Career & Salary · 2026BPO to IT Jobs in India 2026: How to Switch in 7 Months, Skills Gap and Real Pay Bands
Moving from BPO to IT jobs in India realistically takes seven to ten months of part-time study while you keep your current shift. Service desk, application support and Microsoft 365 administration are the doors that open first, advertised on Indian boards at roughly 3.5 to 7 LPA against a BPO customer service average near 3 LPA.
- The switch is lateral before it is upward. Most people land the first IT role at a similar number. The real jump arrives at the second job, 18 to 24 months later.
- Your adjacent door beats your dream door. A voice process associate gets shortlisted for service desk and Microsoft 365 administration far more easily than for data science, because a screener can read the overlap in four seconds.
- Glassdoor India puts BPO customer service near 3.03 lakh on average, middle of the range 2.56 to 3.50 lakh. That is the number your switch has to beat.
- Copilot administration is a skill, not yet a job title. Indeed India showed 75 M365 Copilot vacancies when we checked, against roughly 203 Microsoft 365 administrator listings on Glassdoor India.
- Buy one exam, around 5,000 rupees, not five. One certification plus one thing you actually built beats a stack of badges.
You finish a 6:30 PM to 3:30 AM shift, sleep until noon, and open Naukri to find that every IT job wants two years you do not have. That is the real obstacle in moving from BPO to IT jobs in India: not motivation, but a resume that reads as "customer handling" to a filter tuned for "L1 support" or "M365 administration". Here is how to close that gap, with the figures we could verify today.
The three numbers that frame this switch
A huge pool you are leaving, a growing sector you are entering, and a title that barely exists yet.
Listing counts and nasscom figures read from public sources on 28 September 2026. Counts move daily.
Is the BPO to IT Switch Realistic for You in 2026?
Run yourself against these five before spending a rupee. The filter is narrower than the internet suggests.
- You can protect 8 to 12 hours a week for seven months. Blocked hours in a calendar, not "I will find time".
- You can absorb a flat year. The first IT offer often matches your CTC or beats it by 15 to 20 percent. If your household needs a 50 percent jump in month one, this plan does not fit.
- You already touch a tool with an admin console. Zendesk, Freshdesk, Salesforce Service Cloud, Genesys. That is the hook your story hangs on.
- Your written English is clean. Support and administration are written jobs. Sloppy email costs more interviews than a missing certification.
- You are switching toward one role family, not away from BPO. People who apply to "any IT job" send 200 applications for four calls.
Non technical to IT jobs in India: what actually disqualifies you
Almost nothing on paper. A BCom does not block you from service desk or Microsoft 365 administration, and plenty of Indian support teams run on non engineering graduates. What blocks you is a resume with no verifiable artefact on it. A screener forgives a commerce degree. They do not forgive a claim they cannot check.
BPO to IT Jobs: The Four Doors That Actually Open
Four realistic first landings. They are not equal, and I will name the one I would pick.
1. Service desk and technical support (L1)
The most permeable and the least glamorous: password resets, VPN failures, corrupted Outlook profiles, and real hours in ServiceNow or Jira Service Management. Indeed India puts the technical support engineer average near 7.2 lakh across all levels, while the Hyring India Salary Model 2026 puts the median CTC nearer 4.1 lakh and freshers at 2.1 to 2.9 lakh. Read those together: the average is pulled up by senior people, and your first offer sits near the bottom.
2. Application support analyst
Often reachable directly if your process was banking, insurance or healthcare backend rather than voice. You support one business application, read logs, run SQL selects, escalate to engineering. Three years of reconciling transactions is worth real money here, and it is the most undersold asset a back office BPO person carries.
3. Microsoft 365 and identity administration
This is the one I would pick, and here is the trade-off I am accepting. The market is smaller than service desk, so you apply to fewer roles. In exchange the work sits closer to engineering, the ceiling is higher, and one credential plus a home lab is genuinely enough to get shortlisted. Glassdoor India listed roughly 203 Office 365 administrator jobs when we checked, up from 191 the previous month, and reported a senior Microsoft 365 administrator average near 18 lakh in a 15 to 20 lakh range. That senior band is five to seven years out. It is still the clearest ladder here.
4. Data analyst
Popular, and the hardest from a standing start, because you compete with freshers who already have six months of SQL and Python. It takes ten months rather than seven, and early offers often sit below what a good BPO team lead earns. If you want it anyway, the PL-300 Power BI route has the shortest honest runway.

