Career & Salary · 2026Average Salary Hike on a Job Change in India 2026: Real Bands by Experience, Company Type and Skill
The average salary hike on a job change in India in 2026 typically lands between 15% and 30% of CTC, against an internal increment of about 9.1% that Aon projects across 1,400 organisations. AI, cloud and data specialists sit at the top of that band. Plain lateral moves sit near the bottom.
- Staying put pays about 9.1%. Aon, Deloitte and EY landed on the same 2026 projection, so your appraisal letter is not an outlier.
- A switch commonly adds 15% to 30%. Michael Page puts specialised expertise at up to 30% on a job change; Indeed found 26% of employers paying AI premiums of 31% to 50%.
- The premium is paid to hire, not to keep. In Indeed's 2026 India study, 54% of employees already working with AI said their pay was flat or down over the past year.
- Destination outranks title. GCCs are projected near 10.4% increments against 9.0% for IT-enabled services, from a higher base.
- The downside is real. Counteroffers, variable-heavy CTC and joining-bonus clawbacks can turn a headline 30% into almost no change in monthly credit.
Your appraisal letter arrived with 8.5% on it. Three weeks later a recruiter messaged you about a role paying nearly 40% more than what you earn now. Both numbers are real, and neither is a mistake. That gap is the single most important fact about Indian tech pay in 2026, and most people misread it as luck.
Average Salary Hike on a Job Change in India 2026: The Numbers That Matter
Three studies converged on the same figure for staying where you are. Aon's 32nd Annual Salary Increase and Turnover Survey, covering more than 1,400 organisations across 45 industries, projects an average India increment of 9.1% for 2026, up from 8.9% in 2025. Deloitte's Talent Outlook and EY's Future of Pay 2026 both arrived at 9.1% too.
The switch number is messier, because nobody publishes a clean national average. What exists is a set of bounds. Business Today's 23 September 2026 write-up of the Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026 reported increments stabilising at 8% to 12% while professionals with specialised expertise can secure up to 30% on a job change. Indeed's India study, built on 1,267 employers and 2,541 employees, found more than 40% of employers pricing AI-focused roles at an 11% to 30% premium over comparable non-AI positions, and another 26% at 31% to 50%. Put those together and 15% to 30% is the honest working band for a tech professional with a real skill to show.
Four numbers that set the 2026 market
Remember the gap between the first card and the last two.
As reported in public coverage of the named surveys, checked 29 September 2026. Survey and advertised ranges, not guarantees.
Why the Market Pays More to Hire You Than to Keep You
The mechanism is not sinister. Your increment comes from a budget fixed a year in advance, allocated as a percentage across a whole band, signed off by a finance team measured on cost growth. A competitor's offer comes from a hiring budget for one seat, defended by a manager who has been trying to fill it for four months. Two pools of money, two decision-makers, and only one of them feels any urgency.
Indeed's 2026 India study put a number on the consequence. While 66% of employers said they pay a premium for AI-skilled talent, 54% of employees already exposed to AI in daily work said their pay had stayed flat or fallen over the past year: 36% no change, 18% a decline. Learning the skill inside your current company is, on this evidence, one of the weakest ways to get paid for it.

Average Salary Hike on Job Change by Experience Band
Experience changes the shape of the offer, not just the size. Early on you are priced against a large supply of similar profiles, so the percentage looks good while the rupee gain stays small. Past about eight years the percentage compresses, because the base is large and employers start buying scope rather than skill.
| Experience | Typical IT CTC today (advertised) | Commonly reported hike on a switch | What the new offer usually buys | The usual ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 years | Rs 4 to 8 LPA; Michael Page puts the IT junior average near Rs 6.65 LPA | 15% to 25% | A brand upgrade and a real codebase | Fresher grids are standardised and rarely broken |
| 3 to 5 years | Rs 8 to 18 LPA | 20% to 35% | The largest percentage jumps in Indian tech | Scope stays capped |
| 6 to 9 years | Rs 16 to 30 LPA; Michael Page puts the IT mid-level average near Rs 20.75 LPA | 15% to 30% | Ownership of a service, team or client | Longer loops, higher rejection rates |
| 10 to 14 years | Rs 28 to 50 LPA; Michael Page puts the IT senior average near Rs 35.66 LPA | 10% to 25%, more of it variable and stock | Title, headcount, budget | Few seats; a lateral can take nine months |
Collection basis: CTC columns combine advertised ranges visible on Indian job boards in September 2026 with the IT averages reported from the Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026. Hike columns are commonly reported bands from the Michael Page and Indeed findings cited above. Market ranges, not guarantees.
