Career & Salary · 2026Mechanical Engineer to IT Jobs in India 2026: A 10-Month Switch Plan and What It Actually Pays
Moving from mechanical engineer to IT jobs in India takes most people 8 to 12 months of part-time study, and cloud or data support work is the realistic first door. Naukri currently advertises about 14,846 cloud engineer openings in India. Expect a flat or slightly lower first offer, then a much steeper second year.
- Cloud and data are the doors that open. Naukri lists 34,595 mechanical engineer vacancies in India against 14,846 for cloud engineer, but the cloud listings advertise roughly double the money at the three year mark.
- Budget 10 months, not 3. Fundamentals take about 3 months of evenings, one associate certification plus one deployed project takes 4 more, and the search itself usually eats 2 to 3.
- Your first IT offer can be lower than your current CTC. Cloud support and junior cloud engineer listings commonly sit at Rs 3.5 to 6 LPA, which is a genuine cut if you are already at 7 LPA in a design role.
- The exams are cheap, your evenings are not. Microsoft lists AZ-900 at roughly Rs 3,691 in India and AZ-104 at about Rs 4,800, so the fee is a rounding error next to 300 hours of study.
- Keep the manufacturing domain. Shop floor context is the one thing a computer science graduate cannot copy, and engineering GCCs pay for it.
- Most attempts stall on a pile of completion certificates with nothing deployed behind them, and on applying only through job portals instead of asking for an internal transfer first.
You are 27, three years into a maintenance or design role at an auto component supplier in Pune, and your last increment came in at 7 percent. A batchmate who spent six months on cloud certifications is now quoting a number you will not reach for another five years on your current track. That arithmetic, not a sudden love of Python, is what sends most mechanical engineers looking at IT.
Mechanical Engineer to IT Jobs: Is This Switch Realistic for You?
Three things predict whether this works, and none of them is motivation. The first is spare hours: you need 12 to 16 a week, every week, for about nine months. If your plant runs six days and you are on call for breakdowns, you have maybe 6 hours, and 6 hours a week turns a 10 month plan into a 20 month plan. Be honest about that number before you spend anything.
The second is how many years you are carrying. At 0 to 4 years of experience, employers will read you as a trainable engineer and the degree stream matters less. At 5 to 8 years, you are competing against people with the same number of years inside IT, so you cannot enter at your current level and you will usually reset one or two bands. Past 9 years in core mechanical, the switch still happens, but it almost always goes through your own employer or a manufacturing GCC rather than a cold application.
The third is whether you can tolerate a year of looking less competent than you are. You currently know which bearing is about to fail from the sound it makes. In month four of a cloud transition you will be stuck for two hours on a subnet mask.
Here is the part the course adverts leave out: if you are 34, have a home loan, are the only earner, and cannot absorb even a flat offer, do not start this in the form described below. Do the cheaper version instead. Learn Python and Power BI inside your current job, automate the reporting your plant does by hand, and move into a digital manufacturing or MES team at your own company where your salary continues. It is slower and less glamorous, and it carries a fraction of the risk.
The 10-month switch, stage by stage
Each stage ends in something you can show a hiring manager, not a module you finished.
Stage pay bands are advertised ranges from public Indian job listings, not guarantees. Checked 26 September 2026.
The Three Doors That Actually Open (and the One That Mostly Does Not)
Mechanical engineers get sold the software developer story because it is the most famous one. It is also the hardest door for you specifically, because product companies hiring developers screen on data structures and algorithms against candidates who have been writing code since their second year of college. You can win that fight. It takes 12 to 18 months of daily problem solving, and at 4 years of experience you will still enter as a fresher.
If you want my actual recommendation: take the cloud and infrastructure door. The reason is not that cloud is easier. It is that cloud hiring screens on a working environment you can build and demonstrate, which is a fair test for someone with three years of real engineering discipline, whereas an algorithms interview is a test of how long you have been practising a specific puzzle format. The trade-off you are accepting is on-call rotations and a career that lives closer to operations than to product.
