Career & Salary · 2026Service Based to Product Based Company in India 2026: A 9-Month Switch Plan and What It Actually Pays
Moving from a service based to product based company in India takes most working engineers six to twelve months of preparation, not a rewritten resume. You go deep in one stack, ship two things that run without you, and clear a coding and design loop. Naukri data for 2025-26 puts the average job-change hike near 35 to 40 percent.
- This is a proof problem, not a resume problem. Panels hire on 45 minutes of your code and 45 of your design.
- Advertised pay roughly doubles at 3 to 5 years. 2026 India salary guides put mid-level product pay around 12 to 25 LPA.
- Global capability centres are the widest door. Business Today reported in July 2026 that GCC hiring is on track for 510,452 roles across roughly 2,120 centres.
- The pay cut hides in the transition: buyout, lost variable pay and a vesting cliff can eat year one's gain.
- Certifications clear the screen, projects clear the loop. One without the other is how this stalls.
It is 11:40 on a Tuesday night and you are on a bridge call about a ticket that a 2019 shell script will close by itself in the morning. You are four years in, your appraisal letter said 7 percent, and someone from your batch just posted a Bengaluru product company offer. That gap is closeable, and further off than the post makes it look, because what stands in between is not motivation. It is evidence.
Is the Switch From a Service Based to Product Based Company Realistic for You?
Three things have to be true at once: 25 to 30 spare hours a month for nine months, eighteen months of work where you personally built or operated something, and a notice period you can survive.
The third sinks more attempts than the other two. Indian IT services employers commonly enforce 60 to 90 days of notice while product multinationals run 30 to 60, and that gap is where offers quietly die.
Who should not bother right now
If your whole experience is triage on someone else's runbook and you have never touched a repository other people merge into, a product loop will hurt and teach you nothing. Move internally to a build team first, even at flat pay.
Our running example: a 2021-batch engineer in Pune, four years on a managed services account for a European insurer, 8.2 LPA fixed, 90 day notice. Everything below is sized for them.
Three doors out of services, and what each one screens for
Prepare for the loop that matches the door you are actually knocking on.

Product Based Company Salary in India 2026: What the Listings Advertise
Product based company salary in India depends more on employer tier than on job title, so compare like with like. Advertised ranges are what employers publish to attract applicants, and the top of a band usually goes to someone already doing that job elsewhere.
| Experience | IT services, advertised (Rs LPA) | Product or GCC, advertised (Rs LPA) | What sits in the gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 years | 3.5 to 7 | 8 to 18 | The entry bar, not skill. Product intake is mostly campus. |
| 3 to 5 years | 6 to 12 | 12 to 25 | A service you own in production, and a coding loop you pass. |
| 6 to 9 years | 12 to 22 | 22 to 40 | Design judgement, incident history, one deep domain. |
| 10 years and above | 18 to 32 | 32 to 60 | Scope. Pay follows what you decide alone. |
Collection basis: advertised ranges compiled on 18 September 2026 from 2026 India salary guides by Instahyre, Recrew and OwnYourCareer, cross-read against open listings on Naukri and LinkedIn. These are advertised market ranges, not guarantees of what any individual will be offered, and equity is excluded.
GCC jobs in India 2026 are the widest door
Most GCC jobs in India 2026 are in-house engineering roles rather than vendor contracts. Business Today reported in July 2026 that GCC hiring in India is projected to reach 510,452 roles this year across roughly 2,120 centres, Bengaluru at a 30 percent share and tier-2 cities growing fastest at 23 percent. For a services engineer this is the softest landing: the interview weights operational judgement you already have, and the pay sits in product territory.
The hike number, and what it hides
Naukri's compensation data for 2025-26 puts the average job-change hike at roughly 35 to 40 percent against about 9.5 percent for an internal increment, while services employers ran 6 to 9 percent broad hikes in 2026. That spread is the whole economic case, and it is an average across every role and city, so treat it as weather, not a forecast.
