AI Engineer Jobs in New York 2026: Pay Bands, Who Is Hiring and the H-1B Reality
AI engineer jobs in New York pay a city average of $223,464 according to Built In NYC, with the middle of the market between $141,357 and $235,273. Glassdoor listed 897 AI engineer openings in New York in August 2026, clustered in banking, health tech and the new Hudson Square AI offices rather than in research labs.
- The volume sits in finance, not labs. Glassdoor showed 897 AI engineer and 3,042 machine learning openings in New York in 2026.
- Pay transparency is your research tool. Goldman Sachs lists $150,000 to $300,000 base for Senior AI/ML Engineer here.
- Hudson Square is the new centre. Anthropic took all 16 floors of 330 Hudson Street, expecting 1,000+ local staff by end of 2026.
- H-1B has closed for juniors. DHS recorded 85 petitions under the $100,000 fee to mid-February 2026, an 87% drop.
- One artefact beats five certificates. Loops here screen on retrieval quality, agent design and evaluation numbers.
You take the E train to a loop in Midtown, and the panel spends fifty minutes on one question: why does your pipeline return the wrong clause from a credit agreement 8% of the time, and how would you know if that got worse. Nobody asks about attention.

Why New York Became a Real AI Engineering City in 2026
For a decade the honest answer to "should I do AI in New York" was no, go west. The customers moved first. Banks, insurers, hospital systems, law firms and media companies sit within four subway stops of each other in Manhattan, and each now has a budget line for putting a model in front of its own documents.
The labs followed. In July 2026 Anthropic leased the entire 16-floor building at 330 Hudson Street in Hudson Square, fitted for roughly 1,700 desks, planning to double local headcount past 1,000 by year end. OpenAI took about 90,000 square feet at the Puck Building in SoHo, and Marketplace reported Palantir and EliseAI hunting more space.
So New York barely hires people to train frontier models. It hires heavily to make them behave on a regulated company's data.
AI Engineer Jobs in New York: Which Roles Are Actually Open
The title covers three distinct jobs, and one resume for all three is why candidates get silence.
Applied AI engineer, enterprise. The dominant flavour: retrieval over the company's corpus, tools wired to internal APIs, the harness proving it survives a model upgrade. That is what 360DT's AI Engineer course is built around.
Forward deployed engineer. Half engineer, half consultant, in the client's Jersey City office on a Tuesday making the deployment land. New York's density of enterprise buyers makes it one of the best cities anywhere for this, and the FDE course maps the shape.
Machine Learning Engineer Jobs in New York Still Outnumber the New Title
Glassdoor showed 3,042 machine learning postings in New York in September 2026 against 897 for the AI engineer title, so the classical work on fraud models, ad ranking and insurance pricing has not gone anywhere. Those roles skew on-site.
- You apply to the labs only. Anthropic and OpenAI postings draw thousands. The Midtown insurer that needs claims retrieval gets forty, and pays close once bonus counts.
- Your portfolio is a chatbot. Almost nobody brings an evaluation report showing recall at five before and after a reranker.
- You ignore the compliance half. Here the project dies at model risk review, not code review. Candidates who can discuss audit logs and sign-off skip a round.
AI Engineer Salary in New York City 2026: What the Postings Say
Sources disagree wildly. Built In NYC reports a city average of $223,464 from funded tech firms that disclose full packages; ZipRecruiter reported $112,172 in September 2026, because its pool includes contract work. Use the spread: Built In put the 25th to 75th percentile at $141,357 to $235,273.

Base only. Bonus and equity excluded, which is where banks close the gap.