| Door | First role you can realistically land | Entry certification worth booking | Advertised entry band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud and DevOps | Cloud support associate, then cloud engineer | AZ-900, then AZ-104 or AZ-305, or SAA-C03 on the AWS side | Rs 3.5 to 6 LPA, rising to Rs 6 to 12 LPA in year two |
| Data and analytics | Reporting or MIS analyst, then data engineer | PL-300 for Power BI, then DP-700 for Microsoft Fabric | Rs 4 to 7 LPA, rising to Rs 8 to 16 LPA for Fabric or Databricks work |
| Digital engineering and IIoT | Simulation, PLM or predictive maintenance engineer | Python plus one platform credential, often an MLOps track | Rs 6 to 14 LPA, and your mechanical degree is an advantage here rather than a question |
Advertised bands above are collected from public listings on Naukri, LinkedIn and Indeed for India in September 2026. They describe what employers put in adverts, which is consistently wider and slightly more optimistic than what individual offers land at.
Door three deserves more attention than it gets. Taggd’s 2026 GCC report found that 52 percent of global capability centres in India plan to increase hiring this year, up from 47 percent, with digital engineering named as one of the segments holding up while general manufacturing hiring stayed cautious. Predictive maintenance and smart factory work sits exactly where your degree and a cloud skill overlap, and almost nobody applying for those roles has both.

Mechanical Engineer to Cloud Engineer: The Real Skills Gap
Write this table out for yourself before you buy anything. Most people over-estimate the gap on the left and badly under-estimate the two rows at the bottom.
| What a cloud role needs | What you already have from mechanical | What you actually have to build |
|---|---|---|
| Systems thinking, failure modes, root cause analysis | All of it. FMEA is closer to incident review than most IT graduates get in three years | Nothing. Learn the vocabulary: blast radius, SLO, post-mortem |
| Reading and writing technical documentation | Strong. You already read drawings and standards for a living | Nothing, beyond getting comfortable with the Microsoft Learn objective lists |
| Linux command line and shell | Very little unless you have touched a CNC controller or a SCADA box | 40 to 60 hours. Files, permissions, processes, systemd, ssh, grep |
| Networking: subnets, routing, DNS, TLS | Nothing transferable | 30 to 40 hours, and this is the single most common place people give up |
| One scripting language, usually Python | MATLAB or VBA experience helps more than you think | 50 to 70 hours to be genuinely useful, not to finish a tutorial |
| Cloud platform depth: identity, network, storage, compute, cost | Nothing | 80 to 100 hours in a real subscription, which is what an associate level certification is actually measuring |
| Infrastructure as code and CI/CD | Nothing, but the discipline of repeatable process is familiar | 40 hours: Terraform or Bicep, plus one pipeline that deploys something |
Add it up and the honest total is 240 to 310 hours of real work, plus the hours you lose re-learning things you forgot. At 14 hours a week that is about six months, which is why a nine or ten month plan with slack in it is the one that survives contact with a plant shutdown or a family wedding.
How to Switch From Mechanical to IT in 2026: A 10-Month Plan
This plan assumes you keep your current job the whole way through and study on weekends and two weeknights. That is the only version of this plan with acceptable risk.
| Months | What you do | Weekly hours | The artefact at the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Linux command line and one Python book. No cloud yet. No certification talk. | 12 | A Python script that parses your own plant or project data into a summary CSV |
| 2 to 3 | Networking fundamentals, then AZ-900. Book the exam in week 10 before you feel ready. | 14 | AZ-900 passed, roughly Rs 3,691 at Microsoft’s India price |
| 4 to 6 | Azure core services in a real subscription: identity, VNets, storage, VMs, monitoring, cost alerts. Start AZ-104 objectives. | 16 | A two environment landing zone you built by hand and can explain end to end |
| 7 | Terraform or Bicep, Git, one CI/CD pipeline. Rebuild the month 4 to 6 environment as code. | 16 | A public repo that provisions your landing zone in one command |
| 8 | Sit AZ-104, about Rs 4,800. Rewrite your resume as a cloud resume. Ask your own manager about an internal move. | 10 | AZ-104 passed, one page resume with the project at the top, one internal conversation opened |
| 9 to 10 | Apply. 8 to 12 targeted applications a week, referrals first, portals last. Two mock interviews a week. | 10 | Offers, or clear feedback on which gap is blocking you |
Note what months 4 to 7 are not: they are not a video course played at 1.5x. Every hour there should leave something running in a subscription you pay for out of your own pocket, which is usually Rs 800 to Rs 2,000 a month if you remember to tear resources down. Set a budget alert at Rs 1,500 on day one. People who skip that step learn about it from a credit card statement.
