Career & Salary · 2026Return to Work After a Career Break in IT (India 2026): A 7-Month Restart Plan and Real Pay Bands
To return to work after a career break in IT in 2026, plan for about seven months: three to rebuild one hard skill, two to ship portfolio proof, two to apply. Naukri lists 10,376 career break roles in India, and restart offers are typically advertised between Rs 4 and 12 LPA depending on your pre-break experience.
- Seven months is the honest number at 10 to 12 hours a week. Anyone promising 90 days is pricing the study plan and ignoring the job search.
- Pick one destination role, not three. Analytics is the most forgiving re-entry from a business or QA background: SQL and Power BI are learnable in months, and the hiring volume is large.
- Restart offers usually land one band below where you left. Model the drop, and recover it in the second job rather than the first.
- Returnships are worth applying to, but they are not the plan. TCS Rebegin asks for two years of continuous prior experience, and LinkedIn India showed only 288 career break jobs this month.
- The gap is not your weakest point in the interview. Stale tooling is. Expect more questions about your SQL than about your break.
You open Naukri on a Tuesday afternoon, filter for analyst roles, and the first thing you notice is not the salary. It is "immediate joiner, currently employed" in the eligibility line of half the listings. You stopped working in 2021, your Power BI is from 2020, and your SQL was never tested outside your own company's reporting tool. The question is not whether you can do the work. It is whether anyone will let you prove it, and how many unpaid months sit between now and that chance.
The volume is there: Naukri's India page for data analyst roles showed 26,108 vacancies when checked in September 2026, and its analytics category showed 144,912. The shortcut is not.
The three numbers that frame a restart
Volume is not the constraint. Proof of current skill is.
Counts are what the job boards displayed on 24 September 2026 and move daily. India Skills Report 2026 figure as reported in coverage of that report.
Is a Restart Into Analytics Realistic for You Right Now?
Three things decide this, and none of them is your age.
Hours. Ten to twelve focused hours a week is the floor. Below that you are still stuck on joins in month five and the plan stretches past a year, which is long enough that most people quit. With five hours, warm up on Excel and SQL for twelve weeks and decide again then.
What you did before. A manual QA engineer, an operations lead who lived in Excel, a finance executive who built the monthly MIS: all carry what analytics hiring wants, which is business context. Someone who can say "I know why the collections report is wrong on the 3rd of every month" beats someone with one more Python library. If your old role had no data contact, add three months.
How the break reads. Caregiving, health, relocation, a failed startup: all normal, all explainable. What hurts is a break you have not used in its final six months. Interviewers score recency, not the gap.
Which restart track fits you
Answer the hours question honestly before anything else, because it sets the timeline.
Track logic based on Indian returnship eligibility rules published by the employers named below, checked 24 September 2026.
One opinion I will defend: do not start with Python. Start with SQL and Power BI. Python is what people pick because it feels like real programming, and what most often leaves a returner six months in with nothing hireable. SQL plus a dashboard gets interviews; add Python in month five. The trade-off is a year of weakness on the data science end of the market, and it buys back unpaid months.
How to Return to Work After a Career Break in IT in 2026: The 7-Month Plan
The running example below is a composite: a Pune manual-QA engineer, four years at a services company, last worked early 2022, roughly twelve free hours a week, wants an analyst role.
| Month | What you learn | Hours a week | The artefact that ends the month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Excel properly: XLOOKUP, pivots, Power Query. SQL SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY. | 10 | A cleaned 50,000-row dataset that refreshes in one click. |
| 2 | SQL joins, subqueries, window functions. PostgreSQL running locally. | 12 | 15 queries answering business questions, in a public GitHub repo. |
| 3 | Power BI data model, relationships, DAX measures, row-level security. | 12 | Project 1 published: a three-page dashboard on a public Indian dataset. |
| 4 | PL-300 objectives end to end. Returnship applications if you qualify. | 12 | Two practice exams above 750 and five returnship applications sent. |
| 5 | Sit PL-300. Python basics: pandas, matplotlib, one statistical test. | 10 | PL-300 result, and project 2 scoped in a written problem statement. |
| 6 | Project 2 build. Resume rewrite. 20 SQL questions answered out loud, timed. | 10 | Project 2 published with a README readable in 90 seconds. |
| 7 | Applications, referrals, interview loops, negotiation prep. | 12 | 40 applications, 10 warm referrals, first interview loops. |
Plan built for a candidate with prior work experience and business context, studying 10 to 12 hours a week. A returner with no prior data contact should add roughly three months, mostly in months 1 and 2.
