Tech Jobs in Seattle 2026: Pay Bands, the Bellevue Shift and Who Is Hiring
Tech jobs in Seattle still pay near the top of the US market, with Glassdoor showing a $193,598 average for cloud engineers and 692 AI engineer openings listed in September 2026. But the hiring has moved east to Bellevue and Redmond, and the growth now sits in AI, cloud and data roles rather than general software engineering.
- Seattle is still the No. 2 tech talent market in North America on the ranking GeekWire tracked in 2026, but the same report flagged the highest office vacancy of the 50 markets it measured.
- The region lost close to 7,000 jobs in 2025, the first time in two decades outside a recession or the pandemic that Puget Sound employment growth trailed the national rate.
- Cloud pay is the headline number. Glassdoor puts the Seattle cloud engineer average at $193,598, with the 90th percentile at $286,765.
- Amazon’s Seattle headcount has fallen from roughly 60,000 in 2020 to under 50,000, while Bellevue and Redmond keep absorbing engineering teams.
- The 2 Line opened fully on 28 March 2026, which means a Seattle apartment and a Redmond job are now one train ride apart for the first time.
- Washington charges no state income tax, worth roughly $16,200 a year at a $200,000 salary compared with California.
- The $100,000 H-1B fee has rewritten the entry route. Amazon and Microsoft have shifted toward candidates already inside the US, which makes OPT and internal transfers the realistic doors.
You take the recruiter call, the number is enormous, and then you open a rental listing for a one-bedroom four blocks from the office and the number stops feeling enormous. That is the Seattle conversation in 2026, and it has a second half that nobody mentioned three years ago: the job that pays that number may not be in Seattle at all. It may be in Bellevue, or in Redmond, or in an office on the BelRed corridor that did not exist when you last looked.
Why Seattle Tech Hiring Looks Different in 2026
Seattle has spent fifteen years as the city you moved to when the Bay Area got too expensive. That pitch is still mostly true, and it is now also incomplete.
In 2026 a coalition of leaders across four Puget Sound counties launched the Partnership for a Competitive Puget Sound, a 20-point plan written in response to the region losing nearly 7,000 jobs in 2025. The report’s central complaint is structural rather than cyclical: tech accounts for close to one in ten regional jobs and about 24% of total payroll, yet it has no coordinated regional strategy, while aerospace does. Microsoft vice chair Brad Smith put it bluntly in the coverage, comparing the moment to Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh a century ago. The same report flagged two numbers worth writing down: Seattle’s office vacancy rate is the highest of the 50 markets ranked, and the city’s population of people in their twenties shrank between 2019 and 2024.
None of that means Seattle is finished. It kept its No. 2 spot in the talent ranking. What it means is that the city no longer carries you. In 2019 a competent generalist backend engineer could land in Seattle and be fine. In 2026 you need a specific reason someone hires you here instead of in Austin, Toronto or a remote seat in Bengaluru, and that reason is almost always a named stack: inference infrastructure, agent orchestration, data platform, Kubernetes at scale.
The honest caveat
If you are a mid-level generalist with no cloud or AI depth and no US work authorisation, Seattle in late 2026 is a bad bet. Tech made up a record 31% of all US job cuts through June, and Seattle absorbed a disproportionate share of that. Starbucks alone filed to cut 61 tech roles at its Seattle headquarters this year. The market is strong for a narrow band of skills and genuinely difficult outside it. Pretending otherwise would waste a year of your life.
Which Roles Are Hiring, and Which Tech Companies Hiring in Seattle Post Them
The job boards tell a consistent story when you read them by role rather than by headline count. Glassdoor listed 6,322 tech jobs in Seattle in September 2026. Underneath that, the distribution is lopsided toward infrastructure and AI.
