Career & Salary · 2026DevOps to MLOps Engineer in India 2026: The 7-Month Plan, What Transfers and What It Pays
Moving from DevOps to MLOps engineer takes most working engineers six to nine months, because the container, IaC and pipeline skills transfer directly and only the model lifecycle layer is genuinely new. Indian listings advertise MLOps roles roughly 10 to 25 percent above equivalent DevOps roles, and LinkedIn India carries far fewer of them.
- Your pipeline skills are the asset. Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker and a CI system appear in almost every MLOps listing. You are not starting from zero.
- Four things are new: experiment tracking, a model registry, evaluation gates that are statistical rather than pass or fail, and drift monitoring after deployment.
- The market is thin. LinkedIn India listed 10,000+ DevOps engineer roles against 1,000+ MLOps roles on 30 September 2026.
- AI-300 replaced DP-100, and about half its published weight now sits in generative AI operations.
- Expect a lateral move first. Most engineers reprice at the second move, not the first.
- Python is the real gate, not ML theory. If you cannot read a training script and say what it logs, no certificate carries you through the interview.
You own the deployment story at your company. Jenkins, Helm charts, a Terraform state file nobody else will touch, an on-call rota. Then the data science team hands you a notebook and a pickle file and asks you to put it in production, and none of your usual questions apply: no version number, no test that fails honestly, nobody able to say what "working" means six weeks later. That gap is the entire MLOps job.
Is the DevOps to MLOps Engineer Switch Realistic for You?
Three things need to be true. You write code rather than only configure it, because you will spend your days reading training scripts someone else wrote. You have shipped something with an SLA attached, since MLOps interviews probe incident stories hard. And you have models somewhere in your orbit: a data science team, an analytics group, even a vendor API your employer already pays for. Without that third one you are studying in a vacuum, and it shows.
The honest counter-case: if you are a Windows-heavy infrastructure engineer with no scripting habit, the shortest path to more money is cloud architecture, not MLOps, and a live AZ-305 and AZ-400 program maps to roles that exist in volume near you. MLOps rewards people who were already half developer.
The mistake that costs three months
You do not need to become a data scientist. The common self-inflicted delay is a linear algebra refresher before touching anything operational. Nobody tests whether you can derive backpropagation. They test whether you can explain why a model that scored 0.91 AUC in a notebook scores 0.78 on last month's traffic, and what you would instrument to catch it next time. Learn enough for that conversation, then go build pipelines.

What Transfers From DevOps to MLOps, and What Doesn't
Read twenty MLOps listings on Naukri or LinkedIn and the requirements look familiar. Kubernetes. Terraform or Bicep. Docker. A CI system. Cloud identity. Then two or three lines at the bottom that are not DevOps at all, and those lines are the whole interview.
| What you already have | What MLOps adds on top | How to close it |
|---|---|---|
| CI/CD with deterministic tests | Gates on a metric, where a 2 percent drop is a judgement call, not a red build | Wire a threshold check into a CI job that reads an MLflow run metric and fails the merge |
| Artifact registries for images | A model registry with stage transitions, lineage to training data and approvals | Register three versions of one model, promote one, roll it back |
| Terraform or Bicep | The same IaC provisioning GPU compute that bills by the minute and idles by default | Stand up an endpoint with autoscale to zero, then read the bill after a week |
| Uptime, latency, error rate | Data drift and quality regression, none of which page you when they happen | Log input distributions weekly, compute a stability index, alert on the shift |
| Git-based release trains | Data and feature versioning, because the same code on different data is a different model | Version a dataset with DVC or Delta Lake time travel, reproduce an old run exactly |
| Secrets, RBAC, network policy | Prompt and output logging for generative systems, with PII redaction before storage | Build logging middleware that redacts before write, not after |

MLOps engineer skills 2026: the four layers you have to add
Strip away the tool names and the new surface area is small. One extra loop bolted onto the pipeline you already run, closing on data rather than on code.
Where your DevOps pipeline ends and the ML loop begins
The top row is what you already operate. The bottom row is what makes this a different job.