The Skills Gap: What You Have vs What a Product Team Assumes
Services engineers underrate what they bring: production discipline, change habits and client communication half the product candidates lack. What you lack is depth in one stack and evidence you have built rather than maintained.
| What you already have | What a product team assumes | How to close it | Evidence that counts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ticket-driven fixes across many systems | You can own one service end to end | Rewrite one internal component's deploy and alerting | A runbook and dashboard backed by your commits |
| Scripting in bursts | Data structures under time pressure | 150 problems done properly, arrays to graphs, timed | Solutions you can narrate out loud |
| Cloud console exposure | Infrastructure as code and a cost model | Terraform plus one exam, SAA-C03 or AZ-305 | A repo that builds your environment from zero |
| SQL pulls for status decks | Pipelines that survive bad input | One batch pipeline with tests and backfill, as in DP-700 | A pipeline that reruns cleanly after you break it |
| Dashboards built on request | You define the metric, not just draw it | Model the data yourself, the PL-300 half | A model someone else can extend |
The Terraform and pipeline rows are the hard ones to self-teach, and are what 360DT's AWS Solutions Architect and DevOps course runs live on weekends.
The 9-Month Plan to Move From a Service Based to Product Based Company
This assumes you keep your job. Nobody should quit to prepare, and whoever says otherwise is not paying your EMI.
| Window | Focus | Hours | Deliverable you can show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Months 1 to 2 | One cloud, one language. Linux, networking, 40 problems. | 55 | Exam booked. A VPC and a hand-deployed service. |
| Month 3 | Infrastructure as code and CI/CD. Exam sat. | 28 | Terraform repo plus a pipeline that deploys on merge. |
| Months 4 to 5 | Project one: real service with auth, tests, monitoring. | 55 | Public repo, architecture diagram, live URL. |
| Month 6 | Data structures at interview pace. Two mocks. | 30 | 150 problems logged, two recorded mocks. |
| Months 7 to 8 | Project two in your domain. Design reading, outreach. | 55 | Second repo, three design docs, 20 referral chats. |
| Month 9 | Apply in batches of ten. Interview, take feedback, iterate. | 30 | Loops in flight, a defensible ask. |
Where 30 hours a month should actually go
Split across the first six months. The mistake is spending 70 percent on coursework.
Allocation based on interview weights reported in 2026 India hiring guides, checked 18 September 2026.
One opinion, stated plainly
Pick one cloud and stay there for all nine months. A profile listing AWS, Azure and GCP at surface level reads as someone who passed exams, and a panel finds the floor in four minutes. The trade-off is real: you will feel underqualified for half the listings you see. Take that cost, because depth survives round two. If your target is a Microsoft-heavy GCC, invert this, go AZ-305 and AZ-400, and ignore AWS until you are inside.
SAA-C03 costs 150 US dollars, which 2026 India pricing pages put at roughly Rs 15,100 once 18 percent GST is added at Pearson VUE. Budget that, not the sticker price. The certifications overview lists what each exam covers. Also read: SAA-C03 vs DOP-C02.
What You Earn During the Transition, and Where the Pay Cut Hides
In numbers. Your Pune engineer at 8.2 LPA fixed also carries about 0.8 LPA of variable that pays in June. Resign in March, and if the new employer will not wait 90 days you buy out 30 to 45 days of notice, roughly Rs 68,000 to Rs 1,02,000 out of pocket. The variable is gone, the new bonus is a year away, and stock carries a twelve month cliff.
Do that arithmetic before you celebrate. A 35 percent hike on fixed pay can still mean flat cash across twelve months. Usually still the right move, since year two starts from the new base, but know it going in.
When the recruiter asks for your current CTC, answer the other question: "My current fixed is 8.2. For this role I am looking at the band you have advertised, and I would want the offer to account for a 45 day buyout. Where does this position sit in that range?" You have named a number, tied it to their band, and put the buyout on the table before the offer is drafted.
- It runs long. Nine months is the plan. Twelve to eighteen is common when work gets busy.
- You take a title cut. A services Technical Lead often lands as a mid-level engineer. Pay rises while the title falls, and that stings.
- Some product jobs are worse. On-call at 3am, ship-or-go culture, layoff exposure services employers rarely have.
- Relieving letter risk. No clean full-and-final settlement can mean a failed background check years later.
The Interview Loop Product Companies Actually Run
Product loops in India typically run four to eight weeks from application to offer: an online assessment, one or two live coding rounds, a design round, a hiring manager conversation. Flipkart's published SDE process is the clearest public example, four to five rounds across 21 to 30 days, including a 90 minute machine coding round.
The advice to grind 500 problems is wrong for the lateral path. A hundred and fifty you can explain out loud, plus one repository written to machine-coding standards, beats 500 half-remembered submissions. Memorisation dies at the follow-up question.