| Role | Seattle openings (Glassdoor) | Employers posting locally | What gets you shortlisted |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI / ML engineer | 692 AI engineer roles, 1,403 across all AI titles | Microsoft (Redmond), Amazon, Apple, TikTok, plus Built In Seattle startups | Shipped retrieval or agent system, eval harness, latency and cost numbers |
| Cloud engineer | 824 cloud computing roles, 392 naming GCP specifically | AWS (Bellevue engineering org), Microsoft, Deloitte, Zscaler | Terraform, Kubernetes, a live production incident you can narrate |
| Data engineer | 277 big data, 208 senior data engineer | Expedia Group, Tableau, Zillow, Nordstrom technology | Spark or Fabric pipeline, dbt tests, cost-per-query awareness |
| Software engineer (general) | Largest absolute pool, thinnest conversion | Expedia Group listed 182 software engineering roles in Seattle; Tableau listed 44 | Depth in one domain, not breadth across five |
Two names on that table deserve a note. AWS is building out its Bellevue engineering organisation rather than its Seattle one, which matters if you are picking a neighbourhood. And Zscaler opened an expanded Bellevue workspace as a Pacific Northwest engineering hub, which is the pattern in miniature: a security or infrastructure company arrives in the region and signs on the Eastside.

Tech Jobs in Seattle 2026: Pay Bands by Role and Experience
Seattle pay is quoted two ways and the gap between them causes most of the confusion. Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter measure different populations, so compare rows within one source and never across two.
Advertised and reported pay for Seattle tech roles
Cloud infrastructure, not AI job titles, currently carries the highest reported average in the city.
Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter Seattle figures, checked 2 October 2026. Advertised market ranges, not guarantees.
That last row is the one people misread. A $115,862 average for an AI engineer looks low next to a $193,598 cloud average, and it is not because AI pays less in Seattle. ZipRecruiter’s AI engineer sample skews toward base salary and toward contract postings, 25% of which are contract by its own breakdown. Senior AI listings in the same market advertise $170,000 to $210,000, and specialised ML platform roles advertise $245,000 to $345,000. The spread inside the AI title is wider than the spread between titles.
| Experience | Typical advertised band (Seattle, USD) | What the band assumes | Where candidates stall |
|---|---|---|---|
| New graduate | $170,000 to $230,000 total comp at large employers | Strong internship, CS or adjacent degree, often an OPT clock running | No shipped project outside coursework |
| 2 to 4 years | $120,000 to $160,000 base, bonus and stock on top | One production system you owned, not contributed to | Breadth across frameworks with no depth anywhere |
| 5 to 8 years | $160,000 to $240,000 base | Design ownership, on-call history, cost or latency wins you can quantify | Never moved from building features to building platform |
| 9 years and up | $240,000 to $345,000 for staff and platform roles | Cross-team influence, hiring, an architecture you can defend under pressure | Title inflation with no scope behind it |
Industry reports suggest these bands have flattened in the middle since 2024 while the top has held. The practical read: the jump from four years to eight years of experience pays much better in Seattle than the jump from one to four.
The Bellevue Shift: Where Seattle Tech Work Actually Happens Now
South Lake Union is the neighbourhood everyone pictures, and it is the one that has changed most. Amazon turned it from warehouses and surface parking into a corridor of glass, anchored by Day 1 and the Spheres. In September 2026 Amazon was reported to be letting a lease lapse on an 87,000 square foot South Lake Union building, with city office vacancy at 36.5%. Amazon’s Seattle headcount is under 50,000, down from roughly 60,000 in 2020.
Meanwhile Microsoft never left Redmond. It considered South Lake Union years ago, chose to expand on its own campus instead, and that decision now shapes where the region’s engineering jobs sit.
- The full 2 Line opened on 28 March 2026, running 14 miles from downtown Seattle to Overlake in Redmond with 10 stations, including South Bellevue, Downtown Bellevue, BelRed and Mercer Island.
- Sound Transit projects 43,000 to 52,000 daily riders on the integrated line in 2026.
- What this means for you: you can now live in a cheaper Seattle neighbourhood and work a Redmond or Bellevue job without owning a car, which was not practical before this March.
If you are choosing where to sign a lease, the useful question is no longer “Seattle or Eastside”. It is which 2 Line station you want to be near. Downtown Bellevue and the Spring District put you inside walking distance of Amazon, Microsoft and Meta Eastside offices. A nice one-bedroom in South Lake Union runs $2,800 to $3,500 in 2026, which is well above the citywide average, and you are paying that premium for proximity to an employer that is shrinking its footprint there.
