Comparison · 2026PL-300 vs DP-700 in 2026: Which Microsoft Data Certification Gets You Hired Faster in India?
PL-300 vs DP-700 splits on one line: PL-300 certifies Power BI analysis and DAX, DP-700 certifies Fabric pipelines and Spark. Both are $165 associate exams, listed at Rs 4,865 on Microsoft's India page, and both run 100 minutes. Analysts and career switchers should take PL-300 first.
- Same price, different job. Both exams sit on Microsoft's $165 associate tier. The Microsoft India page lists PL-300 at Rs 4,865, and DP-700 is on the same tier.
- The deciding question is what you write all day. More DAX than Spark, take PL-300. More Spark and SQL than DAX, take DP-700.
- PL-300 has four domains, DP-700 has three. DP-700's three are weighted 30 to 35 percent each, so there is no soft section to coast through.
- DP-700 replaced the retired DP-203 as Microsoft's data engineering exam, which is why older Azure Data Engineer study plans now send you the wrong way.
- Pay favours DP-700, hiring volume favours PL-300. Naukri's Power BI listing showed just over 30,000 open roles when we checked on 27 September 2026.
- The honest default: PL-300 first, DP-600 or DP-700 about nine months later, unless you already run production pipelines.
Your Power BI report refreshes in 40 seconds on your laptop and times out in the Service on Monday morning, and the fix turns out to have nothing to do with Power BI. Somebody upstream changed a column type in a pipeline you have never seen. That moment is where this decision starts, because it is where you find out whether you want to be the person who builds the report or the person who owns the pipeline. Microsoft sells a different certification for each answer.
PL-300 vs DP-700: the one question that settles it
Forget the marketing pages. Open your last ten working days and count what you actually typed. If most of it was DAX measures, Power Query steps, relationship fixes and stakeholder wrangling, you are an analyst and PL-300 is your exam. If most of it was PySpark notebooks, SQL merges, scheduling and the question of why last night's load ran twice, you are an engineer and DP-700 is your exam.
That sounds glib. It holds up anyway, because these exams test different muscles rather than different levels of the same muscle. PL-300 asks you to turn messy tables into a semantic model a business can trust. DP-700 asks you to land data reliably at scale and find the bottleneck when it stops landing. A strong report builder fails DP-700 not because it is harder, but because nothing in report building teaches you to read a Spark execution plan.
Where Microsoft Fabric changed the map
Fabric collapsed the analyst and engineer stacks into one workspace, which makes people assume one certification now covers both. It does not. Fabric gave the two roles the same address, not the same job. There is a third door: DP-600, the Fabric Analytics Engineer exam, covers semantic models and Direct Lake and sits genuinely between them. Microsoft Learn notes its English version updates on 19 October 2026, so check those objectives after that date rather than before.
What each certification actually tests
Both exams share a format: 40 to 60 questions, 100 minutes of answering time inside a roughly 120 minute appointment, and a scaled pass mark of 700 out of 1000. The similarity stops there. The domain splits are what your study calendar will actually look like.
PL-300 domain weights
Modelling and visuals dominate. Governance is the section most candidates underprepare.
Microsoft publishes these as ranges (25 to 30 percent for the first three, 15 to 20 percent for the fourth) in the skills outline refreshed 20 April 2026. Midpoints shown. Checked 27 September 2026.
DP-700 domain weights
Three near-equal domains, so partial preparation shows up immediately in the score report.
Microsoft publishes all three as 30 to 35 percent in the skills outline dated 20 April 2026. Midpoints shown. Checked 27 September 2026.
Inside the Microsoft Fabric data engineer certification
The DP-700 objective list is unusually honest about the job. You are tested on workspace settings, Git integration and deployment pipelines, on batch and streaming ingestion through Data Factory pipelines, Dataflow Gen2, notebooks, shortcuts and mirroring, then on monitoring and fixing what you built. Three languages appear in one exam: PySpark, SQL and KQL. If you have never written KQL, budget a weekend for it alone, because the real-time intelligence questions are not decorative. 360DT's live Microsoft Fabric data engineering programme runs those ingestion and monitoring labs in class rather than leaving them as reading.