The 3 to 5 year row is where most of the movement happens. You are cheap enough to hire without a committee, experienced enough to be productive in six weeks, and junior enough that nobody worries about leadership fit. If you sit there with a skill the market wants, this is the best negotiating position you will hold for a decade.
Salary Hike Percentage When Switching Jobs, by Company Type
Where you land matters more than the label on the role. A senior engineer title at an Indian services firm and the same title at a global capability centre are not priced in the same market, and the increment policies differ on top.
| Destination employer type | Commonly reported hike on a switch | Projected 2026 internal increment | What you accept in exchange |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian IT services to another IT services firm | 15% to 25% | Around 9.6% for IT services, 9.0% for IT-enabled services | Same delivery model, same bench risk, same work |
| Services to a global capability centre (GCC) | 25% to 40%, from a higher starting base | Reported at roughly 10.4%, the strongest sector in 2026 coverage | Longer loops, stricter background checks, foreign time-zone overlap |
| Services to an Indian product company | 25% to 40% | Varies widely; not covered as a single sector | Harder DSA and system design rounds, a real performance curve |
| Services to a funded startup | 30%+ is advertised, often with a large variable or ESOP component | Not meaningfully forecastable | Runway risk, thin process, ESOPs that may never be liquid |
| Staying put through an appraisal | Not applicable | 9.1% India average across 45 industries | Nothing, which is exactly the point |
Collection basis: hike columns are commonly reported bands from September 2026 coverage of the Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026 and the Indeed India employer study. Increment columns are as reported from Aon's 32nd Annual Salary Increase and Turnover Survey and public GCC sector coverage. Market ranges, not what any individual will receive.
What staying adds against what moving adds
The top two bars are what your employer decides. The bottom three are what the market decides.

What Actually Drives the Top of the Band
Four things move you from the middle of a band to the top of it, and years served is not one of them.
Scarce, verifiable skill
Business Standard reported in July 2026 that AI skills were commanding roughly Rs 36 lakh against Rs 26 lakh for comparable IT roles, a gap of about 38%. Naukri's JobSpeak index tells the demand side: AI and machine learning roles grew 31% year on year in August 2026 while overall white-collar hiring grew 14%, the index at 3,028 against 2,664. Scarcity is why the premium exists, and scarcity closes. The people who captured the 2018 cloud premium are not capturing it now.
Verifiable matters as much as scarce. A recruiter cannot price a claim, but can price an exam number and a repository they can open. 360DT's AI Engineer course runs the RAG and agent builds live over 16 weekend evenings, and the certifications overview maps which exam sits under which role.
Domain, not just stack
A data engineer who has handled regulated financial reporting is priced differently from one who has handled clickstream. The stack is identical. The risk the employer avoids by hiring you is not. This is the cheapest lever for anyone stuck in services, because you already own the domain and only lack the modern stack on top of it. A live Microsoft Fabric programme covering DP-700 and DP-900 pairs naturally with it.
The gap between your current pay and the target market rate
If you are underpaid today, your percentage will look spectacular and your absolute number will still sit below market. Negotiate from the advertised band for the role you are entering, never from your current CTC.
Is Switching Jobs Worth It in 2026?
Mostly yes on cash, and that is narrower than it sounds. A switch resets your base and every future percentage compounds on the new base, which is why the gap between a switcher and a stayer widens over a decade instead of staying constant. The case against is real: you lose accumulated trust, restart a performance cycle, and take on the risk that the team you join is not the team you interviewed with. Two quarters from a promotion you have in writing, staying is usually the better arithmetic.