Month 7 is where the plan hurts. Learning has a syllabus; applying does not. You will send forty applications, hear back from four, and want to go back to studying because studying feels like progress.

The visibility ladder, month 3 onward
Skills and visibility are separate jobs. Most returners only do the first.
Quiet restart
Change the LinkedIn headline to your target role, not your old one, and set the career break field so recruiter filters stop discarding you silently.
First public proof
Publish project 1 with a write-up of the business question, not the tool list. One post on what surprised you in the data beats ten about finishing a course.
Reconnect deliberately
Message 20 former colleagues individually with one specific ask: are you hiring analysts, or do you know who is? Vague notes get warm replies and no interviews.
Apply at volume
Forty applications minimum across open listings, returnships and referrals. Track date and channel in a sheet, because the channel that works will surprise you.
Interview and negotiate
Expect three to five rounds including a SQL test and a case. Fix your band before the first HR call so you never name a number under pressure.
Sequence reflects typical Indian analyst hiring loops observed in listings and returnship programme descriptions, checked 24 September 2026.
Skills Gap: What You Already Have vs What the Target Role Needs
Returners undersell themselves because they audit what they have forgotten instead of what transfers. Run it the other way.
| What you already have | What the analyst job needs | Gap size | How you close it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intermediate Excel, formulas and pivots | Power Query, data modelling, DAX measures | Medium | Weeks 1 to 12 above. Power Query is the fastest confidence win available to you. |
| Reading requirements and finding the edge case | Turning a vague business question into a metric definition | Small, transfers directly | Write the question above every query you save. |
| Test case design, defect triage, regression discipline | Data quality checks, reconciliation, source-to-target validation | Small | Rename it on your resume. QA discipline is data quality work in different vocabulary. |
| Basic SQL against an internal reporting database | Window functions, CTEs, query performance, five-table joins | Large | Month 2, then 20 SQL interview questions out loud, timed. |
| Stakeholder updates and status reporting | Defending a dashboard to a business owner who disagrees with it | Small | Record yourself explaining project 1 in three minutes. Watch it once. |
| Nothing on cloud or pipelines | Listed as desirable, rarely tested at entry level | Ignore for now | Skip it in job one. Add it later through a Microsoft Fabric data engineering programme. |
Gap sizes reflect what Indian analyst listings on Naukri and LinkedIn tested for in screening rounds as advertised in September 2026, not a formal survey.
The certification question, answered honestly
You need one certification that matches a tool the listing names, which for Indian analytics is PL-300. K21 Academy's 2026 PL-300 guide lists Microsoft's India price for that exam at about Rs 4,865, against roughly $165 in US pricing. Its value to a returner is not the badge; it is that the objectives force you through DAX and data modelling you would otherwise skim. 360DT's live Data Analyst course covers Excel, SQL, Python and Power BI with PL-300 preparation inside the same 10-week track, on Saturday and Sunday evenings, so you can study before telling anyone you are restarting.
Not worth your money in month one: a second cloud certification, a data science specialisation, or anything with "advanced" in the title. The certifications overview maps what each credential is for.
Return to Work After a Career Break in IT: What the Restart Actually Pays
Here is the number nobody tells you kindly: you will probably re-enter one band below where you left, and the first offer is not where you will stay.
| Your profile before the break | Realistic restart role | Advertised range for that role | What usually happens to the offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 years, break of 2 years or more | Data analyst, reporting analyst, MIS analyst | Rs 3.5 to 6 LPA | Priced close to fresher level. Certification and two projects are what lift you inside the band. |
| 3 to 5 years, break of 2 to 3 years | Data analyst, senior analyst at a services firm | Rs 6 to 12 LPA | Commonly one band below your pre-break CTC. Recoverable in the second move, usually within 18 to 24 months. |
| 6 to 9 years, break of 2 to 4 years | Senior analyst, analytics lead, BI developer | Rs 12 to 20 LPA | Depends heavily on whether your domain knowledge is still current. Banking and insurance hold value best. |
| Any profile, entering via a returnship | Structured programme, then conversion | Stipend during the programme, then the band above | Programmes typically run 12 weeks to 6 months with a defined conversion decision at the end. |
Collection basis: ranges reflect advertised salary bands for analyst roles on Indian job boards and salary aggregators reviewed on 24 September 2026, cross-checked against multiple 2026 India salary guides. These are advertised ranges, not guarantees, and metro postings in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi NCR sit at the upper end.
