Career & Salary · 2026Data Engineer Salary in India 2026: What 24,000+ Listings Pay by Experience and Company Type
Data engineer salary in India in 2026 is typically advertised between 4.5 and 8 LPA at entry level, 15 to 28 LPA at three to five years in product firms, and 40 to 60 LPA for platform leads. Glassdoor listed 24,308 open data engineer roles in India in September 2026.
- Employer type beats experience. 2026 India compilations put product firms and GCCs 50 to 100 percent above IT services for the same years served.
- Streaming pays most. 2026 salary guides report Kafka, Flink and Spark Streaming profiles advertised 20 to 35 percent above generalist ETL.
- Staying put costs you. Deloitte India Talent Outlook 2026 projects a 9.1 percent average increment, against 20 to 35 percent on a lateral move.
- Certification is a filter, not a multiplier. DP-700 costs about USD 165 and gets your profile read. The pipelines you can describe set the offer.
- The 60 LPA screenshots are real and rare. Past eight years, in GCCs, with much of the number in equity rather than base.
You get pinged at 2am because the nightly load failed, you fix it with a rerun, and nobody upstream hears about it. Then a recruiter says a lakehouse role pays "up to 30 LPA" and you cannot tell whether that applies to someone with your three years of Informatica and SQL. Below are advertised ranges collected today, split by years served and by who writes the cheque, because the second variable is the bigger one.
Data Engineer Salary in India by Experience: 2026 Advertised Bands
There is no national band. There are two markets sharing a job title: the services market, which pays for headcount on a client project, and the product and GCC market, which pays for whoever decides how data gets modelled. Both advertise as "Data Engineer".
| Experience | IT services and consulting (advertised) | Product, GCC and unicorn (advertised) | What the role usually covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 years | 4.5 to 8 LPA | 8 to 15 LPA | SQL, one orchestrator, fixes to pipelines someone else built |
| 2 to 5 years | 8 to 15 LPA | 15 to 28 LPA | Owns a pipeline end to end, carries the pager for it |
| 5 to 8 years | 15 to 25 LPA | 26 to 42 LPA | Schema contracts, cost, partitioning, code review |
| 8 to 12 years | 22 to 34 LPA | 40 to 60 LPA | Platform choices across several teams, vendor calls |
| 12+ years | 30 to 45 LPA | 55 to 80 LPA | Staff or principal scope. Few openings |
Advertised ranges, not guarantees. Compiled 23 September 2026 from public job listings and 2026 India salary compilations, including Glassdoor India. The product and GCC column includes variable pay and equity, which 2026 benchmarks put near half of senior total compensation at large GCCs.
Data engineer salary for freshers in India (0 to 2 years)
Advertised fresher bands sit at 4.5 to 6.5 LPA for a standard services intake, 7 to 9 LPA where the candidate arrives with a portfolio rather than a syllabus. A manager reading 200 profiles wants one line proving you have handled data you did not create. Copy this shape: "Built a daily ingestion pipeline from a public API into a Delta table (Python, Airflow, 2.1M rows/day), added schema drift checks and a dead letter path; cut manual reruns from 4 per week to 0." A volume, a failure mode, an outcome.
Data Engineer Salary in India by Company Type: Services, GCC, Product and Startup
This is where people lose money without noticing. Two engineers with identical Spark skill and four years can sit 12 LPA apart on the letterhead alone.
| Employer type | Typical advertised band, 3 to 6 years | Rough pay shape | What you trade away |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian IT services and consulting | 8 to 16 LPA | Around 90% base, small variable | Tool choice. You inherit the client's 2016 decisions |
| Global capability centre (GCC) | 18 to 32 LPA | Base plus meaningful variable and equity | Scope. One slice of a platform designed elsewhere |
| Product company or unicorn | 20 to 38 LPA | Base plus equity, highest ceiling | Interview bar. System design plus live SQL |
| Funded startup (Series A to C) | 14 to 26 LPA plus ESOP | Cash below market, ESOP notional | Stability, and weekends when the pager goes |
| Data consulting boutique | 10 to 20 LPA | Mostly base, some billing bonus | Depth. Projects change before anything matures |
Advertised ranges collected 23 September 2026 from public listings and 2026 India salary compilations. Bands overlap deliberately: a strong services candidate beats a weak GCC offer. ESOP is not cash, and should be discounted heavily.
2026 India salary compilations report product companies and GCCs advertising 50 to 100 percent above IT services for equivalent experience. The employer you target moves pay more than the year you are in.
