DP-600 vs DP-700 in 2026: 10 Criteria, Exam Costs and Which Fabric Certification Pays Off Sooner

DP-600 vs DP-700 splits on one line: DP-600 certifies the Fabric analytics engineer who owns semantic models, DAX and reports, while DP-700 certifies the data engineer who owns ingestion, transformation and orchestration. Both exams list at $165 in the US, both sit at associate level, and neither is a prerequisite for the other.

12 October 20269 min readBy the 360 Digital Transformation Editorial Team
Key takeaways
  • Ownership decides it, not difficulty. A broken refresh at 7am is DP-700. A wrong number in a report is DP-600.
  • Price is identical. Both list at $165 in the US; the rupee amount and tax show at scheduling.
  • DP-700 absorbed DP-203's demand. Microsoft retired the Azure Data Engineer Associate exam and points candidates at DP-700.
  • DP-600 is the shorter hop if you hold PL-300: roughly 50 to 70 focused hours against 90 to 120 for DP-700.
  • Practice capacity costs more than the exam. Pay-as-you-go F2 runs about $262.80 a month in East US. Pause it between sessions.

Your Power BI model refreshed at 6am, the warehouse table behind it did not, and the regional head is in a 9am review looking at yesterday's revenue. Two people could have prevented that: one owns the measure definitions, the other owns the pipeline that should have landed the table at 5:30. Microsoft sells a separate associate certification for each.

DP-600 vs DP-700: the one difference that decides it

Both exams live inside Fabric, both are associate level, both cost the same and both need 700 of 1000. The marketing makes them sound like two flavours of one thing. They are not.

DP-600 leads to Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate. It tests whether you can make data that has already arrived answerable without being wrong: a warehouse modelled sensibly, relationships that hold, DAX measures that survive filter context.

DP-700 leads to Fabric Data Engineer Associate. It tests whether the data arrives at all, on time and in the right shape, and whether you notice when it does not. Pipelines, Spark notebooks, Eventstream, incremental loads, capacity monitoring, and finding out why last night's run took 40 minutes instead of 9.

So the useful question is not which exam is harder. It is which 7am call you want to answer. A reporting analyst who picks DP-700 because data engineering pays better will spend most of the prep learning PySpark from scratch: a career change wearing an exam code. 360DT teaches the DP-700 syllabus as a live Fabric data engineering program.

Fabric analytics engineer vs data engineer: what each exam tests

Microsoft revises both skills outlines, and third-party sites quoting exact domain percentages often quote a version that has since changed, so read the outline on the exam page before you plan. The shape of each exam does not change, and that is enough to allocate hours. The split below is our recommended allocation.

DP-600: how to spend 60 hours

Modelling and DAX fail more candidates than the warehouse.

Prepare and serve data35%
Semantic models and DAX30%
Explore and analyse data20%
Deploy and govern workspaces15%

360DT recommended allocation across the DP-600 outline areas, checked 12 October 2026.

DP-700: how to spend 70 hours

Monitoring is the domain candidates skip, then lose marks on.

Ingest and transform data35%
Implement and manage the solution25%
Monitor and optimise25%
SQL and PySpark drills15%

360DT recommended allocation across the DP-700 outline areas, checked 12 October 2026.

Notice what is absent from the DP-600 column: anything resembling a scheduler. And from DP-700: DAX. If your modelling is shaky, fix it first; the PL-300 work in 360DT's data analyst course is a cheaper place to learn you do not understand filter context.

DP-600 vs DP-700 compared on 10 criteria

Four things are identical, checked 12 October 2026: the $165 US list fee, the 700 of 1000 pass mark, the 40 to 60 questions, and the absence of any prerequisite.

Criterion DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer) DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer)
1. What you own Semantic models, measures, report correctness Ingestion, orchestration, freshness, run cost
2. Tools tested Power BI, Power Query, warehouse, lakehouse Pipelines, Spark notebooks, Eventstream
3. Language you must write DAX and T-SQL PySpark or Spark SQL, plus T-SQL
4. Prep hours from reporting 50 to 70 90 to 120
5. Prep hours from SQL or ETL 70 to 90 60 to 80
6. Natural predecessor PL-300 DP-900, or prior ETL work
7. Job titles in India Analytics engineer, BI developer Data engineer, platform engineer
8. Hiring demand Steady, usually inside existing BI teams Wider; the only live Microsoft data engineering associate path
9. Hardest in the exam room DAX under filter context, deployment pipelines Incremental loads, capacity and Spark tuning
10. Who should skip it Anyone who has never built a star schema Anyone unwilling to write Python

Rows 4 and 5 are the ones to read twice. The exams are priced alike, so the currency you spend is time, and the direction you arrive from changes it by a factor of two. For every Microsoft and Claude track, see the certifications overview.

