Moving from system administrator to DevOps engineer usually takes six to ten months of focused part-time study, because you already own Linux, networking and on-call instincts. What you add is code: Git, one cloud platform, Terraform, containers and a CI/CD pipeline. Indian listings for DevOps engineers with three to six years commonly advertise 12 to 22 LPA.
- You start further along than you think. Linux internals, storage and 2am incident judgement take other candidates years. What you lack is version control as a habit.
- Eight months is the honest timeline at six to eight study hours a week.
- Advertised bands, not promises. Indian boards in September 2026 advertise roughly 8 to 14 LPA at two to four years, 14 to 22 LPA at four to seven.
- Terraform before Kubernetes. Cheaper to certify, faster to demo, and it turns what you know into a portfolio artefact.
- Your first move may be flat on cash. Many admins take the title first, then re-price at the next switch.
It is 2:10am and you are SSHed into the third of nine app servers, hand-applying the same config change, because the window shuts at 4. You have done this for six years and you are good at it. Then every posting that pays what you want asks for Terraform, a pipeline and a Git history.

You have written a Bash script longer than forty lines that somebody else now depends on. You can explain what happens between a user typing a URL and the page rendering, without looking it up. And you have been on call, so you have opinions about what a useful alert looks like. That is most of a DevOps interview.

Across fifty Indian postings, seven items recur: one cloud (AWS most often, Azure close behind in GCC hiring), Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, a CI/CD tool, Python, Linux. Linux you can stop worrying about. In an Azure shop, substitute AZ-305 and AZ-400.
What the Switch Pays: Advertised Bands in September 2026
Naukri's DevOps listing page carried 37,633 vacancies when we checked it, foundit.in showed 28,985 DevOps jobs in India on 14 September 2026, and Naukri listed 17,823 DevSecOps vacancies that month. A deep market, which cuts both ways: you will get interviews, and so will everyone else.

The SRE band overlaps senior DevOps but reaches higher, because on-call ownership and service level objectives are priced separately from pipeline work. An 8-Month Plan to Switch From System Administrator to DevOps Engineer
Six to eight hours a week: one weekday evening, one weekend session. Each month ends in something you can put in a repository, because a public commit history is the most persuasive thing you carry into an interview. Do not build a Kubernetes cluster from scratch at month 6; deploy to a managed one.

DevOps Certification for System Administrators: What to Take First
Certificates do not get you hired. They get your resume past the filter that stops it reaching a human, which for a switcher is most of the problem.
What the four relevant exams cost in 2026
Budget for these in this order, not all at once
Fees published by the certification bodies, checked 22 September 2026. Indian purchases attract 18% GST plus a card forex markup.
The opinionated part: SAA-C03 first, Terraform Associate second, CKA only once you are already employed in DevOps. CKA is the priciest of the four and least useful to a switcher, because it certifies operating a cluster your first employer will buy as a managed service. Terraform Associate costs a fifth as much and recruiters read it as shorthand for having actually written infrastructure code. DOP-C02 assumes operational cloud experience, so it belongs at month ten.

For the eight study months your income does not move. The harder truth is that your first DevOps offer may not move it much either.
The pattern in Indian hiring is that a switcher's first offer gets priced against their DevOps experience, which is zero, not their total experience, which might be seven years. An admin on 9 LPA moving into a junior-to-mid DevOps seat can land between 9 and 13 LPA, occasionally at 8.5 with a six-month review attached. The compounding happens at the next switch, when you are a DevOps engineer with eighteen months of pipeline ownership rather than a career changer.
For scale, compensation studies reported in September 2026 put average Indian increments for 2026 near 8.9%, with attrition around 13.6%. Staying put is the slow path, and employers know it.
- Eight months becomes fourteen, usually because month 4 had no exam date attached. Book the exam before you study for it.
- You take an unplanned pay cut. Decide your floor in advance. A 10% dip for a real DevOps title can be rational; 25% usually is not.
- Badges and no artefacts. Three certificates with an empty GitHub profile read worse than one certificate and a working pipeline.
- The internal move is blocked. Many services firms will not pull a billable admin off a project. Treat the internal route as a bonus.
- Deep market, crowded queue. Tens of thousands of listings means tens of thousands of applicants.
Case Study: A Linux Admin in Pune Moving Into DevOps

An admin with seven years at a mid-size services firm in Pune, on 11 LPA, running roughly 200 RHEL instances for a European insurance client. Strong on storage and networking, no Git, seven study hours a week.
Months 1 to 3 go to Git and AWS fundamentals; SAA-C03 clears in month 4, two weeks late because IAM policy evaluation needed a second pass. Months 4 and 5 are Terraform and a pipeline, built around the thing they already understood deeply: a repeatable RHEL build, now a module rather than a 14-page runbook. Then an on-call week erases all study time, the internal DevOps team freezes headcount, and the first four interviews go badly because the answers are about tools instead of decisions.
By month nine the offer that lands is a DevOps seat at a product company's Pune development centre, in the low teens: a modest step on cash, a large one on ownership. Eighteen months later, with a pipeline and a rotation genuinely owned, the next conversation starts from a different band. Anyone promising a single leap from 11 to 25 is selling something.
Your Resume and the Salary Conversation
Delete every bullet beginning "responsible for". Replace them with outcomes containing a number and a tool.
- Codified provisioning for a 40-instance RHEL estate in Terraform, cutting a 14-step manual build to one apply with remote state in S3.
- Built a GitHub Actions pipeline with lint, test, image build and staged deploy, replacing a Friday-night manual release window.
- Replaced 30 disk-threshold alerts with four symptom-based Prometheus alerts tied to user-facing latency.
- Held primary on-call for 200 production hosts for three years, with written postmortems for two Sev-1 incidents.
That last line is not new work. It is work you already did, in the language the hiring manager reads.
What usually goes wrong here
A recruiter asks your CTC on the first call, you answer, and the offer arrives anchored to that number plus a token bump. You cannot always avoid disclosing, but you can reframe first:
"My current package is X, but it was set for a systems administration scope. I am interviewing for DevOps roles where I own infrastructure code and pipelines, and listings at that scope sit between A and B. I would like the offer benchmarked against the role, not my last title. Happy to walk through the Terraform and pipeline work I have shipped."
Then stop talking. The discomfort in that pause is where the negotiation happens. If the answer is a firm no, ask for a written six-month review tied to named deliverables, because vague promises do not survive a manager change.

Age is less of an obstacle here than in most switches, because DevOps hiring values incident experience and production judgement, which accumulate with years. What gets harder at 38 is the study time, not the learning.
Which certification should a system administrator take first, SAA-C03 or CKA?
SAA-C03 at $150 plus GST, then Terraform Associate at $70.50. CKA costs $445 and certifies cluster operation your first employer will most likely buy as a managed service: strong once you are inside a DevOps role, inefficient as a door-opener.
What I would do in your position
Book the SAA-C03 exam for month four this week, before reading another roadmap, because a paid date is the only thing that reliably converts intention into study hours. Put your existing Bash scripts into a public repository this weekend; it costs one evening and makes you look like someone who works in version control. Then stop optimising the plan. The admins who complete this move are not the ones with the best sequence, they are the ones who reached month four with something committed.