Inside the Power BI certification India employers still ask for
PL-300 is the exam Indian job descriptions name outright, usually as "PL-300 preferred". The under-rated section is the fourth: workspaces, row level security, deployment and sharing. Candidates who build good reports and never touched an admin setting lose most of their marks there. The other trap is DAX filter context, specifically CALCULATE with multiple filter arguments, which is the commonest reason a confident analyst scores 650.

PL-300 vs DP-700 compared across 12 criteria
| Criterion | PL-300 | DP-700 |
|---|---|---|
| Certification title | Power BI Data Analyst Associate | Fabric Data Engineer Associate |
| Core skill tested | Power Query, data modelling, DAX, report design | PySpark, SQL, KQL, pipelines, orchestration |
| Domains | 4 (27 / 27 / 27 / 19 percent midpoints) | 3 (roughly 33 percent each) |
| Questions and time | 40 to 60 questions, 100 minutes | 40 to 60 questions, 100 minutes |
| Pass mark | 700 of 1000 | 700 of 1000 |
| Fee tier | $165, listed Rs 4,865 on Microsoft's India page | $165 associate tier, about Rs 4,800 plus local taxes |
| Assumed prior skill | Excel and basic SQL | Working SQL plus Python or Scala |
| Realistic study hours | 60 to 90 hours | 90 to 130 hours |
| Replaces | Nothing, it is the long-running analyst exam | The retired DP-203 Azure data engineer exam |
| Typical job titles | Data Analyst, BI Analyst, Reporting Analyst | Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, Fabric Engineer |
| Hiring volume in India | Higher, analyst roles are the larger pool | Lower volume, higher pay per role |
| Validity and renewal | One year, free online renewal | One year, free online renewal |
Exam facts both certifications share
Format is identical, so your decision is about content and career, never about difficulty of the test day.
Figures from Microsoft exam pages and the Microsoft India pricing display, checked 27 September 2026. Regional pricing and taxes apply, so confirm the amount at scheduling.
DP-700 exam cost and the total bill nobody budgets for
The exam fee is the small number. Here is the honest total for a self-funded candidate in India.
| Cost line | PL-300 path | DP-700 path |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | Rs 4,865 as listed | About Rs 4,800 plus taxes |
| Practice environment | Power BI Desktop is free on Windows | Fabric trial capacity, then a paid F SKU once the trial ends |
| Study time at 10 hours a week | 6 to 9 weeks | 9 to 13 weeks |
| Retake risk | Lower, most failures are DAX gaps | Higher if you have never used Spark at work |
| Renewal cost | Free, annually | Free, annually |
The line that catches people is Fabric capacity. Power BI Desktop is free and runs on your laptop, so PL-300 practice costs nothing. Fabric practice is free only while your trial capacity lasts, and a lapsed trial in week seven of a twelve week plan is the commonest reason DP-700 candidates stall. Microsoft has also run Fabric Data Days voucher campaigns handing out free exam codes, so check whether one is open before paying full price. The full certifications overview shows how these stack with the Azure and Claude tracks.
Which pays more in India in 2026
DP-700 wins on money. PL-300 wins on how many doors it opens. Both statements are true at the same time, and confusing them is how people end up with the wrong certificate.
Advertised pay bands, analyst versus data engineer
The gap opens at three years, not at entry. Before that the two tracks pay similarly.
Industry job-listing reports suggest these advertised ranges for India. Ranges vary widely by city and employer tier, and product companies typically advertise well above IT services for the same years. Checked 27 September 2026.
Volume points the other way. Naukri's Power BI jobs listing showed just over 30,000 open vacancies when we checked on 27 September 2026. There is no equivalent figure for Fabric-specific engineering titles, because the discipline is younger and postings usually read "Data Engineer, Azure and Fabric" rather than naming the certification.
Read that as a first-job argument, not a ceiling argument. A bigger pool of PL-300 shaped roles means a faster first interview; the gap that opens at year three means the engineer track is worth planning for even if you do not start there. That is why our live PL-300 data analyst course teaches SQL and Python alongside Power BI rather than treating them as extras.
Choose PL-300 if, choose DP-700 if
Choose PL-300 if
- You are switching in from a non-engineering job: finance, operations, sales reporting, teaching, anything Excel-heavy. The on-ramp is genuinely shorter.
- Your target employers are Indian IT services, banks, insurers or GCC reporting teams, where "PL-300 preferred" appears verbatim in the job description.