If you are three years into a services firm and reading that with mild annoyance, the move is not an internal correction. Those are capped by a band your HR system wrote down before you applied. The move is becoming interviewable for the second column. Also read: Data Analyst to Data Engineer in 2026 if you are coming from the reporting side instead.
What Actually Drives the Top of the Band
Four things move an offer, unequally: the stack you can defend under questioning, your domain, the employer tier, and the last five minutes where the number gets said out loud.
Advertised premium by specialism
Streaming carries the biggest reported uplift. The last row is what standing still is worth.
Premiums from 2026 India salary compilations. The up to 30 percent AI and ML figure was reported by Business Today on 23 September 2026, citing the Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026, which puts 2026 hikes at 8 to 12 percent.
Where the openings sit
Bengaluru alone accounts for around two fifths of the country's listed data engineer roles.
Glassdoor India listing counts for "data engineer", read 23 September 2026. City counts are subsets of the national figure and include duplicates.
Azure data engineer salary in India versus the open source stack
Azure data engineer salary in India tracks slightly below Databricks-heavy roles at the same experience, because the Fabric pool is larger and easier to hire from. For a switcher that is good news: more openings you actually qualify for. Fabric shops skew to mid-size Indian enterprises, the two-person data team at an insurer in Pune running Fabric because the company already pays for Microsoft 365. Those teams read a services background generously.
My call: if your employer runs Microsoft, learn Fabric and take DP-700 first, because you can practise on systems you already have. If you are free to choose, Spark plus one streaming tool has the higher ceiling. One stack you have broken and repaired beats seven you touched for a weekend. 360DT's live Microsoft Fabric data engineering program runs the DP-700 objectives as labs rather than slide reviews, on weekend evenings, so nobody has to resign to attend.
The negotiation minute most engineers give away
Asked your expectation, the reflex answer is current CTC plus a percentage, which anchors you to the band you are leaving. Say this instead: "Based on listings I have seen for this scope in Bengaluru, I am looking at 24 to 28 LPA fixed. I am flexible on the fixed-to-variable split if the fixed lands in that range." A range, a basis, one concession. If they insist on current CTC, give it and repeat the target in the same breath.
How Data Engineer Pay Scales From Year 1 to Year 10
Pay steps rather than climbs, and the steps track changes in what you are trusted to decide, not anniversaries.
The five steps of a data engineering career in India
Each jump is tied to a widening of what you decide, not to time served.
You run what exists
SQL, one orchestrator, a runbook someone else wrote. Ends when you have built a pipeline you can debug alone.
You own a pipeline
Ingestion, transformation, tests, and the pager for all three. Moving to the product or GCC market here is the largest single jump most engineers ever see.
You own the cost
Partitioning, file sizes, cluster sizing, the awkward meeting about the warehouse bill. "I cut Spark spend 38 percent by fixing small files" outperforms any certificate.
You own the contract
Schemas, SLAs, what downstream teams may assume. Product and GCC bands open sharply here, as does interview difficulty.
You own the platform
Build versus buy, vendor negotiation, the migration nobody wants to sign. Few openings, and the 40 to 60 LPA range that gets screenshotted.

A Realistic Before and After: Services ETL Developer to Lakehouse Engineer
An illustrative composite built from typical 2026 market paths, not a real person and not an outcome anyone should expect to repeat.
A 2021-batch ETL developer in Pune: four years at a services firm, 9.2 LPA fixed, Informatica and Oracle, a 9 percent appraisal in March. Watch what happens to that experience on paper. Managers discount work that did not involve the decisions the new role needs, so four services years convert to about two years of credit. That is how a 26 LPA posting becomes an 18 to 22 LPA conversation.
Months 1 to 3 went on SQL that survives an interview: window functions, query plans, why a join spilled to disk. Months 4 to 6 were Fabric and Spark plus the project that carried the interviews, a medallion pipeline over a public transport dataset with quality tests and a documented backfill. DP-700 landed in month 7, as a keyword gate. Then the part nobody posts about. Months 8 and 9 produced 31 applications and two interviews, both lost at system design on idempotency and late-arriving data. The repair was rebuilding the project to survive a replayed batch, then explaining it in four minutes. Month 11 produced a GCC offer at 19.5 LPA fixed plus variable, against 9.2 before, on 12 to 15 hours a week throughout.
The number that matters is not 19.5. It is 31 applications for two interviews, a normal switcher conversion rate and the reason most timelines slip.
Does DP-700 or Any Certification Move Your Advertised Band?
Directly, no. No listing prices a certificate. What one changes is the odds a human opens your profile, and for a switcher that gate is the expensive one.