How the band typically moves after a restart
The first offer is the price of re-entry. The second one is the price of your work.

What actually moves you to the top of the band
Domain, not tools. An analyst who understands insurance claims, retail supply chains or lending collections is priced differently from one who understands Power BI, because the second is replaceable in six weeks and the first is not. A break does not erase domain knowledge. If you spent four years in QA for a banking client, apply to banking analytics first and say "reconciliation" in the first two minutes.
The second lever is the one returners skip: defending a number under pressure. Rehearse it once. Someone senior says your dashboard is wrong, and you walk them through the source table, the filter, the join grain and where the difference comes from, without apologising. That five minutes is worth more than the certificate.
Returnship Programs in India: Who Runs Them and Who Qualifies
Returnship programs in India are real, structured, and much smaller than the internet implies. The established ones: TCS Rebegin, which asks for two years of continuous prior work experience and requires you to state the duration and reason for each break; Amazon Rekindle, for people returning after twelve months or more away; Tata SCIP, open across Tata Group companies to women with at least two years of prior continuous experience; plus tracks at Goldman Sachs India, Cognizant and Accenture. The shape is consistent: twelve weeks to six months of real work, with mentorship, refresher training and a conversion decision at the end.
Now the honest part. LinkedIn India showed 288 jobs under its career break search in September 2026, and Glassdoor India listed 61 roles tagged for women returning from a break in August 2026. Against 26,108 open analyst roles, that is a narrow door. Apply where you qualify, then spend most of your effort on ordinary listings where nobody is filtering for your break at all.
- The timeline slips past a year. The cause is rarely difficulty. It is interruption: a sick child, three weeks lost, and the SQL is gone. Build a recovery week into month 3 and month 6 instead of pretending it will not happen.
- You take a pay cut you did not model. If you left at 8 LPA and the first offer is 5.5, that sits inside the normal range. Decide your floor in advance, not on a call with a recruiter.
- Entry is harder than the course content suggests. Junior analyst hiring is crowded, and plenty of listings that say "0 to 2 years" want someone currently employed. Expect a lower reply rate than a working candidate with identical skills.
- You study forever because studying feels safe. Applying is where the rejection lives, so that is where procrastination goes. Month 8 and still "not quite ready" is avoidance, not a skills problem.
How to Explain a Career Gap in an Interview and on Your Resume
Short, factual, forward. Nobody wants the full story, and nobody is judging it as harshly as you expect.
For the first HR call: "I took a planned break from early 2022 for family caregiving. I started rebuilding for analytics in February, cleared PL-300 in July, and published two projects on public Indian datasets. I am looking for an analyst role where reporting accuracy actually matters." Then stop. The pause is what makes it land.
The resume version. Do not hide the gap with creative date formatting. ATS parsing and a hiring manager both find it in four seconds, and the concealment reads worse than the gap. Put it in as a line:
Career break (Feb 2022 to Feb 2026) · Planned break for family caregiving. Returned to structured study in Feb 2026: Microsoft PL-300 certified (Jul 2026), two published analytics projects in SQL and Power BI, 10 to 12 hours weekly across a live weekend programme.
And one line for the QA years, rewritten so an analytics recruiter reads it correctly: "Designed and executed data validation and reconciliation checks across 3 upstream systems for a banking client, owning the source-to-target test suite."
The negotiation script for the restart offer
Counter with the band, not your history: "Thank you, that is a fair starting point. Based on what I am seeing advertised for this role with PL-300 and the project work I have shown you, I was modelling something closer to X. Is there room to get there, or is there flexibility on the review timeline instead?" The second half matters. If the base is fixed, a written six-month review is worth more than twenty thousand rupees you will not get anyway.
A Composite Restart, Start to Finish
Illustrative composite built from typical market paths in India. Not a real named person and not a 360DT outcome claim.
Starting point. Pune. Four years as a manual QA engineer at a services company on a banking account, last drawn CTC Rs 7.2 LPA, stopped working February 2022 for caregiving. Skills on paper: test case design, JIRA, intermediate Excel, some SQL against an internal reporting tool.
Months 1 to 5. Ten hours a week, mostly after 9 PM. Power Query first, then SQL joins and window functions against a local PostgreSQL copy of a public dataset. Project 1 was a three-page Power BI dashboard on published banking data. PL-300 cleared in month 5 after a failed practice attempt at 680. Five returnship applications produced one interview and no offer, which is a normal ratio, not a signal.
