Certification vs projects is a sequencing question, not a choice. A certification clears the resume filter that service firms and GCC recruiters apply first; two deep projects win the interview that follows. With PL-300 priced at ₹4,865 an attempt, most Indian switchers should certify once, then build twice.
- Diagnose before you spend. No calls means a filter problem, and a certification fixes that fastest. Calls that die in round two mean a proof problem, and only projects fix those.

You have finished three courses, you hold four certificates as PDFs, and your profile was viewed eleven times last month with zero calls. Or the mirror image: the calls come, you talk well for twenty minutes, then someone asks what you actually built and the room goes quiet. Two different diseases, and people keep treating both with the same medicine.
Certification vs Projects: What Each One Actually Buys You
Hiring for an entry or switcher-level data, cloud or AI role in India runs through three gates: a keyword screen done by an ATS or a recruiter with a checklist, a screening call, then a technical round where you explain something you made.
A certification is a gate-one instrument. A third party asserts, in a form a non-technical recruiter verifies in ten seconds, that you know a named platform's vocabulary. That matters when 300 CVs are queued and the brief says "PL-300 or equivalent preferred". It does almost nothing at gate three, because nobody interrogates a badge. A project is the opposite. It hands the interviewer something to attack: why a star schema and not one flat table, why you cached that API response, what broke when the source file changed its column order. At gate one it does little, because the ATS cannot read your GitHub.
So the usual framing is wrong. The question is not which is better, but which gate you are failing.

Read the failure-mode row twice. A dump-passed exam and a tutorial-cloned project are the same mistake in different clothes: both optimise for the artefact instead of the ability.

Certification Cost in India in 2026: What You Will Actually Pay
Fees are the one part of this decision with hard published numbers, so use them. Checked on 25 September 2026: Microsoft's India certification page lists PL-300 at ₹4,865 against $165 in the US, and DP-700, the Fabric exam behind any live Microsoft Fabric data engineering program, carries the same $165 base. AWS publishes SAA-C03 at $150 an attempt, though with 18% GST at checkout Indian candidates report paying $165 to $185. Anthropic's exams run $99 for CCAO-F, $125 for CCDV-F and CCAR-F, and $175 for CCAR-P.

Two rules people learn expensively. Every fee is per attempt, and Microsoft's retake policy makes a second failure slow as well as costly: 24 hours after a first fail, 14 days between later attempts, and five sittings maximum in the 12 months from your first try. The renewal trap nobody costs in
Microsoft's renewal assessment is free, unproctored and sits on Microsoft Learn, with the window opening six months before expiry. Generous, until you notice there is no grace period: miss it and the only way back is the full paid exam. So a Microsoft certification is a ₹4,865 purchase plus a short annual chore for as long as you want it on your CV. AWS went the other way, opening a Skill Builder maintenance path in beta on 23 June 2026 that extends an active certification by a year without a full exam.

Are Certifications Worth It in 2026? The Honest Answer by Reader Type
Ask whether certifications are worth it in 2026 and the honest answer splits by reader type. Here is the caveat this article owes you, because it cuts against what we sell.
If you already have two or more years of demonstrable experience and you are getting interviews, a fresh associate-level certification will not move your offer by a rupee. Product-company hiring managers treat associate badges as neutral information, and the people insisting every engineer needs three certifications are usually selling certifications. Indian recruiters are consistent on this once you read past the headline: certifications carry weight at screening, especially in the large service firms, while hiring managers trust what you have built.
The picture inverts when your CV carries nothing a screener recognises. A 2021 B.Com graduate doing MIS reporting in Excel has zero keyword overlap with a data analyst job description, and "proficient in data analysis" does not fix it. The exam code does. That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth ₹4,865.
- Situation. Twenty-six, B.Com 2021, three years of monthly sales decks in Excel at an auto components firm, around ₹4.5 LPA. Thirty spare hours a month, ₹15,000 budget.
- Symptom. Fifty-two applications in six weeks, two recruiter calls, both for the MIS role she already does.
- Diagnosis. Filter problem. Her CV says MIS; the jobs say PL-300, DAX, star schema.
- Call. PL-300 first, the cheapest thing that changes her screen outcome, then one sales-analytics project on domain knowledge she already has.