Four paths from the same Rs 12 LPA base
The difference between the first card and the last is not talent. It is what you can prove.
Stay, appraisal
Switch, same skills
Switch, cloud certified
Switch, shipped AI work

How Much Hike Should You Ask For, and How to Say It
Most of the number is decided before anyone says a figure out loud. By the time HR asks for your expectation, the band is already fixed by the role, the level they slotted you into, and how many candidates are still live. The slotting is what you control.
Six moves that set your number before the offer arrives
Work through these in order. The first two are worth more than the last four combined.
Find the advertised band first
Open ten live listings for the exact title and level you want on Naukri and LinkedIn, and note every disclosed range. You now have a number that owes nothing to your current CTC.
Do this weekPut one provable artefact on the table
A passed exam with a code, a repository a reviewer can clone. An AWS SAA-C03 credential or a shipped retrieval pipeline changes the slotting. A tool list does not.
8 to 16 weeksRefuse to anchor on current CTC
"I would rather align to the band for this role than to my current package. Based on what similar roles advertise, I am looking at Rs X to Rs Y." Then stop talking. Most people lose by filling the silence.
ScriptNegotiate fixed pay, not CTC
Ask for the split before you react to the headline: fixed, variable, joining bonus, ESOP. A 30% CTC increase carrying a 25% variable can leave your monthly credit almost unchanged.
Ask for the breakupRun two processes, not one
A second live offer is the only leverage that reliably moves a number once the band is set. It need not be better. It must be real, and you should never claim one you do not have.
TimingGet the level in writing
Designation, reporting line and band code decide your next three increments. People fight hard over Rs 80,000 and accept a level that costs far more across four years.
Before you signDrawn from how Indian tech offers are commonly structured, September 2026. The bands must come from listings you check yourself.
The GCC Salary Premium in India, and How to Use It in a Negotiation
Public 2026 coverage puts global capability centres at the top of the sector increment table, near 10.4% against an India average of 9.1%, and GCC base pay consistently sits above comparable IT services roles at the same level. Use that two ways. Interviewing at a GCC, ask for the top of their band rather than a percentage on your old number. Holding a GCC offer elsewhere, cite it, because the other interviewer already knows it is true.
The caveat recruiters will not volunteer: GCC processes are slow. Background verification, a global compensation committee and a foreign hiring manager's calendar can add six to ten weeks between a verbal yes and a signed letter. Plan your notice around the letter, never the verbal.
What Goes Wrong on the Way to the New Offer
- The counteroffer trap. Your employer matches the number in a week, proving they could have paid it all along. You stay, and you are now a known flight risk.
- Variable-heavy structures. A headline 30% arriving as 22% fixed plus 8% performance-linked is not a 30% raise until the year closes and the company hits target.
- Joining bonus clawbacks. Many are repayable in full if you leave inside 12 or 24 months. Read the clause before you count the money.
- Offers that quietly disappear. Verbal offers get withdrawn during hiring freezes. Serve notice after the letter, not after the phone call.
- A pay cut on the way in. Changing function, not just company, can cost 10% to 20% for the first year. A fair investment, but not a surprise you want at signing.
- Timelines that run long. A senior lateral search can take six to nine months in a normal market. Budget for that rather than resigning first.
Here is what nobody tells you about the counteroffer. The problem is not the money. It is that the conversation permanently changes how your manager staffs you, because you have told them, accurately, that you were looking.
And a caveat about this whole article. A job change is the most reliable way to reprice yourself and a bad tool for fixing a problem that is not about pay. If you are burnt out, a 30% hike buys roughly four months of relief before the same exhaustion arrives with a new logo on it. Switching is a compensation instrument, not a recovery plan.
A Composite Case Study: Services Developer to AI Engineer
An illustrative composite built from typical market paths in India. Not a real named individual, and not an outcome claim.
Starting point. A backend developer in Pune, 2019 batch, five and a half years at a large Indian services firm, Rs 12 LPA with a Rs 1.1 lakh variable. Java and Spring Boot, one insurance client for three years, an April appraisal of 8.5%, about thirty usable study hours a month.
