Comparison · 2026AZ-305 vs SAA-C03 in 2026: Which Cloud Architect Certification Is Better for Indian Careers?
Both badges say "solutions architect", but they sit on different rungs of the ladder. SAA-C03 has no prerequisite and costs USD 150. AZ-305 requires AZ-104 first, making it a two-exam commitment of roughly USD 330. That structural difference decides the answer for most readers.
- They are not peers. SAA-C03 is associate level with no prerequisite. AZ-305 is expert level and Microsoft gates the certification behind AZ-104.
- The cost gap is real. AWS lists SAA-C03 at USD 150. Microsoft lists AZ-305 at USD 165 or INR 4,800 plus tax, but you must add an AZ-104 attempt to reach the badge.
- Renewal favours Microsoft. Microsoft Learn renewals are free, annual, unproctored and open book. AWS credentials run three years, with a free unsupervised recertification assessment of roughly 40 minutes near expiry.
- Employer type beats market share. Indian IT services and BFSI captives skew Microsoft. Product companies, startups and many capability centres skew AWS.
- Verdict for most readers: start with SAA-C03. One exam, portable, interview-eligible fastest.
- Verdict for a specific reader: if you already hold AZ-104 or administer Azure at work, go straight to AZ-305. The prerequisite that blocks everyone else is already behind you.
The AZ-305 vs SAA-C03 question is usually asked the wrong way. People ask which certification is harder, or which pays more. The better question is which one you can actually finish this quarter, because an unfinished expert track is worth nothing on a resume while a completed associate one gets you shortlisted. Here is the honest comparison, including the parts that make one option clearly worse for some readers.
AZ-305 vs SAA-C03: The Short Answer
If you are a career switcher, a fresher, or an engineer not already inside a Microsoft shop, take SAA-C03 first. One exam, no prerequisite, USD 150, and a syllabus that maps to how most Indian product companies build. Eight to twelve weeks of serious preparation puts a real credential on your profile before the next hiring cycle.
If you already hold AZ-104, or you administer Azure daily at a services firm or bank captive, go straight to AZ-305. The prerequisite that makes AZ-305 expensive for everyone else is already paid for, and an expert badge in the stack your employer runs is worth more internally than an associate badge in one they do not.
We teach both paths, so let us be blunt rather than steer you to the pricier option. There is no honest reading in which AZ-305 is the better first cloud certification for someone starting cold. It is a better second one for someone already in the Microsoft ecosystem. Both sit in our full certifications overview.
What Each Exam Actually Tests
AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03)
The AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam is a design exam in associate-level clothing. Per the AWS exam guide as of September 2026, it runs 65 questions in 130 minutes, of which 50 are scored and 15 are unscored trial items you cannot identify, with a scaled passing score of 720 out of 1,000. No formal prerequisites, though AWS recommends around a year of hands-on experience.
Four domains: secure, resilient, high-performing and cost-optimised architectures. In practice you are asked, repeatedly, to pick between two technically correct answers where one is cheaper or one survives an availability zone failure. You must be fluent in decisions like when S3 Intelligent-Tiering beats a lifecycle policy, when an Application Load Balancer beats a Network Load Balancer, why an Aurora read replica solves a different problem than an ElastiCache layer, and how a VPC endpoint changes both your security posture and your NAT gateway bill. Our live AWS Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer course drills those trade-off calls in the console, because the exam punishes people who memorised service names without ever paying for a NAT gateway.
Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)
AZ-305 is the design half of the Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential. Public exam listings as of September 2026 describe roughly 60 questions in 120 minutes with a passing score of 700 out of 1,000, and Microsoft gates the certification behind AZ-104. You can sit AZ-305 first, but the badge does not issue until AZ-104 is also in hand.
Its four areas cover identity and governance, data storage, business continuity, and infrastructure design, and it leans harder on governance than AWS does. Expect to reason about management group hierarchies, Azure Policy versus RBAC as an enforcement mechanism, Entra ID conditional access, and how a landing zone is laid out before a single workload lands in it. That emphasis is not academic in India: it is what a services firm staffing an enterprise migration needs. The same design thinking fills the middle weeks of our Azure Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer course, alongside AZ-400.