The Skills Gap: What You Have vs What the Target Role Needs
Most switch advice starts from zero. You are not at zero.
| What you already do in BPO | What it is called in IT | What you still have to add |
|---|---|---|
| Logging and closing tickets against an SLA in a CRM | Incident management | Priority and impact matrices, escalation paths, hands on time in ServiceNow or Jira Service Management |
| Rotational nights, clean handovers | On call and follow the sun rotas | Nothing. This is a genuine advantage and you should say so in the interview. |
| Explaining a fix to an angry non technical customer | Stakeholder communication | Writing it down: knowledge base articles, short root cause notes |
| Quality scores, AHT and shrinkage reports in Excel | Operational reporting | Power Query and pivot models, then Power BI and basic DAX |
| Following an SOP exactly and flagging deviations | Change management | Change request workflow, rollback plans, runbooks in version control |
| Nothing equivalent | Identity administration | Microsoft Entra ID users and groups, licence assignment, MFA, conditional access |
| Nothing equivalent | Copilot and agent governance | Copilot licence prerequisites, SharePoint oversharing remediation, sensitivity labels, DLP, usage reporting |
| Nothing equivalent | Scripting | PowerShell: Get-MgUser, filtering, bulk licence assignment, CSV export |
Five of those eight rows are things you extend rather than start. That ratio is why this switch works, and why "learn Python from scratch" is usually the wrong first move out of BPO.
How to Switch From BPO to IT in 7 Months: The Month by Month Plan
Assumes 8 to 12 hours a week, the job you are keeping, and the Microsoft 365 target above. Every row ends in something you can put on a resume, because a month with no artefact is a month you cannot prove.
| Month | Focus | Hours a week | Resume line at the end of it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Windows, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP and what a directory actually is | 8 to 10 | A Microsoft 365 developer tenant with 25 test users you created yourself |
| 2 | Entra ID: users, groups, roles, licences, MFA, conditional access | 8 to 10 | Three conditional access policies, documented with the exact block you tested |
| 3 | Exchange Online, SharePoint and Teams administration | 8 to 10 | A shared mailbox and Teams governance policy set with a one page runbook |
| 4 | PowerShell for administrators and Microsoft Graph basics | 10 to 12 | A script exporting every licensed user without MFA to CSV |
| 5 | Copilot and agent governance: the AB-900 exam domains | 10 to 12 | AB-900 sat, plus a written oversharing assessment of your lab tenant |
| 6 | Resume rewrite, LinkedIn rebuild, ITSM tool familiarity | 6 to 8, rest goes to applying | A resume in IT vocabulary and 40 targeted applications, not 400 generic ones |
| 7 | Interviews, scenario practice, negotiation | 6 to 8 | Rehearsed answers to the eight scenario questions support panels reuse |
Month 5 is where people stall, because the exam is the first thing that can fail publicly. Month 6 is the one they skip, which is why they finish certified and unshortlisted.
Where the seven months actually go
If your split is not roughly this, you are over indexing on the fun part.
Editorial recommendation based on the AB-900 skills outline and what support and admin panels test. Not a published survey.
Your First 30 Days, in Detail
The table is the shape. Month one is where people quit, so here it is at useful resolution.
Days 1 to 30 for a working BPO associate
Everything here is free except your time, and nothing needs a laptop above 8 GB of RAM.
Fix the calendar, not the syllabus
Block hours against your actual shift. If you work nights, the window is 4 PM to 6 PM, not 6 AM.
Get a tenant of your own
Sign up for a Microsoft 365 developer tenant. You cannot learn administration by reading, and a tenant you can break is the whole point.
Create 25 users slowly, then fast
Add them through the admin centre first so you see every field. Delete them, recreate them from a CSV with PowerShell. The contrast is the lesson.
Break authentication on purpose
Switch on a conditional access policy blocking legacy authentication, sign in with an old Outlook profile, watch it fail. Write down the exact error code.
Write the first runbook
One page: what the policy does, who it affects, how to roll it back. This document, not the certificate, makes an interviewer lean forward.
The honest checkpoint
Under 30 logged hours means your plan is nine months, not seven. Adjust the timeline rather than the ambition.

Which Certification Is Worth the Money, and Which Is Not Yet
Buy one exam. The stack of badges that looks impressive on LinkedIn reads as unfocused to a manager clearing sixty resumes before lunch.