Skills and Certifications Seattle Employers Ask For
Seattle job descriptions are unusually specific, because the two companies that wrote the cloud market are headquartered here and their vocabulary leaks into every other posting in the region. A Bellevue recruiter will name AZ-305 or SAA-C03 directly where a recruiter elsewhere writes “cloud experience”. The same is true on the generative AI side, where postings cite AI-103 by number, which is the exam the Generative AI Developer course prepares you for.
| What Seattle postings ask for | Why it appears here specifically | Where to build it |
|---|---|---|
| AWS architecture and DevOps (SAA-C03, DOP-C02) | AWS engineering is growing in Bellevue; its vendors and partners hire to match | 360DT’s AWS Solutions Architect and DevOps course, 80+ hrs live over 12 weeks |
| Azure architecture (AZ-305, AZ-400) | Redmond gravity: Microsoft and its partner ecosystem dominate Eastside postings | a live Azure architecture and DevOps program |
| RAG, agent orchestration, evals | The 692 AI engineer postings almost all want a system, not a notebook | the AI Engineer course, 100+ hrs live over 16 weeks |
| Microsoft Fabric and DP-700 | Fabric is the default data platform across Microsoft’s regional partner network | a live Microsoft Fabric data engineering program |
| Power BI and PL-300 | Analyst roles at Expedia, Nordstrom and Zillow sit on Microsoft reporting stacks | the Data Analyst course covering Excel, SQL, Python and Power BI |
| Model deployment and monitoring (AI-300) | Seattle hires MLOps separately from research, unlike smaller markets | 360DT’s MLOps Engineer course |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot administration (AB-900) | Every Redmond-adjacent enterprise is rolling out Copilot and nobody owns it yet | the Copilot and Agent Administrator course |
Which of these I would actually pick
If you can only do one thing in the next six months, do the AI engineering track and skip the second cloud certification. Here is the trade-off I am accepting by saying that: you will be weaker on paper for pure infrastructure roles, where SAA-C03 or AZ-305 is a literal screening filter. I still think it is right, because Seattle has thousands of people who hold a cloud associate certificate and comparatively few who have shipped an agent with an eval suite and a cost ceiling. Scarcity is the whole game.
The certification I would not buy yet is a second vendor’s associate cloud cert. Two associate-level badges from two clouds reads as indecision. One cloud deep, plus demonstrable AI engineering, reads as a hire. If you want to test the format before committing, 360DT runs free webinars on the same material. If you want the full map of what is worth sitting for, the certifications overview lays out the exams by role.
Cost of Living vs Tech Salary in Seattle
Take an illustrative case and keep it in mind for the rest of this guide. Call her Anita: a composite, not a real student, six years into backend work at a mid-size insurance company, currently in Bellevue on an H-1B, with roughly 30 spare hours a month. She earns $148,000. The question she is actually asking is not “what do tech jobs in Seattle pay”. It is whether moving to a $175,000 AI engineering role is worth retraining for when her rent is already $2,878.

The citywide average sits close to a one-bedroom, which tells you how much of the stock is small.

Seattle openings by role title
AI titles outnumber every infrastructure title, which is the opposite of two years ago.
Glassdoor Seattle listing counts, each as of the month shown, checked 2 October 2026.
Living costs for one person run around $4,015 a month on housing, food and transport, and Seattle sits about 45% above the US national average. Against that, Washington levies no state income tax. A worker on $200,000 keeps roughly $16,200 a year that California would have taken, rising to about $26,760 at $300,000. For Anita that offset is real money, and it is the single strongest argument for staying in the region rather than chasing a nominally higher Bay Area number.
Run her arithmetic honestly, though. A move from $148,000 to $175,000 is about $2,250 a month gross. One month of the 2-bedroom rent. The retraining only pays if it also moves her into the band above, which is where the $240,000-plus platform roles sit, and that is a two-step journey rather than one.