The bank figure is total compensation, and the same source shows that JPMorgan role spanning $194,000 to $545,000. Base is the wrong target anyway: $185,000 with a 10% bonus loses to $170,000 at a bank paying 30%.
| Role in New York | Typical advertised band | Who posts it | What they screen hardest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applied AI Engineer | $150,000–$225,000 base | Goldman Sachs, EliseAI, health and legal tech | Retrieval quality, tool design, evals |
| Senior AI/ML Engineer | $150,000–$300,000 base | Goldman Sachs Global Banking & Markets | Production ownership, model risk docs |
| Forward Deployed Engineer | $175,000–$250,000 posted range | Palantir, AI labs, enterprise AI startups | Client-facing judgement plus coding |
Which Companies Hire AI Engineers in New York
The labs. As of September 2026 both Anthropic and OpenAI list New York openings, and both screen on systems depth, not prompt craft.
Banks and insurers, where the headcount is. JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and the large insurers are the volume employers, and their 2026 postings name retrieval, agent orchestration and evaluation explicitly. The work is document-heavy: credit memos, KYC files, claims notes, policy wordings. It is also the likeliest place to hire someone with six years of Java and no AI title, because they need the domain knowledge, a switch our Java to AI engineer guide maps.
Enterprise and health tech. 50 Hudson Yards houses BlackRock, Meta Platforms, ServiceNow, Truist and XTX Markets: five hiring cultures in one lobby, and a building where Microsoft-stack credentials carry weight, which is why the Azure Solutions Architect and DevOps course and the Copilot Administrator course show up on resumes here. Built In NYC also names Healthee, Teragonia, Tempus AI and Attio among firms hiring; health tech has shorter loops than a bank.
Where the Work Sits: Hudson Square, Hudson Yards, Midtown
Which cluster you target changes your commute by forty minutes a day: Hudson Square and SoHo for the labs, Hudson Yards for enterprise tech, Midtown and the Financial District for banks. And much bank AI work is physically in Jersey City, which nobody puts in the job title.
Skills and Certifications New York Employers Screen For
The opinionated part: on limited time, skip the deep-learning-from-scratch course. Nobody in a Midtown loop asks you to derive backpropagation. They ask, inside twenty minutes, how you chunked a 90-page contract, why that size, and how you measured whether it beat the last one. You will be weaker at a trading firm for it. For the 897 openings here, take that trade.
| What New York postings ask for | Why it appears | Where to build it |
|---|---|---|
| Retrieval, agent tools and evaluation harnesses | 2026 postings name agents, not chatbots | AI Engineer course, CCDV-F prep, and how RAG works |
| Cloud and serving, one stack deep | Bank platforms are AWS or Azure, rarely both | AWS SAA-C03 course or the MLOps AI-300 course |
| Architecture and governance vocabulary | Model risk review is a real gate here | CCAR-F Architect Foundations prep |
| SQL and warehouse fluency | Half of "AI" work is joining tables correctly | Microsoft Fabric course (DP-700), or Power BI and PL-300 |
The honest caveat
Certifications will not get you hired here. They clear a bank's resume screen and stop you learning in circles, which is worth something. But a hiring manager in Hudson Square reads your certificate for two seconds and your GitHub for ten minutes, so ship the project instead of sitting one more exam. The certifications overview shows what each tests.
The H-1B Reality for AI Engineer Jobs in New York
Most city guides skip this, and it decides whether the rest applies to you. A proclamation signed on 24 October 2025 attached a $100,000 fee to new H-1B petitions filed after 21 September. DHS then recorded 85 petitions subject to that fee up to 15 February 2026, an 87% drop in fee-liable applications, and more than 60% of H-1B workers historically sit in computer occupations.
Read it as a filter, not a wall. A firm will pay $100,000 on top of a $250,000 senior hire it cannot replace domestically. Not for a new graduate. Sponsorship here survives at the senior end and is closed at entry level.
Three routes into New York AI work, by status
Pick your lane first, because each needs a different resume.

Tech Jobs in New York 2026 Without US Work Authorisation
Two real paths, plus the fantasy of a startup sponsoring you cold off LinkedIn. The first is the remote slice: 28% of New York AI engineer listings were advertised remote in ZipRecruiter's September 2026 breakdown, some of which will take a contractor abroad through an employer of record, at a discount to the New York band.
The second is underrated. Those same employers staff retrieval and platform work out of Bengaluru and Hyderabad against broadly the same bar, and two or three years there with a visible track record turns an internal transfer into a real conversation. Our guide to AI engineer jobs in London covers a market where the visa route costs less.
Build the retrieval, agent and evaluation work New York actually interviews on
The AI Engineer course runs 100+ hours live over 16 weeks and certifies you on both Microsoft Copilot Studio and Claude Code, the two stacks New York postings keep naming. Classes are Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 11 PM IST, which is 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM in New York, and fees are charged in Indian rupees.

