Career & Salary · 2026Accountant to Data Analyst in India 2026: The 6-Month Plan, What Transfers From Tally and Real Pay Bands
Moving from accountant to data analyst in India typically takes six to nine months of part-time study, and first analyst roles are advertised in the Rs 4 lakh to Rs 9 lakh band, often flat against a senior accounting salary. Reconciliation habits and Excel depth transfer. SQL, Power BI and statistics do not.
- Advertised bands run well above reported pay. Indeed India posts an average base of Rs 6,55,191 across 776 analyst salaries, against the Rs 14 lakh to Rs 22 lakh guides quote at five years.
- Your first offer may be flat. An accounts executive on Rs 4.5 lakh and a first-year analyst on Rs 5.5 lakh are close enough that one bad negotiation erases the gain.
- Finance domain is the edge. BFSI postings ask for reporting inside the BFSI domain, the one requirement a computer science fresher cannot fake.
- SQL before Python. Screening rounds test joins and window functions. Very few test pandas.
- PL-300 costs about Rs 4,800 plus taxes. It clears keyword filters. It does not replace three dashboards someone can click through.
It is the 28th and the ledger will not balance because someone posted a credit note to the wrong cost centre. You find it. You always find it. Then you rebuild the same MIS pack you built last month, email it to the finance head, and nobody asks what any of it means. That gap, between producing numbers and being asked what they mean, is why accountants look at analytics jobs.
Is the Accountant to Data Analyst Switch Realistic for You?
This works reliably for one profile and is painful for everyone else. It works if you build things in Excel rather than only typing into them. If you have written a SUMIFS across three sheets, or cleaned a bank statement with Power Query, you have the habit of mind the job needs and the rest is tooling. If your Excel work is entry into someone else's template, add six to eight weeks of groundwork first.
The second filter has nothing to do with skill: eight to ten hours a week, every week, for six months, through a year-end close. Weekend cohorts exist for this reason, and 360DT's live Data Analyst course runs Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 to 11:00 PM IST, outside office hours rather than against them.
Is Data Analytics a Good Career for Accountants?
Better than for most non-tech groups, for a reason unrelated to aptitude. Indian analytics work concentrates in finance-adjacent problems: collections ageing, branch profitability, provisioning, revenue leakage. Accenture's FP&A analyst listings ask for three to six years in FP&A, management reporting or commercial finance alongside Power BI, Excel, SAP and Tableau. You own the first half, and it is the half that takes years.
The three gates before you spend money
Fail gate one and add two months. Fail gate three and you should move internally first, not outward.
Gate thresholds reflect typical part-time study loads for analyst transitions, checked 26 October 2026.
What Transfers From Accounting and What Does Not
The most useful thing you own is not a skill, it is a reflex: you do not trust a number until it ties to something. Analysts who came through computer science will ship a dashboard where revenue sums to a figure nobody reconciled against the GL, and defend it because the query ran. You will not. Managers in BFSI analytics notice inside one interview.
| What you have now | How much it counts | What the role also needs |
|---|---|---|
| Reconciliation and tie-out discipline | High. Hard to teach, rare in freshers. | Nothing. Lead with this. |
| Advanced Excel: SUMIFS, pivots, Power Query | Medium to high, if you built rather than filled. | Power BI modelling and DAX |
| Finance domain: GST, AR ageing, provisioning | High for BFSI, fintech, NBFC, shared services. | Cohort, retention, unit economics vocabulary |
| Tally, Zoho Books, SAP FICO entry work | Low outside finance systems roles. | SQL: joins, GROUP BY, window functions, CTEs |
| Month-end deadline tolerance | Medium. Reads as reliability. | A repeatable refresh, not a rebuilt file |
| Commerce degree or CA Inter | Low as a filter, medium as a story. | One data credential to clear screening, usually PL-300 |
Basis: Indian analyst and FP&A postings reviewed 26 October 2026, including Accenture FP&A and Mumbai BFSI listings on Indeed.
One unpopular call: skip Tableau for now. Some listings name both, and Tableau is the better product in places. But Indian analyst hiring runs on Microsoft, PL-300 is what recruiters filter on, and your time is the scarce resource. You will lose a handful of Tableau-only shortlists in year one. Worth it.