Build the agent and RAG systems that Seattle’s 692 AI engineer postings are asking for
The AI Engineer course is certified on both Microsoft Copilot Studio and Claude Code, the two stacks Redmond-area postings actually name, and it teaches agents that plan, use tools and act rather than chat. For Seattle that live slot lands Saturday and Sunday mornings, 7:30 to 10:30 AM Pacific while daylight saving holds and 6:30 to 9:30 AM once the clocks change in November; pricing is in Indian rupees.

How to Get Tech Jobs in Seattle From Outside the US
The route changed on 21 September 2025, when a $100,000 annual H-1B fee took effect. Amazon was the single largest H-1B recipient in 2024 and again this year with more than 10,000 approvals, followed by Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Apple and Google. Reporting through 2026 shows Amazon, Microsoft and Google responding not by paying the fee but by steering recruiting toward people already in the country, where several filing types do not trigger the charge, and leaning harder on Optional Practical Training so a STEM graduate can work for three years before any H-1B question arises.
Read that as a sequencing instruction rather than a closed door. The three doors that still open in Seattle, in order of realism:
- Applying cold from outside the US to a direct H-1B sponsorship. In 2026 this is the lowest-probability path and it will eat your year. Recruiters at the large employers are filtering for existing status before they read your projects.
- Treating an India-based GCC role as a dead end. Microsoft, Amazon and Expedia all run large India engineering centres. An internal transfer after two strong years is a far shorter path to Redmond than a cold application, and it is how a meaningful share of Eastside engineers actually arrived.
- Choosing a master’s programme by ranking rather than by OPT outcome. The degree is the visa mechanism here, so the only numbers that matter are placement into Pacific Northwest employers and whether the programme supports a STEM OPT extension.
- Letting your portfolio be coursework. A Seattle screen wants a system with a latency number, a cost number and a failure you fixed. Build it before you apply, not after.
On that last point, this is where a live cohort does more than a video course, because the thing you are missing is review rather than content. 360DT’s CCDV-F prep course and the AI engineering track both run as live weekend sessions where you build and get critiqued, which is the part you cannot get from documentation. All classes are live online from India; 360DT has no Seattle campus.

Your First 90 Days: A Seattle-Specific Plan
This is the plan I would hand Anita, built around 30 hours a month and the actual shape of the local market.
90 days from backend developer to credible Seattle AI engineering candidate
Each block ends in something a Bellevue hiring manager can open in a browser.
Pick your one cloud and stop shopping
If your current employer runs Azure, stay on Azure; Redmond-adjacent postings reward it. Deliverable: a written one-page target list of 15 Eastside and Seattle employers taken from Built In Seattle and Glassdoor, with the exact stack each one names.
Ship a retrieval system, not a chatbot
Index a real corpus you care about, something with ugly documents in it. Deliverable: a deployed endpoint with a measured p95 latency and a per-query cost you can quote in an interview.
Add evaluation, because this is the actual differentiator
Build a test set of 60 to 100 questions with expected answers, then score retrieval and generation separately so you know which half is failing. Deliverable: an eval report showing a before and after on one change you made.
Turn it into an agent with tools and limits
Give it two real tools, a retry budget and a hard token ceiling. Deliverable: a trace of one run where a tool failed and the agent recovered without looping.
Go local and in person
Seattle still hires through rooms. Deliverable: two in-person conversations, at a Seattle AI or data meetup and at a University of Washington or Bellevue College evening event, plus a one-paragraph write-up of your project you can say out loud in 90 seconds.
Apply narrow
Twelve applications to the stack-matched list, not 200 to everything. Deliverable: three first-round screens booked.
Structure built from the Seattle posting requirements cited above, checked 2 October 2026.
Four Mistakes That Cost Seattle Candidates the Offer
Quoting a Bay Area number
Seattle recruiters know the no-income-tax maths better than you do. Anchor on total take-home, not gross, or you will look like you have not done the work.
NegotiationInterviewing for AI with a notebook
A Jupyter notebook with a demo prompt reads as a tutorial completed. A deployed endpoint with an eval suite reads as an engineer. Same project, different artefact.