| Best first cloud certification? | Yes for most readers | Only if AZ-104 is already done |
Cost and Time: What You Actually Spend
Exam fees are the smallest line item, and comparing them alone is how people talk themselves into the wrong path. What matters is total rupees and total weeks to a badge you can put on a profile.
| Line item | SAA-C03 route | AZ-305 route (from zero) |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fees | USD 150 for one attempt | Roughly USD 330 across AZ-104 and AZ-305 |
| Cloud lab spend | Free tier plus roughly INR 1,500 to 3,000 if a NAT gateway or RDS instance is left running | Free credits plus similar spillover if a VM or Application Gateway stays up |
| Weeks to badge, part time | 8 to 12 | 16 to 22 |
| Weekly study hours | 8 to 10 | 8 to 10, sustained twice as long |
| Retake exposure | Full fee per attempt, no free retake | Full fee per attempt, per exam |
| Ongoing upkeep | One recertification action every three years | One renewal assessment every year |
The lab spend row is the one people underestimate. The most common surprise bill in Indian study groups is a NAT gateway left running for three weeks, billing per hour plus per gigabyte processed. Set a billing alert on day one of either path.
AWS vs Azure Certification: What the Indian Job Market Rewards
Global market share is the wrong lens for a career decision, but worth knowing. Synergy Research Group figures reported in 2026 put AWS at roughly 28 to 31 percent of global cloud infrastructure and Microsoft Azure at roughly 21 to 25 percent, with Q1 2026 cloud spending around USD 129 billion and growing about 35 percent year on year. Analyst estimates differ by a few points depending on methodology, so treat these as ranges.
Employer composition matters more. Large Indian IT services firms and BFSI captives run enormous Microsoft estates, because the enterprise is already on Microsoft 365 and Entra ID and Azure is the path of least resistance. Product companies, funded startups and a large share of capability centres in Bengaluru and Hyderabad default to AWS. Before you pick, open Naukri or LinkedIn, filter to your city and target companies, and count postings saying "AWS" against ones saying "Azure". That five-minute count beats any blog's opinion, including this one.
Cloud certification salary in India: how to read the numbers honestly
Be sceptical of any article giving a precise salary figure for a certification. A credential does not set your pay; experience, employer tier and interview performance do. Industry reports and job listings suggest cloud architect roles in Indian metros are typically advertised across a wide band, with the meaningful step up arriving after three to five years of hands-on cloud work rather than at the moment the badge issues. Treat it as a door opener, not a raise.
One pattern does hold: pay concentrates where cloud meets data and AI, because architects who can also stand up a data platform or ship an AI workload are scarcer than those who only do infrastructure. Hence the common pairings with a live Microsoft Fabric data engineering program, with agentic AI and RAG engineering, or with MLOps skills built around AI-300.
Three Readers, Three Different Answers
These are illustrative composite scenarios built from the questions we are asked most often. They are not the results of named individuals or companies.
Priya, support engineer at a Pune services company, 3 years experience
Her employer runs client workloads on Azure and she touches the portal weekly for ticket work. No certifications yet. The instinct is to chase AZ-305 because "expert" sounds better. The right move is AZ-104 first, then AZ-305, over roughly five months. She pays no detour cost: AZ-104 maps directly to what she already does and makes her internally promotable months before AZ-305 lands. The prerequisite is not a tax for her, it is a step she needed anyway.
Rahul, Java developer at a Bengaluru product startup, 4 years experience
His company deploys on AWS and he has never certified anything. SAA-C03 is the only defensible answer: one exam, USD 150, ten weeks, mapped to the console he already opens. AZ-305 would cost more money, twice the time, and produce a badge for a platform his employer does not run. Later, DOP-C02 compounds on the same stack.
A five-person platform team choosing a shared training budget
A team of five has INR 1.5 lakh for certifications this year, running production on AWS with Microsoft 365 as the corporate estate. Splitting evenly across two ecosystems produces five half-certified engineers. Better: certify three engineers deep on the platform that runs production, and put the remainder into one person covering the Microsoft side, starting with Copilot and agent administration via AB-900 rather than a full architect track, since a corporate estate needs administration, not architecture.
- Booking AZ-305 without AZ-104. You can pass the exam and still not hold the certification.
- Studying two clouds at once. The services rhyme but the defaults differ, and the confusion surfaces in exactly the scenario questions both exams are built from.
- Practice-test farming. Both exams test judgement between two workable answers. Memorised question banks do not transfer, and they are the biggest cause of a confident failure.
- Ignoring the bill. Cost optimisation is a scored SAA-C03 domain; you cannot fake having felt a surprise invoice.
- Letting a credential lapse. Microsoft renewals are annual, free and open book, but not automatic, and the eligibility window closes.
How to Prepare for Either Path in 2026
The structure is nearly identical either way, so the method transfers.
- Weeks 1 to 2, build the mental map. Compute, storage, networking, identity, managed databases. Do not memorise; learn what each service exists to avoid.
- Weeks 3 to 6, build three architectures by hand. A public web tier behind a load balancer, a private data tier, and a serverless event pipeline. Deploy them, break them, read the bill.