What the DP-700 exam cost really adds up to in India

The fee is the small number. Microsoft lists both exams at $165 in the US and prices the rest by the country where you are proctored, so the rupee amount and tax appear when you pick a slot; one widely circulated vendor blog puts the India price near Rs 4,865, but that page is months old.

The practice environment is what catches people out. Pay-as-you-go F2 capacity runs about $262.80 a month in East US at roughly $0.18 per capacity-unit hour, per the Azure retail pricing vendor guides quoted on 12 October 2026. That is more than the exam itself. Capacity can be paused, so run it only in the hours you study.

Cost line DP-600 path DP-700 path
Exam fee (US list; India amount at scheduling) $165 $165
One retake, if needed Full fee again Full fee again
Practice capacity, 8 weeks, paused when idle Rs 1,500 to 3,000 Rs 2,500 to 5,000
Power BI Pro licence, if needed $14 per user per month, up from $10 in April 2025 Often not needed
Calendar time at 8 to 10 hrs a week 6 to 8 weeks 9 to 12 weeks

A worked scenario: two people, one BI team, one budget

An illustrative scenario, not a real client. A mid-size insurer in Pune runs a two-person BI team on Fabric. One has three years of Power BI and holds PL-300. The other came from SQL Server Integration Services: decent SQL, no Python. The manager has sanctioned two exam vouchers and an F2 capacity.

The wrong move is sending both at the same exam. Send the PL-300 holder at DP-600, where perhaps 55 of her 60 hours build on what she already half knows: week seven. Send the integration developer at DP-700, where pipeline instincts transfer and the gap is PySpark plus monitoring: 70 hours, week ten. Send them both at DP-700 and you get a team that can move data and nobody accountable for whether the number is right.

The Microsoft Fabric certification path, and which end of it pays

The Microsoft Fabric certification path is shorter than it looks, because Microsoft has been pruning it. DP-203, the old Azure Data Engineer Associate exam, is retired, and Microsoft directs candidates to DP-700 as the closest replacement. No transition, no partial credit: you sit the whole exam. That is why DP-700 carries more hiring weight than its age suggests.

A sequence by starting point: from non-technical, DP-900 then PL-300 then DP-600, about nine months at a working pace. From Power BI, DP-600 next, DP-700 later only if you want out of reporting. From SQL or ETL, DP-700 directly.

Analyst to platform owner

Typical advertised bands, not a promise. The DP-700 jump gets harder to make later.

Data engineer

Ranges are what Indian listings typically advertise; industry reports suggest wide variation by city and company type.

Two caveats. The middle bands overlap heavily, so a strong analytics engineer at a product company will out-earn a mediocre data engineer at a services firm. And neither exam reaches the top band; that needs someone who can reason about cost, identity and networking across a cloud estate, where the AZ-305 and AZ-400 architecture track starts. Past DP-700, the work worth chasing is retrieval and agents on a governed lakehouse, covered in the RAG and AI agents track. Two credentials that substitute for neither: AB-900 for Copilot administration and CCDV-F.

Choose DP-600 if, choose DP-700 if

Choose DP-600 if

  • You hold PL-300 or have two years of Power BI behind you. This is the shortest credible next step.
  • Your organisation runs on Power BI and the bottleneck is model quality, not data arrival.
  • You want to be certified this quarter, and 60 hours is what you have.

Choose DP-700 if

  • You want the wider market and higher ceiling, and accept roughly twice the hours from a reporting start.
  • You have SSIS, Airflow or Azure Data Factory history. That transfers almost completely.
  • You will write Python without resenting it. If that made you wince, take DP-600.