Data Analyst Salary in India by Experience: What the Switch Actually Pays
Most switch guides quote the bands content marketers publish, which run high, rather than what postings and self-reported data show. Both are below, because the gap between them is the story.
| Stage | Advertised range | Typical reported pay | What sits at the top of the band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accounts executive, 1 to 3 yrs | Rs 2.5 L to Rs 2.7 L | Rs 2.3 L to Rs 3.1 L | Listed company, GST and audit exposure |
| Accounts executive, 4 to 8 yrs | Rs 3.4 L to Rs 3.7 L | Rs 3.1 L average | Team lead scope, SAP exposure |
| Data analyst, year 1 after switch | Rs 4 L to Rs 9 L | Rs 4 L to Rs 6 L | Live SQL round, one finance dashboard |
| Data analyst, 2 to 4 yrs | Rs 6 L to Rs 14 L | Rs 8.0 L avg at 4 to 5 yrs | Domain depth plus Python, GCC or captive |
| Senior analyst, 5 to 8 yrs | Rs 10 L to Rs 22 L | Rs 9.0 L avg at 5 to 6 yrs | Owning a reporting function |
| Analytics lead, 8 yrs plus | Rs 18 L to Rs 35 L | Employer-specific | Product or BFSI captive, team of 4 plus |
Basis, all checked 26 October 2026. Advertised ranges are bands quoted in public Indian listings and 2026 salary guides, including Mumbai postings at Rs 4 L to Rs 7.5 L for 2 to 6 years and Rs 10 L to Rs 20 L for 6 to 10 years. Reported figures come from aggregator datasets: Indeed India's posted average base of Rs 6,55,191 across 776 salaries, Payscale's 2026 accountant average of Rs 3,10,467, and AmbitionBox-derived analyst averages of Rs 8,02,846 at 4 to 5 years and Rs 9,03,979 at 5 to 6 years. These are what employers publish, not guarantees.
The advertised senior band runs to Rs 22 lakh while the reported average at that experience sits near Rs 9 lakh. Both are true. The gap is the distance between a Bengaluru product company and a tier-2 firm staffing a reporting desk, and which side you land on is decided more by employer type than by skill.
Where the pay curve actually steepens
The big step is not the switch. It is year 3 to year 5, once you own a reporting function.
Accounting, 4 to 8 yrs
Analyst, year 1
Analyst, year 3
Senior analyst, year 5

Accountant Salary in India 2026: The Baseline You Are Leaving
Be precise about your baseline before spending a rupee. Payscale's 2026 average for accountants in India is about Rs 3,10,467, 10th to 90th percentile Rs 1,51,000 to Rs 6,23,000. AmbitionBox-derived figures put accountants across 1 to 12 years at roughly Rs 3.4 lakh to Rs 3.7 lakh from around 2.3 lakh self-reported salaries, reaching Rs 5.2 lakh to Rs 5.7 lakh beyond 12 years. Sit with that last one: twelve years of accounting lands roughly where an analyst with three years is reported to be. That is the arbitrage, and why this is better done now than after another promotion cycle.
Accountant to Data Analyst: A 6-Month Switch Plan, Month by Month
SQL first because it is what gets tested, Power BI second because it is what gets shortlisted, Python last because it gets discussed and rarely examined at entry level.
| Month | Focus | Hrs/wk | Deliverable by month end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | SQL basics: SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, the four joins, NULL behaviour | 8 to 10 | 50 queries against an AR ledger you loaded yourself, not a tutorial database |
| Month 2 | SQL that interviews test: window functions, CTEs, self joins, date arithmetic | 8 to 10 | An ageing bucket query (0-30, 31-60, 61-90, 90 plus) written from memory |
| Month 3 | Power BI model: star schema, relationships, DAX. No visuals yet | 10 | A two-table model with 10 measures including a correct year-to-date |
| Month 4 | Power BI delivery plus PL-300 exam domains | 10 | Dashboard 1: collections and AR ageing for a fictional NBFC, published |
| Month 5 | Sit PL-300. Distributions, cohorts, significance | 8 | Exam attempted. Dashboard 2: branch profitability with a cohort view |
| Month 6 | Python for analysts (pandas, one chart library) and the job search | 8 to 10 | Dashboard 3, a rewritten CV, 20 applications sent |
Hours assume you already use Excel beyond data entry. If gate one above caught you, insert six to eight weeks of Power Query work before month 1.
Two deliberate choices. Your practice data is a ledger, not the Northwind sample database, because an interviewer goes three questions deep and the accountant who can explain why a credit note breaks a naive revenue sum beats the candidate who analysed bicycle sales. And PL-300 sits in month 5: the exam is a filter-clearing device that keeps for years, while learning the tool properly does not.