The numbers: DP-700, the Fabric Data Engineer Associate exam, costs about USD 165, roughly 4,800 rupees plus taxes, and runs 100 minutes with a 700 of 1000 pass mark. Microsoft's Fabric Data Days programme in 2026 has issued free vouchers covering DP-600, DP-700 and DP-800, so check for an open round before paying. The full certifications overview maps exams to roles.
Now the caveat I would want if I were you. A certificate is close to worthless taken before you can write a windowed aggregation without looking it up, or explain why your job re-reads the same file twice. People in that position pass, post it, and fail the first technical screen, which is worse than not applying yet. If that is you, spend eight weeks on SQL and one orchestrator first. A structured Excel, SQL, Python and Power BI track repairs that gap more cheaply than any engineering course.
Adjacent routes: the AWS Solutions Architect and DevOps path if your targets run on AWS, the AZ-305 and AZ-400 Azure track for platform work, and MLOps via AI-300 if your pipelines will feed models rather than dashboards. Retrieval teams now want data engineers who understand chunking and embedding stores, the overlap covered in RAG and AI agent engineering. What Goes Wrong With Data Engineer Pay Expectations
- Transitions run long. Nine months is the plan; eleven to fourteen is common once notice periods count.
- Some moves cost money first. Leaving a senior services title for a mid-level product role can mean a flat or lower offer, bought for a faster curve later.
- Total compensation is not take-home. A 28 LPA GCC offer may carry 6 to 8 LPA in variable and equity vesting over four years.
- Entry roles are scarcer than they look. The 24,308 listings include senior and duplicate postings; open fresher roles are a thin slice.
- No course, exam or article can promise a job, a hike or an amount. Every figure here is what the market advertises, not what you will be offered.
The failure I see most is subtler. Someone spends six months collecting tools, Airflow and dbt and Spark and Kafka and Iceberg, a week each, then cannot answer a follow-up on any of them. Nobody asks "have you used Kafka". They ask what happens when a consumer group rebalances mid-batch, and it falls over in ten seconds.
Is data engineering a good career in 2026 if you are starting now
By volume the answer holds: 24,308 listed roles, and the skill sits underneath most AI work, so demand rides two trends rather than one. The counterweight is that the job carries real operational duty. You will be the person called at 2am, and if that is the part you were hoping to avoid, analytics or BI is the better door. Frequently asked questions
What is the average data engineer salary in India in 2026?
No single average is worth quoting, because the services and product markets differ so sharply. Advertised ranges in September 2026 run 4.5 to 8 LPA at entry level, 8 to 15 LPA at two to five years in services, 15 to 28 LPA at that experience in product firms and GCCs, and 40 to 60 LPA for platform roles past eight years. Advertised ranges, not guarantees.
What is the data engineer salary for freshers in India?
Advertised fresher bands cluster at 4.5 to 6.5 LPA for standard intakes, rising to 7 to 9 LPA for candidates with shipped projects rather than coursework. Product firms and GCCs advertise 8 to 15 LPA for the same bracket but hire far fewer into it.
Is data engineering a good career in 2026 in India?
By volume yes: Glassdoor listed 24,308 open data engineer roles in India in September 2026, and the skill underpins most AI work. The counterweight is intense entry-level competition and real operational duty, including being called when a load fails overnight.
How much more do GCCs and product companies pay than IT services firms?
Public 2026 salary compilations for India put the gap at roughly 50 to 100 percent for equivalent experience. In practice a four-year engineer advertised at 12 LPA in services sees comparable GCC roles advertised at 18 to 26 LPA. Interview difficulty rises with the number.
Does DP-700 certification increase a data engineer's salary?
No listing prices a certificate directly. DP-700, the Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer Associate exam, costs about USD 165 and mainly improves the odds of clearing keyword filters. The offer is set by what you can explain in the technical rounds.
What is the difference between an Azure data engineer salary and a Databricks-focused role?
Azure and Fabric roles typically advertise slightly below Databricks-heavy roles at the same experience, because the candidate pool is larger. 2026 compilations report a 15 to 25 percent premium for deep lakehouse skills, while the Azure route offers more openings and an easier entry for switchers.
What I would do in your position: pick one stack, Fabric if your employer already runs Microsoft and Spark if you are free to choose, build two projects you can defend under questioning, and treat the certificate as a recruiter filter rather than the goal. Apply while still employed, because negotiating from a position of not needing the job beats any extra course. If the Microsoft route fits, the Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer course is the logical next step, and a free demo class will tell you in one evening whether the pace suits you.
