Comparison · 2026Solutions Architect vs DevOps Engineer in 2026: Salary, Skills and Which Cloud Role to Pick in India
Solutions architect vs DevOps engineer is rarely a real fork: DevOps is an entry door, architecture is a destination. Indian job boards listed roughly 37,600 DevOps openings against 10,300 architect roles in late 2026, and most architect adverts ask for five years or more. Start in DevOps, architect later.
- The two roles are not peers. Indian architect adverts routinely open at five to ten years; DevOps has genuine fresher tracks.
- Volume favours DevOps heavily. One large Indian job board listed about 37,600 DevOps vacancies in August 2026 against about 10,300 solution architect vacancies.
- Exam costs differ sharply. SAA-C03 is 150 USD and DOP-C02 is 300 USD; Microsoft has standardised AZ-305 and AZ-400 near 165 USD each.
- AZ-305 has a hard prerequisite. You can sit it alone, but the Expert badge only lands when an active AZ-104 sits behind it.
- Architecture work moved into platforms. Gartner forecast 80% of large software engineering organisations would run platform teams by 2026, up from 45% in 2022.
- The verdict: take the DevOps seat first, earn the architect title on the way through, and treat SAA-C03 as a reading credential rather than a job ticket.
You are three years into an L2 support seat at a Pune GCC with about 30 spare hours a month, and two titles keep showing up in your feed at very different salaries. One says solutions architect and lists 12 to 30 LPA. The other says DevOps engineer and lists 9 to 18 LPA. The architect route looks like the obvious move. It is usually the wrong first move, and the reason sits in the job descriptions rather than the salary slabs.
Solutions Architect vs DevOps Engineer: What Each Role Actually Owns
Strip both titles back to the artefact each person produces in week one and the difference stops being fuzzy.
The architect produces decisions
A solutions architect's output is a document that closes an argument: a landing zone design that survives security review, a migration plan sorting 40 applications into lift-and-shift, re-platform and switch-off, a cost model that tells a CIO what the Azure bill looks like in month 18. The tools are unglamorous. The Well-Architected Tool, a pricing calculator, draw.io, and a lot of time with procurement.
The cloud architecture credentials reflect that. SAA-C03 and AZ-305 test whether you can choose between two defensible designs under a cost or compliance constraint, not whether you can make something run.
The DevOps engineer produces working systems
A DevOps engineer's first-week artefact is a merged pull request. Usually Terraform, sometimes a Helm chart, occasionally a Python script that stops a nightly job failing silently. You own the pipeline, the cluster, the alerting and, in most Indian product teams, roughly one week in four on call.
Those skills are testable in an interview in a way architecture skills are not, and that is the whole argument for starting here. A hiring manager can hand you a broken pipeline and watch you fix it. Nobody hands a 24-year-old a 40-application migration and watches them architect it.
Difference Between Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer: The Full Criteria Table
| Criterion | Solutions Architect | DevOps Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Typical entry experience in India | 5 to 10 years, per most 2026 adverts | 0 to 2 years, genuine fresher tracks exist |
| What you own | Landing zone design, migration plan, cost model | Pipelines, clusters, alerting, release health |
| Day-one artefact | An architecture decision record | A merged Terraform pull request |
| Primary tools | Well-Architected Tool, pricing calculators, draw.io | Terraform, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Prometheus |
| Core AWS certification | SAA-C03, 150 USD, passing score 720 | DOP-C02, 300 USD, passing score 750 |
| Core Azure certification | AZ-305, about 165 USD, AZ-104 required for the badge | AZ-400, about 165 USD |
| On-call | Rare, usually escalation only | Normal, commonly one week in four |
| Openings on one Indian board, late 2026 | About 10,300 | About 37,600 |
| What failure looks like | A design nobody can build inside the budget | A failed deploy at 2am and a silent alert |
| Where pay accelerates | After year 7, through scope and account size | After year 4, through reliability ownership |
| Biggest career risk | Drifting into slideware with no build authority | Drifting into ticket ops with no design authority |

Which Cloud Role Hires More in India in 2026?
Openings and platform adoption, checked today
Demand is not evenly split, and the gap is structural rather than seasonal.
Vacancy totals shown on public listing pages, checked 23 September 2026; they include duplicates, so read them as relative scale rather than a census. The Gartner figure is a published forecast.
Roughly three and a half DevOps openings per architect opening is not a hiring fashion. It follows from where the work sits: a 400-person engineering organisation needs one or two architects and fifteen people keeping delivery running.
Platform engineering is absorbing the design work
The Gartner forecast matters more than the raw counts. When 80% of large organisations run a platform team, a real share of design decisions stops being an architect's slide and becomes a paved path inside an internal developer platform: the approved Terraform module, the pre-wired CI template, the policy gate. That work is done by senior engineers who were hired as DevOps engineers. If you want to design systems in 2026, the platform team is often the shorter road than the architect title.