If doing months 4 to 8 alone sounds like the part where you will quietly stop, that is the case for a structured live cohort. 360DT’s Azure Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer course runs 80+ hours live over 12 weeks on Saturday and Sunday evenings, 8:00 to 11:00 PM IST, covering the AZ-305 and AZ-400 objectives with hands on labs, so the schedule fits around a Monday to Friday plant job. A free webinar is a cheaper way to test whether the format suits you before you commit any money.
Where your 14 weekly hours should actually go
If labs are not the biggest slice, you are studying for a quiz rather than for a job.

Mechanical Engineer to IT Jobs: Advertised Pay Bands in India 2026
Two numbers explain why this switch keeps happening. Naukri lists 34,595 mechanical engineer vacancies in India, so the demand is not the problem. What differs is the ceiling. Glassdoor puts the average base for a cloud engineer in India at about Rs 7 lakh with a base range of roughly Rs 4 to 10.5 lakh, and for Azure DevOps engineers specifically its May 2026 page reports an average around Rs 8.25 lakh from 315 submitted salaries, with the 25th to 75th percentile spread running Rs 5.6 to 13.1 lakh. Core mechanical roles at the same experience rarely advertise that spread.
| Stage after the switch | Advertised range, India, Sept 2026 | What the listing typically asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud support associate, first 12 months | Rs 3.5 to 6 LPA | AZ-900 or equivalent, ticketing tools, Linux basics, shift work |
| Cloud engineer, 1 to 3 years in the role | Rs 6 to 12 LPA | AZ-104 or SAA-C03, one scripting language, Terraform exposure |
| Cloud or DevOps engineer, 3 to 6 years in the role | Rs 12 to 22 LPA | Kubernetes, pipeline ownership, infrastructure as code at scale |
| Senior DevOps or platform engineer, 6 to 9 years | Rs 20 to 35 LPA | Multi subscription design, cost governance, on-call leadership |
| Cloud solutions architect, 8 years and above | Rs 28 to 55 LPA | AZ-305 or an equivalent architect credential, stakeholder facing design |
Collection basis: ranges read from public listings on Naukri, LinkedIn and Indeed for India during September 2026, cross-checked against Glassdoor India salary pages. These are advertised ranges, not offers and not guarantees. Location matters by several lakh at the same band, and product companies and GCCs sit at the top of each range while IT services sit near the bottom.
Staying versus switching, advertised midpoints
Year one of the switch is below where you already are. Year four is not.
Midpoints of advertised ranges from public Indian listings and Glassdoor India pages, checked 26 September 2026. Advertised ranges are not guarantees of individual pay.

What You Earn During the Transition, Which Nobody Budgets For
The plan above costs you almost no salary, because you never leave. The cost shows up at the offer stage. A cloud support or junior cloud engineer role is priced on years in that role, not total years of work, so a mechanical engineer at Rs 7.2 LPA regularly sees first IT offers at Rs 5.5 to 7 LPA. Sometimes flat. Sometimes 15 percent down.
The second year is where the arithmetic turns. Business Today reported on 23 September 2026 that Indian salary increments are settling into an 8 to 12 percent band for 2026, while skills including AI and ML, semiconductors, renewable energy and automotive battery technology can command up to about 30 percent on a job change. A cloud engineer with one year of real production experience and a certification is negotiating against that second number. A mechanical design engineer in a tier-two supplier is negotiating against the first.
- It takes 16 months, not 10. The most common cause is not ability. It is two or three months where work overran and studying stopped, after which the AZ-104 material has to be relearned.
- You take the pay cut and the role is not what was advertised. Plenty of “cloud engineer” listings at the entry band are ticket triage on a night shift with no infrastructure access. Ask in the interview what percentage of the week is ticket work, and ask for a number.
- The degree filter is real in some places. Skills based shortlisting is growing in India but it is far from universal, and some campus-linked and government-adjacent pipelines still screen on the degree stream. Referrals go around this. Portal applications do not.
- You never get the second year. The switch only pays if you stay in the new role long enough to be priced on it. Leaving cloud after 8 months because the first year was hard means you carry the cut and none of the upside.
