promoted, and how the platform is governed.

  • Workspace configuration, capacity settings and item lifecycle
  • Access control: workspace roles, item permissions and sharing behaviour
  • Row level, column level and object level security across Fabric items
  • Sensitivity labels, Purview integration and data governance in practice
  • Version control with Git integration and deployment pipelines across environments
  • Orchestration: scheduling, dependencies and reliable pipeline runs
  • Hands on: promote a solution from development to test to production
DP-700 domain 1, 30 to 35 percentDeliverable: Governed, source controlled workspace
3Ingest Data: Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2 and MirroringModule 3

Ingestion is where the second domain begins, and where most real projects lose time. The exam tests loading patterns rather than button clicking.

  • Data Factory pipelines: copy activities, parameters, templates and control flow
  • Dataflows Gen2 and Power Query M for low code transformation
  • Shortcuts and mirroring: reaching data without copying it
  • Full, incremental and change driven loading patterns
  • Scheduling, monitoring and rerunning failed pipeline executions
  • Hands on: a multi source ingestion into OneLake that survives a failure
DP-700 domain 2: ingestDeliverable: Production style ingestion pipeline
4Lakehouse, Delta Lake and PySparkModule 4

The heart of Fabric data engineering. PySpark is one of the three languages the exam expects you to read and write comfortably.

  • Lakehouse against warehouse, and the constraints that decide between them
  • Delta tables: creation, management and optimisation with V-Order, OPTIMIZE and VACUUM
  • Notebooks, notebookutils, environments and Spark configuration
  • PySpark DataFrames: ingest, clean, join, aggregate and window
  • Spark SQL and structured streaming basics
  • Partitioning, file sizing and the small files problem
  • Hands on: an end to end Spark transformation job on real volumes
DP-700 domain 2: transformDeliverable: Optimised Delta lakehouse
5Warehouse, T-SQL and the Medallion ArchitectureModule 5

The relational half of the platform, plus the architecture pattern every Fabric project you join will already be using.

  • Fabric warehouse: fact and dimension modelling for analytics
  • Loading with T-SQL, pipelines and Dataflows Gen2
  • Stored procedures, functions and set based thinking
  • Bronze, silver and gold layers, with the data quality rules between them
  • Deduplication, denormalisation and slowly changing dimensions
  • Serving the gold layer to Power BI with Direct Lake
  • Hands on: a full medallion build on retail data, ending in a report
DP-700 domain 2: transformDeliverable: Medallion lakehouse with Power BI report
6Real Time Intelligence: Eventstream, Eventhouse and KQLModule 6

For anyone coming from Synapse or another cloud, KQL is usually the single biggest new skill on this exam. It gets a full weekend rather than an afternoon.

  • Eventstream: ingesting live events from devices, apps and message brokers
  • Eventhouse and KQL databases for high volume time series data
  • KQL from the beginning: filtering, aggregation, time windows and joins
  • Materialised views, update policies and stored functions
  • Real time dashboards and alerting with Activator
  • When streaming genuinely beats a fast batch, and when it does not
  • Hands on: a live event stream from ingestion through to an automated alert
DP-700 domain 2: real time intelligenceDeliverable: Streaming analytics stack with alerts
Milestone 1MICROSOFT

Certification milestone: you are exam ready for DP-700 and DP-900

7Monitor, Optimise and DP-700 Exam SprintModule 7

The third domain plus a full exam rehearsal. One detail worth knowing: Microsoft Learn is available in a split screen during this exam, and knowing how to use it quickly is a skill of its own.

  • Monitoring hub, run history and diagnosing a failed pipeline properly
  • Capacity metrics, throttling and understanding what your workload actually costs
  • Query performance tuning across Spark, T-SQL and KQL
  • Table maintenance, statistics and keeping a lakehouse fast over time
  • Troubleshooting the failures that appear in exam scenarios
  • The full DP-700 outline reviewed in blueprint proportion, plus a DP-900 review
  • A full length domain scored mock, split screen Learn technique and a revision plan
DP-700 domain 3, 30 to 35 percentDeliverable: DP-700 readiness report

8Claude for Data Engineering and CapstoneModule 8

The weekend no competitor includes. Pipeline code, tests and documentation are already being written with AI assistance on the teams that are hiring, and doing it well is now a differentiator in interviews.

  • Claude as a pipeline copilot: generating, reviewing and refactoring PySpark and T-SQL
  • AI assisted debugging when a job fails at three in the morning
  • Generating data quality tests and expectation suites from a schema
  • Documenting pipelines and lineage so the next engineer is not stuck
  • Verification discipline: catching what an assistant gets confidently wrong
  • Capstone: an end to end Fabric solution, ingestion through to a governed report
  • Portfolio write up and a mock interview defending your architecture
360DT ExclusiveDeliverable: AI augmented workflow and end to end capstone

FAQ

Data Engineer Course FAQs

I was studying for DP-203. What should I do?

Stop and switch. Microsoft retired DP-203 in March 2025 and DP-700 is the current data engineering credential. It is built on a different platform: Fabric rather than Synapse, OneLake rather than Data Lake Storage, and KQL alongside SQL. Most of your data thinking transfers, but the tooling does not, and KQL is usually the biggest gap.

Do I need prior data engineering experience?

No. Module 1 covers the DP-900 fundamentals that the engineer exam assumes you already hold. Basic SQL familiarity helps you move faster, but the program is designed as a genuine path in from the beginning.

How is the DP-700 exam structured?

Three domains carrying roughly equal weight at 30 to 35 percent each, so none can be skipped. Expect around 40 to 60 questions in 100 minutes with a 700 pass mark, including case studies and interactive components. Microsoft Learn is available in a split screen during the exam, and Module 7 teaches you how to use that quickly rather than losing time in it.

Which certifications does this prepare me for?

DP-700, Fabric Data Engineer Associate, and DP-900, Azure Data Fundamentals, with a domain scored mock for DP-700. Exam vouchers are purchased separately from Microsoft. DP-700 carries a free annual renewal assessment once earned.

Will Fabric capacity cost me money during the program?

No. The projects are built on the Fabric trial capacity and free tier services, and we cover capacity and cost awareness as part of Module 7 so you understand what workloads cost before you run them at work.

What if I miss a class?

Every session is recorded and you keep lifetime access, plus the option to re attend any future batch at no extra cost.