Tracking and the registry are the easy half. MLflow is the answer at most Indian employers, standalone or managed inside Azure Machine Learning and Databricks, and three calls give you most of it: start a run, log parameters and metrics, log the artefact. The registry on top is an artifact repository with approvals and lineage. Build one promotion pipeline end to end and you can speak about it fluently for the rest of your career.
Evaluation and drift are the hard half. Your test suites are binary; model evaluation is not, and generative evaluation is worse, because the output is text, the grader is often another model, and the score moves when the prompt changes. Worse still, nothing pages you when a model quietly degrades: the system is up, latency is fine, errors are zero, and the predictions have been wrong for five weeks. Choosing the threshold at which a retrain fires is the most senior item on this list and the one interviewers use to sort candidates. It is also the part of 360DT's live MLOps Engineer program that DevOps engineers find least familiar, since it asks you to reason about distributions rather than assertions. If your destination is a generative AI platform team instead, the adjacent skills are RAG and agent operations, which the AI Engineer course covers live.
How to Switch From DevOps to MLOps Engineer in 7 Months
This assumes you are employed, have ten to twelve hours a week, and are not quitting. Quitting to study is almost always wrong here: the strongest thing on your resume will be an ML workload you operated at your current employer, and you cannot get that from home.
| Month | Focus | What you finish with | Hrs/week |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Python that reads like an engineer's: typing, packaging, pytest, pandas basics | One internal CLI tool you wrote, packaged and tested | 10 |
| 2 | Train and track: scikit-learn end to end, MLflow runs, metrics logged | A repo with 20 tracked runs and a note on which won and why | 10 |
| 3 | Azure Machine Learning: workspace, compute, datastores, managed endpoints | A registered model serving behind an authenticated endpoint | 12 |
| 4 | Pipeline it: scheduled training, promotion gated on a metric, IaC for the workspace | A Bicep or Terraform module that rebuilds the workspace from scratch | 12 |
| 5 | GenAIOps: prompt versioning, an evaluation harness, tracing, cost per request | An LLM feature with a regression suite and a cost dashboard | 12 |
| 6 | Drift and observability, then AI-300 prep against the published domain weights | A drift job that alerts, and a booked exam date | 12 |
| 7 | Internal move: take the ML workload at work, rewrite the resume around systems you ran | Two resume lines naming a model, a pipeline and a number | 8 |
This is a study and portfolio sequence, not a hiring timeline. How long the search itself takes depends on your city, your employer and the market at the time.
The two resume lines that do the work
Most DevOps resumes list tools. Rewrite yours around systems with numbers in them: "Built the promotion pipeline for a churn model in Azure ML: MLflow tracking, registry approval gated on AUC, Bicep-provisioned managed endpoint, weekly drift job on 14 input features." And: "Cut idle GPU spend by moving scheduled training to autoscale-to-zero clusters." Recruiters screening for MLOps look for exactly those nouns.

AI-300 Certification: What the MLOps Exam Actually Tests
Microsoft retired DP-100 and replaced it with AI-300, Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate. That is more than a rename: the new blueprint pulls generative AI operations into the exam, and roughly half the published weight now sits in GenAIOps infrastructure, quality assurance and optimisation. If you studied DP-100 two years ago, you are studying a different exam.
AI-300 skills measured, by published weight
Model lifecycle is the largest single block, but the three generative blocks together are bigger.
Weights are the ranges published in Microsoft's AI-300 study guide; bars are scaled to the midpoint of each range and normalised to 100. Checked 30 September 2026.
Microsoft's role-based associate exams are priced at USD 165 globally, and the India price shown at booking has been reported around Rs 4,800 to Rs 4,865 during 2026. That is a small number beside the months of study, which is the right way to think about certification generally.
Would I take it? Yes, but second. The domain weights are a free syllabus and the exam forces you through Azure Machine Learning surface area you would otherwise skim. It is not what gets you shortlisted. A repository with a working promotion pipeline does more, so if you can fund only one thing this year, fund the thing that produces the repository. 360DT pairs AI-300 preparation with the Claude Certified Architect Foundations credential in the MLOps Engineer course, and the certifications overview shows how the credentials stack. Where generative AI is the real investment at your company, the AI-103 route through the Generative AI Developer course overlaps the GenAIOps half closely, and the CCAR-F prep course covers the agent architecture platform teams now ask about.