None of this is an argument against switching. It is an argument for switching while employed, with a 6 month cash buffer, and with the first offer treated as an entry ticket rather than the destination.
Case Study: Maintenance Engineer in Pune to Azure Cloud Engineer in 11 Months
This is an illustrative composite built from typical market paths, not a real named person and not a 360DT student outcome.
Start point: 28 years old, B.E. Mechanical from a tier-three college in Maharashtra, three and a half years as a maintenance engineer at an auto component plant near Chakan, Rs 6.9 LPA, six day week with alternate Saturdays off. What he had going for him: he had already written VBA macros to replace a manual breakdown log, so he was not starting from zero on logic.
Months 1 to 3: Linux and Python on weekday nights, networking on Sundays. Passed AZ-900 in week 11 at roughly Rs 3,691. The hard part was not the material, it was that two plant shutdowns in month two cost him nine study days.
Months 4 to 8: Azure identity, networking, storage and monitoring in a personal subscription with a Rs 1,500 budget alert. Built a hub and spoke landing zone by hand, then rebuilt it in Terraform in month seven. Passed AZ-104 in month eight at about Rs 4,800. Total exam and cloud spend across the period: under Rs 20,000.
Months 9 to 11: 96 applications, of which the 11 that came through referrals produced 7 of his 9 interviews. Three offers. He took the middle one at Rs 7.4 LPA as an associate cloud engineer at an IT services firm with a manufacturing client, specifically because the account was a manufacturing one and his plant background was the reason they shortlisted him.
What went wrong along the way: he spent six weeks in month five on Kubernetes because a YouTube roadmap told him to, and none of it came up in a single entry level interview. He also lost two processes at the resume screen before he stopped describing himself as a maintenance engineer who is learning cloud and started describing himself as a cloud engineer with manufacturing domain experience. Same facts. Very different read.
Where he sat 14 months after the switch: moved internally to a platform team, Rs 10.8 LPA. The band, not the guarantee: listings at that level in September 2026 advertise Rs 6 to 12 LPA.
Six Mistakes That Stall the Mechanical to IT Switch
Collecting certificates instead of building one thing
Four completion certificates and no deployed environment loses to one candidate with a Terraform repo and a cost story. Interviewers ask what broke and how you fixed it, and a course completion page has no answer.
Build, then certifyStarting with Kubernetes
Container orchestration is the most talked about and least useful thing to learn first. Without Linux, networking and one cloud platform underneath it, you are memorising YAML. It belongs in year two.
Order mattersNever asking your own employer
If your plant has an IT, MES or digital manufacturing function, an internal move is the cheapest path in existence: no salary reset, and your domain knowledge is already trusted. Most people apply to 100 strangers before asking one manager.
Internal firstKeeping a mechanical resume
Leading with three years of maintenance and burying the cloud project at the bottom tells a screener you are a mechanical engineer. Lead with the project, the certification and the tools. Keep the plant experience as domain, in two lines.
Reframe, do not inflateQuitting to study full time
The maths does not work. Nine months without income to save 4 months of calendar time is the worst trade available, and it also removes the leverage of negotiating while employed.
Stay employedAnchoring on your old CTC
Quoting your mechanical salary as the base for a percentage hike caps you at your old track. Price yourself against the advertised band for the cloud role, which is the number the recruiter is already working from.
Price the roleResume Lines, the Interview Answer and a Negotiation Script
Two resume lines you can adapt today
Copy the shape, not the numbers. Both of these pass a screen because they name a tool, a scope and a measurable result.
- Cut manual OEE reporting on a 40 machine line from 6 hours a week to 20 minutes by extracting SCADA exports with Python and scheduling the job on an Azure Function.
- Provisioned a two environment Azure landing zone (hub and spoke VNet, Key Vault, Log Analytics, RBAC) with Terraform; teardown scripted and budget alerts kept monthly spend under Rs 1,500.
The “why are you leaving mechanical” answer
Do not say the pay, and do not criticise manufacturing. Say this instead, in your own words: “The part of my job I was best at was finding why a line stopped and making sure it did not stop the same way again. In my plant that work moved into data and cloud tooling, and I wanted to be on that side of it. That is why I spent this year on Azure rather than on a mechanical certification.” It is true for most people who make this switch, and it explains the transition as continuity rather than escape.