If you would rather have that sequence run for you, with someone to ask when a DAX measure returns blank, it is the shape of the 10-week Excel, SQL, Python and Power BI program, which includes PL-300 preparation and hands-on projects. A free webinar costs nothing and tells you whether the pace suits you.

Pay During a Career Change From Accounting to Data Analytics
For six to fourteen months your income does not move at all. You pay course fees, an exam fee of about Rs 4,800 plus taxes and ten weekend hours, against a flat salary, because you are still an accountant. Then the first offer arrives and it is often smaller than expected: entry analyst roles advertise from Rs 4 lakh, and an employer reads your analyst experience as zero whatever your eight years in accounts say.
Common outcomes are a lateral move at a similar number, or a step up of 10 to 25 per cent, short of the 20 to 35 per cent commonly quoted for same-function job changes. Staying is not free either: Deloitte's India Talent Outlook puts average 2026 increments at 9.1 per cent, and Aon's survey of more than 1,400 organisations lands on the same figure.
- It takes twelve months, not six. One year-end close at four hours a week instead of ten pushes everything out a quarter, and the usual response is to quit rather than re-plan.
- You take a real pay cut. Leaving a well-paid accounting seat for a first analyst role at a mid-size firm can mean accepting less and betting on year 3. Decide that with a spreadsheet, not enthusiasm.
- The title says analyst and the work is Excel. Plenty of advertised data analyst roles are MIS reporting with a Power BI licence attached. Ask which tool the last three deliverables used.
- A certificate with no portfolio goes nowhere. PL-300 clears filters. It does not survive "walk me through your data model".
One honest caveat. Analytics entry here is more crowded than the salary guides imply, every bootcamp produces Power BI certificate holders, and a manager reading 300 CVs cannot tell them apart. Your finance domain is the only thing that makes you legible in that pile. Hide the accounting past and you have discarded the advantage you arrived with.
From Accounts Executive to BFSI Data Analyst: An Illustrative Case Study
An illustrative composite built from typical market paths. Not a real named individual, and not a 360DT student outcome.
An accounts executive at a mid-size auto components manufacturer in Pune, four years in, Rs 4.2 lakh CTC. Vendor reconciliations in Tally, GST returns, and a monthly MIS pack that takes three days.
Months 1 to 2. SQL on a local Postgres instance loaded with two years of exported purchase ledger data. The first win is an ageing query replacing a two-hour Excel routine. Eight hours a week, mostly Sunday mornings.
Month 3. Stalls. Statutory audit lands and three weeks disappear. The recovery is dropping Python rather than keeping everything and finishing nothing.
Months 4 to 5. Dashboard one rebuilds that three-day MIS pack as a refreshable Power BI model, which gets noticed internally and yields a reference from a finance head who now understands the switch. PL-300 sat in month 5, about Rs 4,800 plus taxes.
Months 6 to 8. Forty applications, four responses, two first rounds, both bad: one interviewer asks for a window function on a whiteboard and gets a GROUP BY. Five more weeks of query practice closes it. The offer lands in month 8 from an NBFC analytics team in Pune at Rs 7.5 lakh, inside the Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9 lakh band such roles are commonly advertised at. The deciding factor was not the dashboard. It was explaining why their provisioning report double-counted restructured accounts, which nobody else shortlisted had noticed.
Eight months against a six-month plan. Rs 4.2 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh, with four months at zero income growth and real cash out.
What Goes Wrong: 4 Ways the Accounting to Analytics Switch Stalls
The four failure modes, in the order they hit
All four are planning errors rather than ability problems, which is why they are fixable in advance.
Starting with Python
It feels like the real skill, so it goes first. Month four arrives with no SQL and no dashboard, the two things screening rounds test.
SequencingTutorial data
Three projects on the same public retail dataset 50,000 other candidates used. Load a ledger, a GST register, a collections file.
PortfolioApplying only to analyst titles
MIS, reporting and FP&A analyst roles in BFSI are easier entries on the same tooling, and move to data analyst in 18 months from inside.
Search strategyQuoting a number too early
Answering "expected CTC" on the first call, before anyone has seen your dashboards, anchors the offer at your accounting salary plus 20 per cent.

Data Analyst Jobs for Commerce Graduates: Where to Apply and What to Say
Commerce graduates do get filtered out of some pipelines, and the filter is almost never the degree. It is the absence of a recognised data credential on a CV where every other line says finance. Target employers where your domain is the requirement, not a curiosity: Glassdoor India showed 5,467 open financial data analyst positions across India and 1,408 in Bengaluru alone when checked in 2026, and a Mumbai BFSI listing on Indeed asked for three to six years of reporting and dashboarding within BFSI, with SQL, Python, Power BI and Tableau.