For this target, AB-900 is the sensible single purchase. Microsoft lists it at USD 99 for a 45 minute exam and lists the credential as non expiring, which is unusual and worth having. One caution the marketing pages skip: the AB-900 beta sitting was not offered in India, Pakistan, Turkey or China, so confirm availability and local pricing before you plan month 5 around it. If it is not bookable from your region, PL-300 is the fallback with a known India price, listed at 4,865 rupees against a USD 165 standard rate.
AB-900 at a glance
A fundamentals exam, so it is a door rather than a destination. Price it accordingly.
Exam facts read from Microsoft and Microsoft Press listings on 28 September 2026. Confirm price and availability at booking.
360DT teaches that syllabus as a live Microsoft 365 Copilot and agent administration course across four weekends. The live format matters more here than in most subjects, because tenant configuration is the thing you get wrong silently on your own and fix in ninety seconds when someone is watching your screen. The full certifications overview shows where AB-900 sits against the Azure and Claude tracks.
What I would not buy yet
Do not make a generative AI certification your first credential out of BPO. The CCAO-F associate exam and the deeper agentic AI and RAG engineering track are excellent, and they are the right purchase in year two, once you hold an administration job and a tenant full of real agents to govern. Bought in month one they sit on a resume with no operational grounding underneath, and interviewers read that mismatch instantly.

BPO to IT Salary in India: What You Earn During and After the Switch
This is the section most switch guides get wrong by omission.
| Role | Entry band (0 to 2 years) | Experienced | Source, checked 28 Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPO customer service executive | 2.56 to 3.50 lakh (25th to 75th percentile) | About 3.03 lakh average across levels | Glassdoor India |
| BPO executive (monthly basis) | 12,861 to 35,467 per month | Bengaluru reported top city at 51,160 per month | Indeed India |
| Customer care executive | Base 2.36 to 3.85 lakh | About 2.75 lakh average | PayScale India |
| Technical support engineer | 2.10 to 2.90 lakh for freshers | About 7.2 lakh average; 4.1 lakh median CTC | Indeed India; Hyring India Salary Model 2026 |
| Senior Microsoft 365 administrator | Not separately reported | 15 to 20 lakh, about 18 lakh average | Glassdoor India |
Collection basis: advertised and self reported ranges aggregated by the named public sources and read on 28 September 2026. They describe what the market shows, not what any individual will be offered. Aggregates mix cities, company sizes and shift allowances, and monthly figures are gross.
The pay during the transition, honestly
Months 1 to 7 you earn what you earn now, minus the exam and the course. The first IT offer usually lands flat to 20 percent above current CTC. If you draw night shift allowance, watch that clause: a day shift service desk role at a nominally higher CTC can put less money in your account than the night process you left. Ask for the allowance breakup in writing before you accept.
The compounding starts later. With 18 to 24 months of administration behind you and a credential you actually use at work, you apply as an experienced hire rather than a switcher. Different queue, different numbers. That second move is where people commonly report the change they were hoping for on the first.
A Transition Walkthrough, Start to Finish
Assembled from typical market paths and the pay data above. Not a real named individual, not a 360DT student, and not an outcome anyone should expect.
Starting point. A 27 year old on a US voice process at a Pune BPO, four years in, about 3.4 lakh including night allowance, 6:30 PM to 3:30 AM. Commerce graduate. Clean written English, comfortable in Zendesk, builds the team's weekly quality deck in Excel.
What got added. Months 1 to 3: a free developer tenant and roughly 100 hours on identity, Exchange Online and Teams administration. Month 4: PowerShell, to the level of exporting licensed users without MFA. Month 5: AB-900. Month 6: a resume rewritten in IT vocabulary, where "handled 60 customer calls per shift" became "resolved 60 tier one incidents per shift against a 4 hour SLA in Zendesk, at 91 percent first contact resolution".
What went wrong. Two things, both predictable. The exam booking had to be rescheduled over regional availability, costing three weeks and most of the momentum. And months 1 and 2 produced almost no artefacts, because studying felt productive while nothing was being built, so month 3 went on redoing the lab properly.
Destination. Nine months rather than seven, a Microsoft 365 administration role at a mid size IT services firm, in the 4.5 to 6 lakh band that listings at that level advertise. After losing the night allowance, the real month one improvement was modest. Eighteen months on, with Entra ID and Copilot governance work on the CV, the market being applied into is the senior band in the table above, not the one they left.
What Usually Goes Wrong
- The timeline slips for boring reasons. A quarter end crunch, a sick parent, an exam slot unavailable in your region. Seven months is the plan; nine to ten is the common outcome, and people who budgeted seven treat month eight as failure and stop.