There is a third option nobody sells you. If you hold neither exam and have never built a star schema, take PL-300 first. A DP-600 pass on shaky modelling produces an analytics engineer who can configure a workspace and still ship a measure that double-counts returns.

What usually goes wrong here

Nobody fails these exams because the syllabus was secret. Four reasons repeat.

1

Studying Fabric without a capacity you can break

Reading about Spark pool sizing teaches you nothing about the Monitoring hub. Spin up F2, run a deliberately bad notebook, watch the capacity metrics app throttle you, fix it. Then pause it.

Both exams
2

Treating DP-600 as PL-300 with extra steps

The warehouse and lakehouse half is new if your world has been Power BI Desktop. T-SQL endpoints, shortcuts and medallion layout are not Power BI concepts, and they carry weight.

DP-600
3

Letting the credential lapse

Renewal is free, open book and online, and the window opens six months before expiry. Miss it and you re-sit the full exam. Diarise it the day you pass.

Both exams
4

Memorising question banks instead of building

Both exams ask scenarios where two answers work and one is cheaper. Dumps teach the first-order answer; the exam wants the second-order one.

Both exams
The honest caveat

Neither exam is worth taking if your employer has not committed to Fabric and you are not trying to leave. The licensing shape pushes Fabric towards organisations that can justify real capacity: F64 is the tier where report viewers stop needing their own Power BI Pro licence, and pay-as-you-go F64 runs near $8,400 a month in US regions. Plenty of Indian mid-market firms will stay on Pro licences with Snowflake or Databricks for years, so a Fabric certification there is a bet on your next employer.

The verdict

If you want to be more employable in twelve months and you will write Python, take DP-700. Retiring DP-203 funnelled every Microsoft data engineering candidate into one exam, the role has the wider market and higher ceiling in India, and the ingestion and monitoring skills transfer if your employer later moves off Fabric. The cost: roughly twice the hours from a reporting start.

If you already hold PL-300 and your day is spent defending numbers rather than delivering them, take DP-600 this quarter. It is the shorter hop, it certifies what you are already accountable for, and an analytics engineer who owns the semantic layer is harder to replace than the market prices them.

What we would not do is sit both inside a year. Pick the call you want to answer, pass that exam, then spend six months building with it in public. The badge gets you the interview. The repository is what gets read in it.

Frequently asked questions

DP-600 vs DP-700: which one should I take first in 2026?

Take DP-600 first if you hold PL-300 or have two years of Power BI behind you: it builds on skills you have and needs roughly 50 to 70 focused hours. Take DP-700 first if you come from SQL, SSIS or Azure Data Factory, or want the wider job market and will write Python. Neither is a prerequisite for the other.

How much does the DP-700 exam cost in India?

Microsoft lists DP-700 at $165 in the United States and prices it by the country where you are proctored, so the rupee figure and tax appear when you choose a slot. Vendor blogs quote figures near Rs 4,865, but those pages age quickly. Budget separately for practice capacity: pay-as-you-go F2 is about $262.80 a month in East US if left running.

Is DP-600 easier than DP-700?

Neither is easier in the abstract. Both are associate level, both have 40 to 60 questions and both need 700 of 1000. DP-600 is easier coming from Power BI, DP-700 coming from ETL work. The gap is your starting point.

Did DP-700 replace DP-203?

Effectively yes. Microsoft retired the DP-203 Azure Data Engineer Associate exam and points candidates to the Fabric Data Engineer Associate certification earned through DP-700. There is no transition or partial credit, so a DP-203 pass does not shorten the exam, though Data Factory and Spark knowledge shortens the study.

Can I pass DP-700 without knowing Python?

You might scrape through on SQL and pipeline knowledge, but it is a bad plan. Spark notebooks run through the ingestion and transformation material, and the job will ask for PySpark in month one. Budget 15 to 20 hours of drills, or take DP-600.

Do Microsoft Fabric certifications expire?

Yes. Both Fabric associate credentials need annual renewal, which Microsoft provides free as an open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn, extending the certification a year from its expiry date. The window opens six months before expiry. A lapsed certification cannot be renewed; you re-earn it by passing the full exam.

If DP-700 is your answer and you want ingestion, orchestration and monitoring taught in sequence, the Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer course is the next step. To sample the teaching first, the free webinars cover Fabric fundamentals.