How Many Data Analyst Portfolio Projects Do You Actually Need?
Two. Not six, and not one. One can be luck or a followed tutorial; the second proves it was not. Past two the returns fall away sharply, because every extra repository dilutes the two you want read. What separates a data analyst portfolio project that earns a follow-up question from one that gets skipped:
- The input is genuinely messy. Scraped listings, a government CSV with merged header rows, an API that rate limits you. A clean Kaggle file skips the part of the job you are hired for.
- The README names a decision you rejected. Two lines on why you avoided a snowflake schema tell a reviewer more than 200 lines of tidy code.
- There is a link that works. A published Power BI report, a Streamlit app, or a two minute screen recording. If it needs a clone and a pip install, most people will not look.
- One number sits in the title. "Cut refresh time from 40 minutes to 90 seconds" is a project; "Sales dashboard" is homework. It should answer a question someone would pay to have answered.

Certification first if
- Your call-back rate sits under 5% across 40 or more applications.
- You are switching domains and your title shares no vocabulary with the target one.
- You are aiming at service companies or GCCs, where badges map to internal bands.
- You need an external deadline to stop drifting between half-finished courses.
Projects first if
- You already get calls and lose the technical round.
- You are targeting startups and product firms, where a GitHub link carries further.
- You hold a relevant degree or two years of adjacent work, so the keyword gap is closed.
- Your target stack has no respected exam. Agent frameworks and most open-source data tooling sit here.
Notice the fourth item in that second list. Whole categories of in-demand work have no certification worth taking: no exam for LangGraph, no badge for a retrieval pipeline that survives real documents. There the project is not the better option, it is the only one. The nearest credentialed equivalents, such as the Claude developer track or AB-900 for Copilot and agent administration, assess platform governance rather than your ability to build.

The Order That Works: 12 Weeks, One Exam, Two Builds
Sequencing matters more than the choice. With a filter problem, do the exam first: it is the shorter loop, and it starts changing your call rate while you are still building. Run project one in parallel, not after, so the exam content lands somewhere.

Pick one role and one exam
Read fifteen live job descriptions and count which exam code and which three tools repeat. Deliverable: an exam booked with a date, which is what stops the drift.
Work the objectives, build project one alongside
Take the published objective domains in order, applying each to your own dataset the same week, then close with two timed practice tests and repair only the domains under 70%. Deliverable: a working report covering half the exam scope and two practice scores above passing.
Sit the exam, update everything that day
Credential link on LinkedIn, Naukri and the top line of the CV. Deliverable: the exam code as literal text in three places a screener reads.
Project two, the deliberately messy one
Choose a source that will break: a rate-limited API, a PDF, a file whose schema shifts. Deliverable: a repo whose README names two rejected options.
Package the proof, then apply narrow
One page per project, a working link, a two minute recording, a CV where every bullet carries a number. Deliverable: fifteen targeted applications, not 150 identical ones.
Timings assume roughly 8 to 10 study hours a week alongside a full-time job.
What usually goes wrong here
- Collecting cheap badges. Four fundamentals certificates in a month says you like starting things. One associate exam says you finish them.
- Passing with dumps. It works on the exam and fails in the room, costing you the role you spent three months getting called for.
- Letting a Microsoft certification lapse. Renewal is free and there is no grace period. Set a month-ten reminder today.
- Starting project two before finishing project one. An unfinished project cannot be interviewed.
- Waiting to be ready. Applying at week eight with one credential and one build gets better feedback than a perfect portfolio at week thirty.
The fourth does the most quiet damage. You get 80% through a build, the last 20% is the unglamorous part, a cleaner idea appears, and you restart. Six months later: five repositories, nothing to show. When you feel that pull, ship the ugly version, write the README, then start the next one.
The Verdict: Which One to Pick in 2026
If you are switching into data, cloud or AI in India and applications are not converting into calls, take one associate-level certification matching the exact code in your target job descriptions, inside eight weeks. PL-300 for analyst roles, DP-700 for Fabric engineering, SAA-C03 or AZ-305 for cloud. Roughly ₹5,000 and a fixed deadline, and the cheapest change available to your call rate. The trade-off is real: it buys attention, not credibility, and stopping there loses you the technical round.
If calls already come, skip the exam this quarter and build two projects with messy inputs and working links. A second badge will not move you; a build you can defend for 20 minutes will.
Most people are in the middle, and for them the answer is the sequence: exam by week seven, two projects by week eleven, applications from week twelve.