The obstacle. Month 6 was almost lost: three weeks of family illness, no study, and coming back felt like starting over. What saved it was the recovery week in the plan and a fixed weekend class slot that made the commitment external rather than private.
Where it landed. Months 7 to 9 produced 52 applications, 11 replies, four interview loops and two offers: a mid-size analytics services firm at Rs 6 LPA, and a banking captive at Rs 7.5 LPA with a written six-month review, reached through a referral. Nine months end to end, not seven, and back to roughly the pre-break number. Banking domain knowledge decided the second offer, not the certificate.
Pay During the Transition, and the Part Nobody Budgets For
Seven to nine months without salary is the real cost. The cash outlay is small: PL-300 at roughly Rs 4,865, a structured course in the Rs 12,999 to Rs 24,999 range, and almost nothing else, since PostgreSQL, Power BI Desktop and public datasets are free. The expensive part is the months.
If your household cannot absorb that, change the shape rather than the goal. Freelance MIS or reporting work through months 4 to 9 keeps money coming in and puts a current line on the resume that ends the gap before you apply full time. Two months of freelance dashboard work changes how the break reads more than two more months of study will.
One caveat the analytics marketing skips. Entry-level analyst work in India is often less analytical than the syllabus suggests: maintaining existing reports, chasing a mismatched number across three systems, rebuilding somebody's Excel sheet in Power BI. Want interesting work on day one and you get about eighteen months of disappointment. Want a durable, learnable career with a large hiring market and a path into data engineering or AI engineering later, and the grind is a fair price.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to return to work after a career break in IT?
Budget seven months at 10 to 12 hours a week and plan for nine. Five months are skill building and certification; the last two or three are applications and interview loops, which is the part almost everyone underestimates.
Will I have to take a pay cut after a career break?
Commonly yes, on the first offer. Returners frequently re-enter one band below their pre-break CTC, and analyst roles at that level are typically advertised between Rs 6 and 12 LPA for 3 to 5 years of prior experience. Most of the gap is recovered at the next move.
Am I too old to restart a tech career at 38?
Age is not what filters you out; recency is. Interviewers spend far more time on your SQL and projects than on your birth year. What changes is positioning: at 38 you compete against candidates ten years younger, so domain depth is the card you play.
How do I explain a 4 year career gap in an interview?
Three sentences: the reason, the dates, and what you have done in the last six months. Then move to the work. Do not hide the gap with vague date formatting; it is found in seconds and the concealment reads worse than the break.
Are returnship programs in India worth applying to?
Yes, but as one channel out of three. TCS Rebegin, Amazon Rekindle, Tata SCIP and the Goldman Sachs India returnship are real and structured, typically 12 weeks to 6 months with a conversion decision at the end. The volume is small: LinkedIn India showed 288 career break jobs in September 2026.
Do I need a certification to restart, or is a portfolio enough?
A portfolio gets you through the interview; a certification gets you past the filter. Both matter for a returner, because a recruiter scanning a four-year gap wants dated proof of current skill. One certification matching the tool the listing names, plus two published projects.
Can I restart without quitting my part-time or freelance work?
Yes, and you probably should. Freelance MIS or reporting work keeps income flowing and puts a current line on the resume, which changes how the break reads. Weekend-evening study formats exist so learning does not compete with paid hours.
Which role is easiest to re-enter after a break in IT?
For most returners, data or reporting analyst work: the tooling is learnable in months and Naukri's India page showed 26,108 open analyst vacancies in September 2026. From infrastructure or service desk, cloud engineering is the shorter hop.
What I Would Do in Your Position
Pick analytics, pick PL-300, and pick a fixed weekly slot you will not move for anyone. Start applying in month four, before you feel ready, because ready is not a state that arrives on its own and the market teaches faster than the syllabus. Expect the first offer to be lower than you want and treat it as the price of re-entry, not a verdict on your worth. The people who get stuck are not the ones who studied less. They are the ones who studied for eleven months and applied for one.
Analytics is not the only door. From infrastructure or support, cloud is the shorter hop and the AWS Solutions Architect and DevOps track maps to the certifications those listings name; with recent development skills, the AI Engineer course on RAG and agent work beats restarting as a generalist; and in Microsoft-heavy corporates, Copilot administration is unusually low-competition because the role is newer than the managers hiring for it. The free webinars and a demo class cost an evening if you want to test the fit first.
For the analytics route itself, the Data Analyst course runs live on Saturday and Sunday evenings over 10 weeks, with the current batch starting 27 September 2026, and covers the Excel, SQL, Python and Power BI ground this plan assumes.