- You have no way to run Spark at work, so DP-700 practice would be theoretical.
- You want a certification you can finish in about eight weeks alongside a full-time job.
Choose DP-700 if
- You already write SQL every week and can read Python without a tutorial open in another tab.
- Your employer has already bought Fabric capacity, which means practice, internal credibility and a promotion case all line up.
- You were studying for DP-203 and stopped when it retired. DP-700 is where that preparation now goes.
- You are three or more years into an analyst role and your pay has flattened.
One case does not fit either list. If your company runs on AWS or Databricks rather than the Microsoft stack, a Fabric-specific certification buys you far less internally, and an AWS architecture and DevOps track or a platform-neutral data engineering path is the better spend. Certifications are worth most when they match the platform your employer already pays for.
A worked scenario: two people, one insurer, one budget
This is an illustrative scenario, not a client story. Picture a two-person data team at a mid-size general insurer in Pune. The reporting lead has four years of Excel and two of Power BI, and spends her week on claims dashboards. The recent hire writes SQL daily and has done some Python. The company bought Fabric capacity nine months ago and is halfway off a legacy warehouse. Budget covers one certification each, with about 30 spare hours a month per person.
The wrong instinct is to send both to DP-700 because the company bought Fabric. Here is what pays back.
Reporting lead takes PL-300
She is the one stakeholders chase, and her weak spot is row level security across three business units, the domain most candidates skip. Eight weeks at 30 hours a month is realistic.
Done by week 8New hire takes DP-700
He has the SQL and enough Python, and the migration gives him real pipelines to break and fix. KQL and Spark tuning are his gaps, so budget 12 weeks.
Done by week 12Practice comes from the migration
Every Dataflow Gen2 and deployment pipeline the migration needs doubles as exam preparation. It is the cheapest study environment there is, and it disappears when the project ends.
Free capacityThe reporting lead adds DP-600 later
Nine months on, with PL-300 done and the models on Direct Lake, DP-600 is her natural second exam rather than DP-700. It extends her job instead of replacing it.
Month 9Total outlay is under Rs 10,000 in exam fees, and the team ends up with one certified analyst and one certified engineer instead of two half-prepared engineers. Send both to DP-700 instead and the likely result is one failed Spark and KQL attempt plus three months of unattended claims dashboards.
What usually goes wrong here
- Studying DP-203 material for DP-700. A large amount of older Azure data engineering content still ranks well and is now aimed at a retired exam. Check the skills outline date before you trust a study plan.
- Letting the Fabric trial lapse mid-study. Plan your twelve weeks around the trial window or get your employer to attach you to an existing capacity.
- Treating PL-300 as a visuals exam. Roughly a fifth of it is administration and security. Report-building practice alone leaves that fifth untouched.
- Booking both exams in the same month. The formats are identical, the content is not, and context switching between DAX and Spark in the same fortnight is how both scores land in the 600s.
- Forgetting renewal. Associate certifications expire after a year. The renewal is free and open book, but it is easy to miss the six month eligibility window and have to sit the full exam again.
Here is what the certification pages will not tell you. Neither exam gets you hired on its own. A PL-300 badge with no published work behind it loses every time to a candidate with two well-built dashboards who can explain the model behind them. What the certification buys you is a filter pass and a deadline. Treat it as the deadline and it earns its Rs 4,865. Treat it as the product and you become the person with three badges and no callbacks.
A 12-week plan that works for either exam
Both exams reward the same rhythm: build something real, then study the gap it exposed. This assumes about ten hours a week around a full-time job.
Fix the foundation you are missing
Analysts: Power Query transformations and star schema design. Engineers: SQL window functions and reading a Spark plan. Deliverable is one cleaned dataset loaded end to end.
Take the heaviest domain first
For PL-300 that is modelling and DAX filter context. For DP-700 that is ingestion through pipelines, Dataflow Gen2 and notebooks. Deliverable is a working model or a scheduled pipeline.
Do the domain you would rather skip
Workspaces, row level security and deployment for PL-300. KQL and real-time intelligence for DP-700. Deliverable is a secured workspace with two audiences that see different rows.
Break it on purpose
Change a source schema, double a data volume, kill a refresh halfway. Deliverable is a one-page note on what failed, what the error said and how you fixed it, which is also your best interview story.