What the DevOps to MLOps Engineer Switch Pays in India
The premium is real and smaller than the internet suggests. upGrad's 2026 MLOps salary guide puts the role roughly 10 to 25 percent above equivalent DevOps roles, on the reasoning that it demands ML knowledge on top of infrastructure skills. Glassdoor's India page for MLOps engineer showed an average near Rs 16 lakh when we checked on 30 September 2026.
Advertised bands: DevOps against MLOps, same experience
A band shift, not a step change. It widens with seniority.
| Experience | DevOps, advertised | MLOps, advertised | What the higher listings ask for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 yrs | Rs 5 to 8 LPA | Rs 6 to 10 LPA | Python, one cloud, a tracked training project |
| 3 to 5 yrs | Rs 9 to 18 LPA | Rs 12 to 22 LPA | Kubernetes, MLflow, a registry and promotion gate you built |
| 5 to 8 yrs | Rs 18 to 28 LPA | Rs 20 to 35 LPA | GenAIOps, evaluation harnesses, GPU cost control |
| 8+ yrs | Rs 24 to 38 LPA | Rs 26 to 40 LPA and above | Platform ownership, multi-team governance, vendor strategy |
Collection basis: advertised ranges compiled from public salary aggregator pages and Indian job listings visible on 30 September 2026, including Glassdoor India and published 2026 salary guides. These are advertised ranges, not guarantees of what any individual will be offered. GCC and product listings sit at the top of each band, IT services listings at the bottom.
What moves you to the top of a band is not the certificate. It is domain plus scale: fraud models at a bank, recommendations at a marketplace, anything with a regulator attached. A GCC hiring for a global ML platform pays differently from a services firm staffing a client project, and that gap is frequently larger than the DevOps to MLOps gap itself.

Pay during the transition: what you give up first
Almost nobody gets the MLOps band on their first move. The usual pattern is a lateral internal move: same company, same CTC, new team, title changing at the next appraisal. You give up six to twelve months of compounding on your DevOps trajectory in exchange for repositioning. The alternative is an external move at par, where the employer buys your infrastructure skill and trains you on the ML half. Both feel like a loss at the time.
The pattern that hurts is a pay cut to enter a "real" ML team. Occasionally right, when the destination is a platform you genuinely cannot reach otherwise. More often a bad trade dressed as an investment, because that same team will hire you eighteen months later at market rate once you have shipped ML workloads where you already are. Budget the direct costs too: roughly Rs 4,800 for the exam, and Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000 a month of cloud spend if you leave compute running. The second number is the one people underestimate.
Case Study: Eight Months From Release Engineer to MLOps Engineer
Built from typical market paths, not a real named individual. It is here to show the shape and timing of the switch, including the parts that go badly.
Start point: a release engineer at a mid-size Pune IT services firm, 2019 batch, five years in, Rs 13 LPA. She owns Jenkins pipelines and Helm charts for a BFSI client, writes competent bash, and her Python is scripting-grade. The client's analytics team has two models in production, deployed by hand, with no version anyone can name.
Months 1 to 4. Python first, because she was honest about the gap: typing, pytest, packaging, enough pandas to read a training script. She rewrote a bash deployment tool as a packaged Python CLI, then took scikit-learn end to end with MLflow tracking every run. Azure Machine Learning followed: workspace, compute, datastores, a registered model behind a managed endpoint. The first real obstacle hit here. She burned roughly Rs 6,000 in a fortnight on a cluster she forgot to scale down. The Bicep module she wrote afterwards to tear the workspace down became her interview demo.
Month 5. The internal move, which she engineered rather than waited for. She offered to take over deployment of the client's two models. Her manager agreed because it solved a problem nobody wanted. No title change, no pay change, and the single highest-value month of the eight.
Months 6 to 7. GenAIOps, because the client had started an LLM pilot: prompt versioning, an evaluation set of 80 labelled examples, tracing, and a cost-per-request dashboard showing the pilot running three times more expensive than anyone assumed. She sat AI-300 at the end of month 7.
Month 8. Her first four applications went nowhere: the resume still read like a DevOps resume with a certificate stapled on. Rewriting it around the two models she operated and the cost number she produced changed the response rate immediately. She moved to a GCC platform team at Rs 19.5 LPA, inside the advertised 5 to 8 year band above, and roughly half that increase came from the company-type change rather than the role change. What she would do differently: start the internal move in month 2, not month 5. Everything that made her employable came from operating real models, and she delayed that while studying for a readiness she did not need.
Is MLOps a Good Career Switch? What Goes Wrong
It is a good switch for the right person, and the honest case against it is about market size rather than skill.
LinkedIn India listed 10,000+ open DevOps engineer roles against 1,000+ MLOps engineer roles when we checked on 30 September 2026, so the MLOps market is roughly an order of magnitude thinner.
That number cuts both ways. Thinner means fewer shots on goal and longer searches, especially outside Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and the NCR. It also means less competition per role, and 2026 India skills commentary consistently describes MLOps as hard to fill because the blend of software engineering, DevOps and ML is uncommon. Thin and hard to fill is a decent place to stand. Thin, in a city with no GCC presence, is not.
- The title exists but the job does not. Plenty of Indian postings say MLOps and describe a Kubernetes job with a model-shaped rumour attached. Ask how many models are in production and who owns retraining. A vague answer means a DevOps role with a better title.
- Study without access. Six months of courses with no production model near you produces a candidate who can define drift and has never seen it.
- The timeline slips past a year. Seven months assumes ten to twelve honest hours a week. With a demanding on-call rota and a family, twelve to fifteen months is realistic, and pretending otherwise makes month four feel like failure.
- Cloud bills. GPU compute left running is the most common self-inflicted cost in this transition. Budget alerts on day one, autoscale to zero by default.
- Certificate-first sequencing. Passing AI-300 before you have operated anything gets you a badge and a resume that still reads as DevOps.
One caveat that rarely gets said. If your company has no ML workload, no data team and no near-term plan for one, the internal path is closed and this switch gets materially harder. The honest move may be a cloud or platform role at a company that does have ML, then the switch from inside a year later. Slower, but better than eighteen months of applying from somewhere you cannot build evidence. If your interest sits closer to data pipelines than model serving, the Microsoft Fabric data engineering program targets a market considerably larger than MLOps in India, and the AWS SAA-C03 and DOP-C02 track suits deepening rather than pivoting. To test the weekend format against your schedule, there are free webinars and a demo class.