Three resume lines you can adapt today
- Rebuilt deployment for a 14-service estate with Terraform and GitHub Actions, cutting release from four manual hours to a 20 minute pipeline.
- Owned the alerting rewrite after a P1 outage, cutting pages per week from 31 to 6 by replacing threshold alerts with symptom-based ones.
- Built a retrieval service over 40,000 documents with an evaluation harness and a documented cost per query.
Build that third line on purpose if you want an AI-adjacent team: Business Today reported 64 percent of new GCC roles as asking for AI, data or automation skills. That work is what 360DT's AI Engineer course builds live, with the operations side in the MLOps engineer course around AI-300. Also read: IT support to cloud engineer in India 2026.

Case Study: Nine Months From a Managed Services Account to a Bengaluru GCC
Illustrative composite built from typical market paths, not a real named individual.
Start. The Pune engineer, four years on an insurer's managed services account, 8.2 LPA fixed plus 0.8 variable, L2 incident work, no public code.
Months 1 to 3. Picks AWS and Python, books SAA-C03 for week 11 to force the pace, and passes at roughly Rs 15,100 with GST. Rebuilds the team's manual deployment as a Terraform repo on Saturdays, the first thing worth talking about in an interview.
Months 4 to 6. Ships a claims-document search service with auth, tests and a written cost per query. Hits the first wall: it works locally and falls over the moment two people use it. Three weeks lost, more learned than the exam taught. Starts timed problem solving in month 6, scores badly, keeps going.
Months 7 to 9. Second project in insurance claims, because domain familiarity is the one edge a services engineer holds over a product-side candidate. Twenty referral conversations produce four screens and two loops. One fails on system design, the other clears.
Destination. Platform engineer at a Bengaluru GCC, offer inside the 14 to 19 LPA band comparable roles advertise. A 45 day buyout, reimbursed after joining. First-year cash rose far less than the headline, and year two was not close. The path matters more than the ending: one concurrency bug that cost three weeks, one failed loop, one month where a release cycle ate every weekend.
What Usually Goes Wrong Here
Four ways this switch stalls
All four are avoidable, and none of them is about intelligence.
Collecting certificates instead of shipping
Three certifications and zero repositories is the most common stalled profile. Exams prove you studied. Only code answers what a panel asks.
Ship firstApplying six months too early
You burn referrals on loops you cannot pass yet, and most companies then apply a six to twelve month cooling-off period.
TimingMistaking a product-shaped title for product work
Plenty of roles advertised as product engineering are staffing contracts inside a product company. Ask whose repository you commit to.
Due diligenceOptimising the offer instead of the next role
The highest offer is sometimes a support function in disguise. Two years there and you are back here, better paid, same problem.

Now the one a colleague would warn you about over a desk. Around month five an internal offer arrives: small hike, new account, maybe a title bump, landing exactly when preparation feels hardest. Take it if the new work involves building. Turn it down if it is the same work with a different client logo. The second attempt is much harder to start.

Frequently asked questions
Is moving from a service based to product based company worth it in 2026?
For most people the spread justifies it: Naukri's 2025-26 data puts the average job-change hike near 35 to 40 percent against roughly 9.5 percent for an internal increment. The trade is harder work, on-call exposure and less security.
How long does it take to switch from a service based to product based company?
Budget nine months at 25 to 30 hours a month while working full time, twelve to eighteen if release cycles are heavy. The interview pipeline and notice period add three to five months on top.
Do I need to clear DSA rounds to get into a product based company in India?
For product engineering roles, yes. Data structures rounds are still standard in 2026, usually one or two problems in 45 minutes on a shared editor. Platform and SRE roles inside GCCs weight scripting and troubleshooting instead.
Am I too old to move to a product based company at 35?
No, but the route changes. With ten-plus years you will not beat a 26 year old on coding speed, so compete on domain depth, design judgement and incident history, and target platform or lead roles.
Will I have to take a pay cut to switch from service to product?
Rarely on fixed pay, often on first-year cash. Buyout, forfeited variable and a stock cliff absorb much of the headline increase. Model twelve months of cash, not the CTC.
Are GCC jobs in India 2026 the same as product based company jobs?
Close enough in pay and work. A global capability centre is the in-house engineering arm of a global firm, so you own systems rather than bill hours, and Business Today reported 2026 GCC hiring on track for 510,452 roles.