Months 1 to 4. Weekend study while staying employed: Python to a working standard, then embeddings, chunking and a retrieval pipeline over the policy documents he already understood. First obstacle, and it is the common one. The demo worked on his laptop and returned confident nonsense on anything the retriever missed. Fixing it meant learning evaluation before learning anything clever, which cost six unplanned weeks.
Months 5 to 7. An agent layer with tool calls, then a certification so the resume carried something a recruiter could verify. Exam prep is the cheap part here: the CCDV-F developer prep course at Rs 25,000 sits against a Rs 12 lakh salary being repriced.
Months 8 to 10. Twenty-two applications, four first rounds, two full loops. The insurance domain did more work in interviews than the certificate did, because he could explain why a claims retrieval system needs auditability and the other candidates could not. The first offer came in low with a heavy variable, so he declined and kept the second process running.
Destination. AI engineer at a Pune GCC, advertised band Rs 16 to 20 LPA at that level, offer in the lower half of it with a fixed component he checked line by line. Ten months from first study session to signed letter, not the six he had assumed. He kept his job throughout, which is what made it survivable.

Where to Start if You Have 30 Hours a Month
Pick the destination first, then the credential, then the project. The reverse order is how people end up with three certifications and no story. Heading for analytics, PL-300 and Power BI is the shortest defensible path. Running infrastructure, AZ-305 and AZ-400 or the AWS equivalent maps to the bands above. Already in ML, AI-300 MLOps is where the scarcity sits. Watching a Copilot rollout in your own company, AB-900 Copilot administration is a four-week commitment rather than a four-month one. One opinion, plainly: skip the prompt engineering certificate, because the premium in the Indeed data attaches to building and operating AI systems, not to writing prompts.
If I were that Pune developer, I would do what the evidence says and nothing more clever. Keep the job, build one retrieval and agent system on weekends in a domain I already know, put an exam code next to it, and start applying at month seven with a band taken from live listings rather than a percentage on my old CTC. If AI engineering is your destination, the AI Engineer course runs those builds live on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average salary hike on a job change in India in 2026?
No single body publishes a clean national average, but the bounds are documented. The Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026, reported by Business Today in September 2026, puts specialised expertise at up to 30% on a job change while annual increments stabilise at 8% to 12%. Indeed's India study found over 40% of employers pricing AI roles at an 11% to 30% premium and 26% at 31% to 50%. For a tech professional with a demonstrable skill, 15% to 30% is the honest working band.
Is a 30% hike realistic when switching jobs in India?
It sits at the top of the commonly reported band, usually reached by people moving into a scarcer skill and a higher-paying employer type at once. A like-for-like move between similar companies more commonly lands at 15% to 25%. These are advertised and survey-reported ranges, not guarantees.
How much hike should I ask for with 5 years of experience?
Do not compute it from your current CTC at all. Open ten current listings for the exact title and level you want, note the disclosed ranges, and ask for a figure inside that band. The 3 to 5 year segment sees some of the largest percentage movement in Indian tech, so the band you cite matters more than the percentage you ask for.
Am I too old to switch into an AI role at 35?
Age is rarely the blocker; an unexplained function change is. At 35 you carry domain knowledge a fresher cannot fake, and interviewers price that. You need one piece of verifiable recent work plus a coherent story linking your domain to the target role. Expect the search to run longer than it would at 27.
Should I accept a counteroffer from my current employer?
Only if what you wanted was scope and they have just put that scope in writing. If the counteroffer is cash alone, you have learned the money was always available and simply not offered, and you have told your manager you were interviewing. That changes how you get staffed.
Why did my appraisal give me only 8% when the market pays 25%?
The two numbers come from different budgets. Increments are a fixed percentage pool allocated across a whole band a year in advance; an external offer is a single-seat hiring budget defended by a manager who needs the role filled. Indeed's 2026 India findings show the consequence: 54% of AI-exposed employees reported flat or falling pay while 66% of employers pay premiums to hire AI talent.