- Night shifts wreck consistency more than anything else. On a 24x7 rota, negotiate a fixed shift before you start studying, even at the cost of allowance. The allowance is worth less than the seven months.
- The pay cut is real and specific. It rarely shows up as a lower CTC. It shows up as the same CTC without the night differential you had been treating as salary.
- Chasing the title instead of the skill. 75 M365 Copilot listings on Indeed India, roughly 203 Office 365 administrator listings on Glassdoor India. Apply for the second, bring the first as a differentiator.
- Certificate without artefact. A fundamentals badge and an empty portfolio hits the same filter that screened out your BPO resume.
One more, said the way a colleague says it across a desk. Around month four you will meet someone on LinkedIn who did this in eight weeks and now works at a product company, and your plan will feel too slow. Do not rewrite it. That post is a highlight reel with the two failed attempts and the family money edited out, and people who abandon a working seven month plan for a fantasy eight week one tend to reach month twelve with nothing finished.

Frequently asked questions
How do I switch from BPO to IT jobs in India with no technical background?
Pick the adjacent door rather than the impressive one. Service desk, application support and Microsoft 365 administration all hire non engineering graduates, and your ticketing, SLA and customer communication experience maps straight onto them. Allow seven to ten months at 8 to 12 hours a week, build a free Microsoft 365 developer tenant you can break, take one certification rather than five, and rewrite your resume in IT vocabulary before you start applying.
What is the salary after moving from BPO to IT in India?
Glassdoor India reports BPO customer service near 3.03 lakh on average, middle of the range 2.56 to 3.50 lakh. Entry level technical support is advertised around 2.1 to 2.9 lakh for freshers, with Indeed India putting the all levels average near 7.2 lakh and the Hyring India Salary Model 2026 putting median CTC nearer 4.1 lakh. Most switchers see a flat to 20 percent change on the first move. These are advertised and reported market ranges, not guarantees.
Is BPO a good career in 2026, or should I leave?
The sector is not shrinking. nasscom's Strategic Review 2026 puts business process management at 59 billion dollars inside a 315 billion dollar industry, and Naukri listed over 166,000 BPO vacancies when we checked. The problem is the ceiling on a pure voice or transaction processing seat, and its exposure to automation. Staying is defensible if you are moving into process design, quality analytics or automation work inside BPM. Staying a pure voice agent for another five years is the risk.
Am I too old to switch from BPO to IT at 30 or 35?
Age is a smaller obstacle than expectation. Support and administration teams routinely hire switchers in their early thirties, because domain knowledge and composure are worth something. What causes trouble is applying for junior roles while holding out for a senior salary, or refusing a first role that is a sideways step in title. If you can accept a lateral first move, the runway from 32 is perfectly adequate.
Which certification should I take first to move from BPO to IT?
One, not five. For a Microsoft 365 administration target, AB-900 is the sensible purchase: Microsoft lists it at USD 99 for a 45 minute exam and lists the credential as non expiring. Confirm it is bookable in your region first, since the beta sitting was not offered in India. If it is not, PL-300 is the fallback at a published India price of 4,865 rupees. Pair whichever you choose with a lab you built, because the certificate alone does not move a screening filter.
Can I study for this while working night shifts?
Yes, if you plan around the shift instead of pretending it is not there. Block study hours in your actual awake window, not at 6 AM. Weekend evening live classes exist for this reason: 360DT runs its programs Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 11 PM IST, so you can train without resigning first. On a rotating 24x7 rota, negotiating a fixed shift is usually worth more than the allowance you give up.
Will I have to take a pay cut to move from BPO to IT?
Sometimes, and it usually arrives disguised. The headline CTC often holds or improves slightly, but a day shift role removes the night differential you had been treating as salary, so your in hand amount can fall. Ask for a written breakup of fixed pay, allowances and variable before accepting, and compare in hand to in hand rather than CTC to CTC.

If I were sitting in that Pune night shift with four years behind me, I would stop deciding between data science, cloud and cyber security. I would take the door closest to the desk I already sit at, build a Microsoft 365 tenant this week, and buy exactly one exam. Two years later that administration experience forks cleanly into AZ-305 and AZ-400, SAA-C03 or DP-700 and Microsoft Fabric, and a free webinar is a cheaper way to find out which bores you than four weeks of paid classes. Start with the Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administrator course, and let the second job be the one that changes the number.