Solutions Architect vs DevOps Engineer Pay: Where the Lines Cross
Advertised pay bands by stage, India
The architect premium is real, but it arrives late and it is a seniority premium, not a title premium.
Compiled from Indian job-board adverts and salary aggregator pages reviewed 23 September 2026. These are advertised ranges, not offers; industry reports suggest wide variance by employer tier, with GCC and product-company bands above service-company bands at every stage.
The naive reading of that chart is wrong. The architect band does not win because architecture is better paid work; it wins because it starts at six years while the DevOps band starts at zero. Compare like for like and a platform engineer with seven years and production ownership is typically advertised inside the same range as an architect with seven years.
A realistic eight-year track from a support seat
Illustrative progression for the Pune GCC scenario, not a guarantee.
Yr 0 to 1
Yr 2 to 3
Yr 4 to 6
Yr 7+
An illustrative scenario built from the advertised bands above, checked 23 September 2026. Job changes at years 3 and 6 do most of the work; internal increments rarely produce jumps this size.
Every large step there is a job change, not a promotion cycle. That is the uncomfortable part of Indian cloud pay, and it applies equally to both titles.

Certification Cost and Time: SAA-C03, DOP-C02, AZ-305 and AZ-400
This is where the two paths diverge on money and calendar, and where a lot of people spend badly.
| Exam | Track | Fee | Format | Realistic prep from a support background |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAA-C03 | Architect | 150 USD, roughly Rs 12,500 to 15,100 with 18% GST from India | Passing score 720 of 1000 | 8 to 10 weeks at 8 hrs a week |
| DOP-C02 | DevOps | 300 USD | 75 questions, 180 minutes, passing score 750 | 12 to 16 weeks, and only after real pipeline work |
| AZ-305 | Architect | About 165 USD, roughly Rs 4,800 in India | 120 minutes, passing score 700; active AZ-104 needed for the Expert badge | 10 to 14 weeks after AZ-104 |
| AZ-400 | DevOps | About 165 USD | Expert level, CI/CD, IaC and release strategy | 10 to 12 weeks with hands-on Azure DevOps |
Two details are worth acting on. The India price gap is large: SAA-C03 landed near Rs 15,100 including GST when paid from India in 2026, while Microsoft's associate and expert exams were listed near Rs 4,800. If cash is the constraint and your employer is Microsoft-heavy, the Azure ladder costs roughly a third as much.
The AZ-104 prerequisite also catches people every year. You can book and sit AZ-305 with no prior exam, and the Azure Solutions Architect Expert title will not issue until an active AZ-104 sits behind it. An expired one does not count. 360DT's live Azure Solutions Architect and DevOps program sequences the two exams in that order for this reason, and the AWS SAA-C03 and DOP-C02 track runs the equivalent ladder.
What the AWS DevOps certification actually tests
DOP-C02 scored domain weights
Two thirds of the exam is automation, IaC and security, which is also two thirds of the job.
Weights from the published AWS DOP-C02 exam guide, checked 23 September 2026.
Note what is missing: no domain is called design. DOP-C02 assumes you can already build and asks whether you can keep it alive, which makes it far harder to pass on reading alone. Clear SAA-C03 first, spend a year shipping infrastructure, then book it.
Where the adjacent tracks sit
Three neighbouring roles pull from the same skill base. Model deployment and monitoring has split off into its own title, covered by a dedicated MLOps engineering program built around AI-300; the data platform side runs through Microsoft Fabric and DP-700; and serving agents and retrieval systems in production is increasingly a platform-team job, which is what RAG and agent engineering training covers. All three reward the Terraform and pipeline instincts a DevOps seat gives you.
Case Study: What Spotify's Backstage Says About Where Architecture Work Went
Spotify built an internal developer portal called Backstage and open-sourced it in March 2020. By then, per Spotify's own engineering write-ups, it catalogued about 14,000 software components and 5,000 documentation sites, with internal adoption around 96% of R&D staff. CNCF material published in 2026 puts adopters past 3,400 companies including Toyota, Philips and LEGO, and credits Toyota's implementation with about 10 million dollars in cost reductions over two years.
Here is why that bears on your title choice. The things Backstage enforces, the service catalogue, the golden-path templates, the ownership metadata, are architecture decisions. They were made once, encoded in software, then applied thousands of times with no architect in the room. Design authority is moving to the people who build the platform, and away from a separate person who writes a design document and hands it over.
Choose the title that puts you near the platform.
What Usually Goes Wrong Here
- Collecting the architect certification with no build history. SAA-C03 on a CV with no infrastructure in it reads as ambition, not capability. Interviewers ask what you built, then the conversation ends.
- Taking a DevOps title that is really a ticket queue. Ask in the interview whether you get merge rights on the infrastructure repo. If not, you are joining operations under a nicer name and your pay plateaus around year four.
- Booking DOP-C02 too early. At 300 USD it is the priciest single exam on either path and it punishes anyone who has never debugged a real deployment. Two failed attempts cost more than most live training.