- Weeks 7 to 9, drill trade-offs. For every design, write down the cheaper alternative and the more resilient one, then say in a sentence why you chose the middle. That is literally the exam.
- Week 10 onward, timed practice. Full length and timed, only after the hands-on work. Use practice tests to find gaps, not to learn content.
If you would rather do that with a cohort and a deadline than alone at midnight, both tracks run as live weekend programmes, and there are free webinars to sample the teaching first. If your ambition points at AI architecture rather than infrastructure, the CCAR-F architect foundations prep course is the parallel track.

Choose SAA-C03 If, Choose AZ-305 If
Choose SAA-C03 if
- This is your first cloud certification and you are starting from zero.
- You want a credential finished inside one quarter rather than two.
- Your target employers are product companies, startups or AWS-heavy capability centres.
- Budget is tight and one exam fee is the difference between starting and stalling.
Choose AZ-305 if
- You already hold AZ-104, or you administer Azure as part of your current job.
- Your employer runs Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Azure as the corporate standard.
- You are aiming at enterprise governance and landing zone work rather than startup infrastructure.
- You want an expert-level badge and have four to five months to give it.
The verdict, stated plainly: for most readers of this guide, SAA-C03 is the better decision in 2026, and it is not close. One exam instead of two, less than half the cost to a badge, roughly half the calendar time, and no prerequisite that can strand you mid-path. AZ-305 is the better certification for a narrower and very real group: people already inside the Microsoft ecosystem, for whom the prerequisite is a step they needed regardless. Pick by which description is yours, not by which platform has the larger market share.
Start with SAA-C03, then compound it with DOP-C02
A 12-week live weekend programme preparing you for both AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) and AWS DevOps Engineer Professional (DOP-C02), with hands-on projects, mentor support and placement guidance. The next batch starts 27 Sept 2026.

Frequently asked questions
AZ-305 vs SAA-C03: which one is harder?
AZ-305 is the harder credential to earn, mainly for structural reasons. It sits at expert level and requires AZ-104 first, so the realistic path is two exams over four to five months. SAA-C03 is a single associate exam with no prerequisite, typically eight to twelve weeks part time. Question for question both are scenario-based and both punish memorisation, but AZ-305 assumes more prior Azure administration knowledge.
Can I take AZ-305 without AZ-104?
You can sit and pass the AZ-305 exam, but the Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification does not issue until you also hold AZ-104. Plan for both. Booking AZ-305 alone and expecting a badge is one of the most expensive mistakes on this path.
Which cloud certification pays more in India in 2026?
Neither certification sets a salary on its own. Industry reports and job listings suggest cloud architect compensation in Indian metros is advertised across a wide band and moves mainly with hands-on experience and employer tier rather than with the badge. The bigger pay lever is combining cloud architecture with data or AI skills. Use the certification to clear resume filters and to be fluent in interviews.
Is SAA-C03 enough to get a cloud job as a fresher in India?
Enough to get shortlisted, not enough to get hired on its own. Pair it with two or three deployed projects you can talk through in detail, including what they cost to run and what you would change to halve that bill. Interviewers for junior cloud roles almost always probe cost and failure handling, and that is where certified candidates without hands-on work fall down.
How long does it take to prepare for AZ-305 or SAA-C03?
For SAA-C03 from a standing start, budget eight to twelve weeks at eight to ten hours a week. For AZ-305 including AZ-104, budget sixteen to twenty-two weeks at the same weekly load. If you already administer Azure daily, AZ-305 alone can be done in ten to fourteen weeks.
Do AWS and Azure certifications expire?
Yes, on different cycles. AWS certifications are valid for three years, with a free unsupervised recertification assessment of roughly 40 minutes available in the months before expiry, plus other renewal routes. Microsoft role-based certifications renew annually through a free, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six-month eligibility window. Microsoft's renewal is easier but comes around four times as often.
Is AWS or Azure better for moving into AI and data engineering roles?
Both support the transition well, and your employer's stack decides it. Azure has a tighter story if your organisation already runs Microsoft 365 and is standardising on Microsoft Fabric for analytics, which is why DP-700 is a common follow-on, and Power BI work through PL-300 is a frequent entry point. AWS is the more common starting point in product companies building AI services from scratch. Either way, the differentiator is shipping a real workload, not adding a second infrastructure badge.
Your next step
If you recognised yourself in Rahul's scenario more than Priya's, which most readers will, the decision is made: SAA-C03 first, DOP-C02 next, Azure later if a role demands it. The AWS Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer course covers both exams across 80+ hours of live weekend classes over 12 weeks at Rs 29,999. If your situation is genuinely the Azure one, take the AZ-305 and AZ-400 track instead. We would rather you took the right one. Still unsure?