The 10-week job search, after month 6
Applications are the last step. Everything before week 7 is making the CV survive a filter.
Publish the portfolio
Three dashboards live on Power BI service, each with a two-line note on the question it answers. Deliverable: three URLs you can paste into a form.
Rewrite the CV, then the LinkedIn headline
Data skills above finance operations, each accounting line restated as dataset, tool and cycle time. Headline: "Finance operations to data analytics, SQL and Power BI, PL-300". Deliverable: SQL and Power BI in the top third of page one.
Twenty warm approaches
Ex-colleagues now in FP&A, MIS or analytics at banks, NBFCs and captives. Ask their reporting stack, not for a job. Deliverable: five conversations, two referrals.
Apply in volume, to the right titles
Data analyst, MIS analyst, reporting analyst, FP&A analyst, business analyst in BFSI. Deliverable: 40 to 60 applications, four to eight first rounds.
Handle the CTC question
Deflect once, then give a range anchored on the role, not your old salary. Deliverable: a script you have said out loud five times.
Sequence reflects the application funnel implied by openings counted on Glassdoor India in 2026, checked 26 October 2026.
The script, because vagueness here is expensive. When a recruiter asks your expected CTC on the first call: "I am moving from finance operations into analytics, so my current number reflects the old role rather than this one. Could you tell me the band budgeted for this position, and I will tell you honestly whether it works?" If they insist, give a range floored on the advertised band, not on your accounting salary. Three resume lines to adapt today:
- Rebuilt a 3-day manual MIS pack as a refreshable Power BI model over 2 years of purchase ledger data, cutting preparation to under 4 hours.
- Wrote SQL ageing and cohort queries (window functions, CTEs) against a 1,200-account receivables dataset to surface collections risk by bucket.
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300), 2026. Data modelling, DAX, report design.
Where the analyst role leads next
Worth knowing now, because it changes which first job you accept. The two well-trodden routes out are pipeline work (Microsoft Fabric, DP-700, the Fabric data engineering path) and retrieval and agent work, which the AI Engineer course covers and which advertises the widest bands in Indian tech. A quieter third suits finance people: Copilot and agent administration, where the AB-900 track sits closer to governance than code. The certifications overview has the exam codes side by side.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the accountant to data analyst switch really take in India?
Six months of study at eight to ten hours a week gets most people interview-ready, and the search adds two to four months. Plan for eight to ten months end to end. At four hours a week the honest number is twelve to fourteen, and the people who quit are usually the ones who planned for six.
Is data analytics a good career for accountants?
One of the better fits among non-tech switches, because much of Indian analytics work is finance-adjacent: collections, ageing, branch profitability, provisioning. Public FP&A and BFSI postings routinely ask for finance domain experience alongside Power BI and SQL. The caveat is that entry is crowded and the first offer is often flat.
Will I have to take a pay cut to move from accounting into analytics?
Sometimes, yes. Entry analyst roles are advertised from around Rs 4 lakh, and an employer counts your analyst experience as zero regardless of your years in accounts. Expect a lateral move or a step up of roughly 10 to 25 per cent, below the 20 to 35 per cent commonly quoted for same-function changes.
Do I need Python to get a data analyst job, or is SQL and Power BI enough?
SQL and Power BI are enough for most entry analyst roles in India, and they are what screening rounds test. Python appears on job descriptions far more often than in entry-level interviews. Learn it in month 6 and spend the hours you save on window functions.
Am I too old to switch from accounting to data analytics at 35?
No, but the route changes. Applying to entry analyst postings against 24-year-olds is the wrong move. Target MIS, reporting and FP&A analyst roles in BFSI where your domain years are priced, or move internally into your company's reporting function and switch outward with an analyst title already on the CV.
Is the PL-300 certification enough to get shortlisted for data analyst jobs in India?
Enough to clear keyword filters, which matters when every other line of your CV says finance. Not enough to survive the interview. The India exam fee is roughly Rs 4,800 plus taxes, good value for a filter-clearing credential, but pair it with three published dashboards you can be questioned about.
Here is what I would do in your position. Give it four weekends before spending anything: install Postgres, export two years of whatever ledger you can access, write queries against it. If those weekends felt like relief rather than homework, you have your answer, and the next step is running the SQL, Power BI and PL-300 sequence with a cohort instead of alone at 11pm, which is what the Data Analyst course is built for and what a free demo class shows you in an hour. If they felt like a second job you resented, that is useful too, and far cheaper to learn now than in month five.