Breaking In: A 90-Day Plan and What It Costs to Live Here
A plan without a person in it is useless, so picture one: a developer writing Java at a mid-size insurer in Jersey City since 2019, who knows claims cold, has never shipped anything with a model, and has eight hours a week. Illustrative, not a real 360DT student.
Weeks one to four: build one thing, not five. Retrieval over 200 public policy wordings, chunked two ways, recall at five measured for both. The deliverable is a two-page report with two numbers in it, already more interesting than the resume. Weeks five to eight: add a reranker, a tool-calling agent that pulls a claim record and answers a coverage question, and the harness that catches a model upgrade degrading the answer. 360DT's Generative AI Developer course runs this as live lab work.
Weeks nine to twelve: apply internally first, because the insurer already runs an AI programme and trusts this person with claims. In parallel, eight applications to postings whose bands you can read off the page, plus rehearsal with our AI engineer interview questions. Not in those ninety days: a Kaggle competition, a second certification, a portfolio rewrite.
Cost of Living Against a New York AI Salary
A $150,000 base here is a good salary and a mediocre lifestyle, and both are true. Between federal, state and city tax plus Manhattan rent, a single person there is comfortable and not much more. The same $150,000 in Jersey City changes the arithmetic, because New Jersey levies no city income tax. A $185,000 Hudson Yards offer at 60 minutes door-to-door and a $165,000 Jersey City offer at 20 are closer than they look.

Frequently asked questions
How much do AI engineer jobs in New York pay in 2026?
Built In NYC reports a city average of $223,464, with the 25th to 75th percentile at $141,357 to $235,273. Live postings are narrower: Goldman Sachs New York lists $150,000 to $225,000 base for Applied AI Engineer and $150,000 to $300,000 for Senior AI/ML Engineer.
How many AI engineer openings are there in New York right now?
Glassdoor listed 897 under the exact AI engineer title in August 2026 and 3,042 under the broader machine learning search, so searching only the newer title hides two thirds of the market.
Which companies are hiring AI engineers in New York in 2026?
As of September 2026 Anthropic lists New York openings after leasing all 16 floors of 330 Hudson Street, and OpenAI holds about 90,000 square feet at the Puck Building. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase post continuously, and Built In NYC names Healthee, Tempus AI, Smartly and Attio.
Can an Indian engineer get H-1B sponsorship for an AI job in New York?
Realistically only at the senior end. DHS recorded 85 petitions liable for the $100,000 fee to 15 February 2026, an 87% drop. Employers absorb that for a senior hire they cannot replace, not an entry-level one. Early career, look at the 28% of listings advertised remote.
Is Hudson Square or Hudson Yards better for AI jobs in New York?
They hire different people. Hudson Square and SoHo is the lab cluster: smaller teams, harder systems interviews, more equity. Hudson Yards, with BlackRock, Meta, ServiceNow and XTX Markets at number 50, is enterprise tech and finance: formal loops, bigger cash bands.
Can I attend 360DT live classes from New York?
Yes. All 360DT courses are live online from India, Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 11 PM IST, which is 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM in New York during Eastern Daylight Time. Fees are in Indian rupees; the AI Engineer course is Rs 27,999. 360DT has no classroom in New York.
What I Would Do in Your Position
With the right to work here, skip the labs this month and hit the banks and health tech firms, where the openings-to-applicants ratio is better by an order of magnitude. On OPT, optimise for the company that will still want you in twenty-four months. And if New York is a target rather than an address, build the portfolio this market screens for, join that employer's Indian office, and push for the transfer from inside.
All three need the same artefact: one retrieval-and-agent system with an evaluation report attached. That is what 360DT's AI Engineer course spends its 100+ hours building, live over 16 weeks, and it is the step I would take next. To see the teaching first, sit in on a free webinar.