A negotiation script for the CTC question
When the recruiter asks for your current CTC on the first call, give the number and immediately move the anchor: “I am at 7.2 LPA in a mechanical role. I know cloud engineer listings in your band advertise around 8 to 12, and I am pricing myself against the cloud role rather than my last one. I am comfortable in the mid nines if the joining date works for both of us.” Then stop talking. If they come back at 7.2 flat, ask for a six month review written into the offer letter with a named scope, which is a request companies say yes to far more often than a bigger number.
One more thing worth knowing: the tools you learn here do not lock you into infrastructure forever. The same Azure and Python base is what generative AI developer work and RAG and agent engineering build on, and Microsoft 365 Copilot administration is a lower intensity adjacent door if you decide operations suits you better than engineering.

Frequently asked questions
Can a mechanical engineer get IT jobs in India without a computer science degree?
Yes, and cloud, data and digital engineering roles are where it happens most often. Skills based shortlisting has grown in India but it is not universal, so expect some pipelines to still filter on the degree stream. The way around that filter is a referral plus a demonstrable project, not a better cover letter.
How long does it really take to switch from mechanical to IT?
Eight to twelve months at 12 to 16 hours a week, of which two to three months is the job search rather than study. At 6 hours a week it stretches to 18 to 24 months. The skills gap adds up to roughly 240 to 310 hours of genuine hands on work before you are interview ready.
Will I have to take a pay cut when I move from mechanical to IT?
Often yes on the first offer. Entry cloud roles are priced on years in that role, so listings commonly advertise Rs 3.5 to 6 LPA, which can be flat or slightly below a mechanical engineer already at Rs 7 LPA. The gap usually closes in the second year, when you are negotiating as a cloud engineer with production experience rather than as a career changer.
Am I too old to switch from mechanical to IT at 32?
No, but the route changes. Past about eight years of experience, cold applications work poorly and the switch usually goes through an internal transfer, a manufacturing GCC, or a role where your domain is the reason you were shortlisted. Aim at digital engineering, predictive maintenance or a cloud role on a manufacturing account rather than a generic fresher pipeline.
Should a mechanical engineer start with AZ-900 or go straight to AZ-104?
Start with AZ-900, priced at roughly Rs 3,691 in India, mainly because it forces you to finish something in month three and gives you the vocabulary. Do not stop there: AZ-900 on its own is not a hiring signal. AZ-104 at about Rs 4,800 is the one that appears in job adverts, and it means little without a built environment behind it.
Is the mechanical engineer to IT jobs switch still worth it in 2026?
On advertised bands, yes, and the gap is in the ceiling rather than the entry point. Cloud and DevOps listings in India advertise Rs 12 to 22 LPA at the three to six year mark and Rs 28 to 55 LPA for architect level work, spreads that core mechanical roles at the same experience rarely show. It is worth it only if you can absorb a flat first offer and stay in the new role long enough to be priced on it.
Can I switch to IT without quitting my current mechanical job?
That is the only version we would recommend. Weekend and evening study keeps your income and your negotiating position intact, which is why live cohorts that run on Saturday and Sunday evenings exist. Quitting to study full time saves a few months of calendar and costs you nine months of salary plus your leverage in the offer conversation.
Which pays more for a mechanical engineer, cloud or data analytics?
Entry bands are similar, roughly Rs 3.5 to 7 LPA advertised for both. Cloud and DevOps pull ahead from year three, with Rs 12 to 22 LPA advertised against Rs 8 to 16 LPA for Fabric and Databricks data work at comparable experience. Pick data if you prefer SQL and reporting to networks and on-call, because the day to day difference will matter more to you than two lakh at the entry band.
What I would do in your position
If you are inside five years of experience and can find 14 hours a week, take the cloud door, keep your job, and treat the first offer as the price of entry rather than the payoff. Book AZ-900 in month three whether or not you feel ready, because a deadline is the only thing that reliably converts intent into study. Then spend months four to seven building one environment you can explain in detail, and ask your own manager for an internal move before you ask 96 strangers.
If you cannot find those hours, do not start. The half finished version of this plan is the expensive one. When you can, the Azure Solutions Architect and DevOps Engineer course is the structured way through months four to eight, and a free demo class will tell you in three hours whether a live weekend cohort is a format you will actually show up for.