Frequently asked questions
Is DevOps to MLOps engineer a realistic switch without a data science degree?
Yes, and it is the most common entry route. Indian MLOps listings weight infrastructure skills heavily and expect working knowledge of the model lifecycle, not research ability. What you need is Python you can write unaided and enough statistics to reason about why a metric moved.
How long does it take to switch from DevOps to MLOps?
Six to nine months at ten to twelve hours a week, for someone already running production CI/CD. With heavy on-call duties or no ML workloads at your employer, twelve to fifteen months is more honest. The job search sits on top of that and varies by city.
What are the MLOps engineer skills 2026 job descriptions actually ask for?
Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform or Bicep, a CI system and cloud identity, which you likely have, plus MLflow or equivalent tracking, a model registry with promotion gates, evaluation harnesses and drift monitoring. Generative AI operations now appears in many listings too: prompt versioning, tracing and cost per request.
Should I take AI-300 or build projects first?
Build first. The exam is a good syllabus and forces you through the Azure Machine Learning surface area, but a repository containing a working promotion pipeline changes interviews in a way a badge does not. Sitting AI-300 around month 6, after you have operated something, gets you both.
Will I have to take a pay cut to move into MLOps?
Usually not, if you move laterally inside your company or take an external offer at par. Cuts show up when candidates chase a role on an ML platform they cannot otherwise reach. That trade is occasionally worth it and frequently is not, since the same team will hire you later at market rate once you have shipped ML workloads elsewhere.
Am I too old to switch to MLOps at 35?
Age matters less here than in most switches, because the role rewards production judgement and incident experience, which accumulate with years. What hurts at any age is a resume listing tools instead of systems. Rewrite it around what you operated, what broke and what you measured.
Do I need Kubernetes for an MLOps role in India?
It appears in most listings, though managed endpoints on Azure Machine Learning or SageMaker cover a lot of serving without it. Treat it as strongly expected rather than mandatory. If you already run it, that is one of your strongest transferable assets.
Which pays more in India, MLOps or DevOps?
Published 2026 guides such as upGrad's put MLOps roughly 10 to 25 percent above equivalent DevOps roles, and advertised bands compiled in September 2026 sit a few lakh higher at each experience level. The company type you join often moves pay more than the title does.
If you are three years into DevOps and wondering whether this is worth seven months, here is what I would do in your position. Spend the first fortnight finding out whether any model runs in production within reach of your team. If one does, start there and let the study follow the access, because everything that made the composite above employable came from operating real systems rather than coursework. If nothing does, treat that as the problem to solve first. When you want structure around it, the MLOps Engineer course runs live on weekends and covers the AI-300 and CCAR-F ground in the order this article recommends.