Practice questions, then targeted revision
Score a full-length practice set, then spend the fortnight only on domains below 70 percent. Deliverable is a second score with no domain under 75 percent.
Book the exam, then polish the portfolio
Schedule it before you feel ready, because the date is what finishes the study. Deliverable is the booking plus a public repository or portfolio page with the project from week 7.
For a fast version of week one, the free webinars cover star schemas and pipeline basics in a single session. Data modelling, DAX and the security domain are taught live across ten weekends in the analyst programme, which is the structure most self-study plans lack.

The verdict on PL-300 vs DP-700
Take PL-300 first. That is the answer for most people reading this, and it is not a hedge.
The reasoning is about sequence, not about which certification is better. PL-300 sits in front of a larger pool of Indian roles, needs no paid infrastructure to practise on, and can be finished in eight weeks by someone with a job and a commute. It also builds the semantic modelling instinct that makes you a better engineer later, because an engineer who has never had to explain a wrong number to a stakeholder builds pipelines that are technically correct and commercially useless.
The trade-off I am accepting is real: you will earn less for about two years than someone who went straight to DP-700, and you will pay a second exam fee later. It is still worth it, because the other path fails harder. Candidates who jump to DP-700 without production SQL and Python tend to fail once, lose three months and often drop the track.
The exception is narrow and you will know if it is you. If you already write SQL daily, already have Fabric capacity at work, and are three years into an analyst role watching your increments shrink, skip PL-300 and go straight to DP-700 with a live Fabric programme. You will be revising, not learning, and that is the fastest certification you will ever take.
Plan for one more thing. Both certifications now sit next to AI work, which is why Copilot administration and applied AI engineering appear in data job descriptions that did not mention them two years ago. Pick the exam that matches this year's work, and keep one eye there.

Frequently asked questions
PL-300 vs DP-700: which should I take first in 2026?
Take PL-300 first unless you already write SQL and Python at work every week. PL-300 needs no paid infrastructure to practise on, maps to a larger pool of open roles in India, and can be completed in roughly eight weeks alongside a full-time job. Move to DP-700 once you own pipelines rather than reports.
How much does the DP-700 exam cost in India?
DP-700 sits on Microsoft's $165 associate tier, which works out to roughly Rs 4,800 plus local taxes. The Microsoft India page lists the equivalent PL-300 fee as Rs 4,865. Regional pricing changes, so confirm the amount shown at scheduling, and check whether a Fabric Data Days voucher campaign is running first.
Is PL-300 enough to get a data analyst job in India?
It is enough to get past screening filters, not enough to get an offer. Indian employers pair "PL-300 preferred" with a portfolio expectation, so plan on two or three dashboards you can explain end to end, plus working SQL. The certification shortens the shortlist stage; the projects win the interview.
Do PL-300 and DP-700 certifications expire?
Yes. Microsoft associate certifications expire one year after you earn them. Renewal is free through a shorter open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn, which you can take during a six month eligibility window before expiry and retake as often as you need. Fundamentals certifications, such as DP-900, do not expire.
Can I skip PL-300 and go straight to DP-700?
Yes, there is no prerequisite. It is a good idea only if you already write SQL comfortably and can read Python or Scala. DP-700 tests PySpark, SQL and KQL in the same exam, and candidates without production experience in at least one of those usually need 120 hours or more of preparation.
Is DP-700 the replacement for DP-203?
In practice, yes. DP-203 was the Azure data engineer exam and has been retired, and DP-700 is the Fabric-era data engineering certification that took its place. This matters for study material: a lot of highly ranked DP-203 content is still online and now points at objectives that are no longer tested.
What is the difference between DP-600 and DP-700?
DP-600 is the Fabric Analytics Engineer certification and covers semantic models, Direct Lake and the analytics layer. DP-700 covers ingestion, orchestration and pipeline monitoring. The usual rule of thumb is that if you write more DAX than Spark, DP-600 fits better. Microsoft Learn notes the DP-600 English version updates on 19 October 2026.
How long does it take to prepare for both certifications?
Budget 60 to 90 hours for PL-300 and 90 to 130 hours for DP-700 if you are starting from working Excel and basic SQL. At ten hours a week that is about eight weeks and twelve weeks respectively. Do not book them in the same month, because switching between DAX and Spark that quickly tends to drag both scores down.