- Letting AZ-104 expire before AZ-305. People clear AZ-104, drift for two years, pass AZ-305, then find the Expert badge will not issue.
The second one costs the most. It is invisible on the offer letter and very visible three years later, when your CV says DevOps engineer and every line under it describes raising and closing tickets.
The honest caveat
DevOps is not right for everyone, and the marketing undersells one thing badly. On-call is real. In a product company or a GCC running production for a global business, one week in four means the phone can go off at 3am and you are expected to be useful within ten minutes. Some people find that energising; some find it corrosive. If you already know unpredictable hours will wreck you, the presales and solution-design route through a service company is slower and less lucrative, and it is a legitimate choice rather than a consolation prize.

Choose Solutions Architect If, Choose DevOps Engineer If
Choose the solutions architect path if
- You already have five or more years of infrastructure, network or application delivery experience. The adverts are not bluffing about that.
- You enjoy the commercial half: cost models, vendor negotiation, sitting with a security lead who wants to say no.
- Your employer is a service company where architect is a defined billing grade with a promotion ladder attached.
- You want predictable hours and accept that the pay jump arrives near year seven rather than year four.
Choose the DevOps engineer path if
- You have fewer than five years of experience, whatever your title. This is the only one of the two doors actually open to you.
- You want demonstrable skills. A public repo with working Terraform beats any certification in a 2026 interview loop.
- You can live with on-call, or you are targeting a platform team, where the rota is usually lighter than an SRE rota.
- You want the architecture work eventually. A growing share of it now lives on the platform team.
The Verdict: Solutions Architect vs DevOps Engineer for an Indian Career in 2026
Take the DevOps engineer role. Not because it is the better job, but because it is the reachable one, and because it teaches the thing architecture actually needs: what breaks in production.
See the trade-off clearly. For four years you will earn less than a peer who lucked into an architect-adjacent presales seat at a service company, and you will carry a pager they will not. What those four years buy is optionality. A senior DevOps or platform engineer can move into an architect title, SRE, MLOps or a product infrastructure team. An architect with no build history has one door, and it is the one they are already standing in.
The popular advice that certifications are the lever is where I would push back hardest. They are a filter-passer. SAA-C03 gets your CV past a keyword screen; it will not survive fifteen minutes with a manager asking how you handled a failed deploy. Build first, certify to prove it.
From a support seat with 30 spare hours a month, the practical plan is one structured 12-week block on AWS fundamentals and pipelines, then SAA-C03, then a year of real infrastructure work, then DOP-C02. That is the sequence 360DT's live AWS Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer course is built around. If you would rather test the teaching first, sit in on a free webinar or a demo class.

Frequently asked questions
Is solutions architect vs DevOps engineer really a choice, or a sequence?
Under five years of experience it is a sequence, not a choice. Indian solutions architect adverts commonly open at five to ten years, so the role is not available to you yet whichever you prefer. Take the DevOps seat, build production history, revisit the architect title around year six.
Can a fresher become a cloud solutions architect in India?
Effectively no, not with that title. You can pass SAA-C03 or AZ-305 as a fresher and it is worth doing, but the job descriptions gate on years of delivery experience. The realistic entry points are DevOps engineer, cloud support associate and junior platform engineer, all of which feed the architect track later.
Which pays more in India, a DevOps engineer or a solutions architect?
Architect bands are advertised higher, but that reflects seniority rather than the title. Industry reports suggest architect roles are typically advertised from about 24 LPA at six to nine years, while DevOps runs from roughly 4.5 LPA at entry to 22 LPA at three to five years. At equal experience the two converge, and staff platform engineers frequently out-earn mid-level architects.
Do I need AZ-104 before AZ-305?
You can register for and sit AZ-305 without it. The Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification is not awarded until an active AZ-104 is on your transcript, and an expired one does not satisfy the requirement. Plan both exams inside the same certification cycle.
Is DOP-C02 worth 300 USD if I already hold SAA-C03?
Only after real pipeline and incident work. The exam is 75 questions in 180 minutes with a 750 passing score, and its largest domains are SDLC automation at 22%, then configuration management and IaC and security at 17% each. Candidates who treat it as a reading exercise fail it expensively.
What is the difference between a DevOps engineer and a platform engineer?
A DevOps engineer supports delivery teams directly. A platform engineer builds the self-service product those teams use: golden-path templates, a service catalogue, policy gates. That is where a growing share of design authority now sits, which is why Gartner expected 80% of large engineering organisations to run such teams by 2026.
Should I learn AWS or Azure for a DevOps career in India?
Follow your target employers. On cost alone the Microsoft ladder is cheaper from India, with AZ-305 and AZ-400 near Rs 4,800 each against roughly Rs 15,100 for SAA-C03 including GST. On breadth of openings the two are close in most Indian metros, so pick one, go deep, learn the second later.