PortfolioIgnoring the Eastside entirely
Filtering job search to “Seattle, WA” drops the Bellevue and Redmond postings where the growth is. Search the metro, then decide on the commute.
SearchNo on-call story

So Would I Move to Seattle in 2026?
If you already have US work authorisation and any real depth in cloud, data or AI engineering, yes, and without much hesitation. The pay is near the top of the market, the absence of state income tax is worth more than most people calculate, and the 2 Line finally made the whole metro reachable from one apartment. If you are a generalist without authorisation, build the specialism first and treat Seattle as the destination rather than the starting point, because the city is not currently absorbing generalists.
In Anita’s position I would spend the next quarter doing exactly one thing: shipping a retrieval and agent system with an eval harness attached, because that single artefact is what separates her from the several thousand other competent backend engineers inside a 20 mile radius. The AI Engineer course is built around exactly that build, live on weekend mornings Pacific time, and it is the next step I would take.

Frequently asked questions
Are tech jobs in Seattle still worth moving for in 2026?
Yes if you have US work authorisation and depth in cloud, data or AI engineering. Seattle held its No. 2 spot in the 2026 tech talent ranking and Glassdoor listed 6,322 tech jobs there in September 2026. The caveat is real though: the region lost close to 7,000 jobs in 2025 and office vacancy is the highest of the 50 markets ranked, so generalist hiring is weak.
How much does an AI engineer make in Seattle?
ZipRecruiter put the Seattle AI engineer average at $115,862 in September 2026, with most between $95,600 and $132,700, while senior listings in the same market advertise $170,000 to $210,000 and specialised ML platform roles advertise $245,000 to $345,000. The title covers a very wide band, so read the specific posting rather than the average.
Is Bellevue or Seattle better for a tech job?
Bellevue and Redmond are where the growth currently sits. AWS is building out its Bellevue engineering organisation, Microsoft expanded on its Redmond campus rather than moving into Seattle, and Zscaler opened an expanded Bellevue workspace as a Pacific Northwest hub. Since the full 2 Line opened on 28 March 2026 you can live in Seattle and reach either without a car.
Can I get a tech job in Seattle from India in 2026?
Directly, it is hard. The $100,000 annual H-1B fee that took effect on 21 September 2025 pushed Amazon, Microsoft and Google toward candidates already in the United States and toward Optional Practical Training. The two realistic routes are a US master’s degree with STEM OPT, or two strong years at the India engineering centre of a company that has a Seattle or Redmond office, then an internal transfer.
Which certifications do Seattle employers actually name?
Because AWS and Microsoft are headquartered in the metro, local postings name specific exam codes more often than postings elsewhere do: SAA-C03 and DOP-C02 on the AWS side, AZ-305 and AZ-400 on the Azure side, DP-700 for Fabric data engineering and PL-300 for Power BI analytics. One cloud taken to a deep level beats two associate-level badges from two vendors.
Is Seattle cheaper than San Francisco for a software engineer?
On tax, clearly. Washington has no state income tax, worth roughly $16,200 a year at a $200,000 salary and about $26,760 at $300,000 compared with California. On housing it is cheaper but not cheap: the Seattle average rent is $2,253 a month in 2026 and a one-bedroom in South Lake Union runs $2,800 to $3,500.
How long does it take to switch into an AI engineering role?
If you already write production code, budget three to four months of part-time work to reach a credible portfolio, which is roughly the 90-day plan in this guide at 30 hours a month, then another two to three months for the search itself. Coming from a non-coding background, double it. 360DT’s AI Engineer course runs 100+ hours live over 16 weeks, which maps to that timeline.
Which neighbourhoods should I look at if I work in Redmond?
Anything on the 2 Line, which runs 14 miles from downtown Seattle to Overlake in Redmond with 10 stations including South Bellevue, Downtown Bellevue, BelRed and Mercer Island. If you want the cheapest tracked Seattle rents instead and are willing to commute, RentCafe lists Mount Baker at $1,329, Loyal Heights at $1,512 and Wedgwood at $1,568 a month in 2026.
