AI Engineer Jobs in Toronto 2026: Posted Pay Bands, Who Is Hiring and the Route In
AI engineer jobs in Toronto pay roughly CA$105,000 to CA$185,000 for mid and senior roles, and since 1 January 2026 Ontario postings must show the band. Glassdoor counted about 1,119 open Toronto AI engineer roles in September 2026. Bay Street banks, Cohere and the MaRS cluster do most of the hiring.
- Toronto is the one big tech market where you read the pay before you apply. Ontario's posting rules took effect 1 January 2026 for employers with 25 or more staff, and a range cannot exceed CA$50,000.
- The CA$200,000 exemption is where transparency stops, so staff and principal postings go quiet on money.
- Two engines drive hiring: Bay Street banks putting AI into regulated workflows, and a product cluster led by Cohere, Waabi and Ada.
- OSFI Guideline E-23 comes into force on 1 May 2027, pulling AI models into formal model risk management. That date is the city's strongest demand signal.
- Evaluation and audit skills beat model-training skills here. Toronto hires people who can prove a system behaves.
You open a Toronto job posting and the number is sitting right there under the title. CA$120,000 to CA$130,000. No recruiter screen, no "competitive". That is new as of January, and it should change how you job hunt here, because the band tells you what the role is worth before you spend an evening on a take-home test.
Why AI Engineer Jobs in Toronto Look Different in 2026
Ontario's job posting rules under the Working for Workers package took effect on 1 January 2026. Employers with 25 or more employees on the day they post must state expected compensation or a range, that range cannot span more than CA$50,000, and the requirement drops away above CA$200,000. The same package forces employers to disclose when AI screens candidates, bans Canadian experience requirements, and requires interviewed candidates to hear back within 45 days.
Read that as a job seeker, not an HR compliance item. You get the band, you get told when a machine reads your resume first, and you cannot be rejected for lacking Canadian experience. It makes Toronto tech jobs in 2026 readable in a way they were not last year, and it beats Bengaluru, Dubai or Singapore, where you still negotiate blind.

AI Engineer Salary in Toronto 2026: What the Posted Bands Say
Aggregator averages for AI engineer salary in Toronto disagree wildly. Indeed's Toronto page in October 2026 banded advertised pay from CA$68,000 to CA$228,000, so wide it tells you nothing. Levels.fyi is more useful: median total compensation of CA$161,534 for machine learning engineers in the Greater Toronto Area, with quartiles at CA$128,000 and CA$207,000.
Postings are the real signal now that they carry numbers. In today's snapshots BMO listed an AI Engineer role at CA$70,000 to CA$150,000, TELUS one at CA$120,000 to CA$130,000, Kaseya a Staff Applied ML Engineer at CA$220,000 to CA$280,000, and a Klue senior role on Wellfound showed CA$140,000 to CA$230,000. Notice the shape: the bank posts a wide early-career band, the telco a narrow mid band, and both top numbers sit above the CA$200,000 line where disclosure was optional anyway.

Which Companies Hire AI Engineers in Toronto, and Where They Sit
Demand splits into two engines that want different people, and the AI companies in Toronto worth applying to sit on one side or the other. Choose deliberately: a Bay Street resume reads as process-heavy to a startup, and a startup resume reads as ungovernable to a bank.
Bay Street: banks and insurers
All of Canada's big five banks are headquartered in Toronto, and their AI groups are the largest single block of mid and senior roles here. TD Bank Group's AI centre of excellence, Layer 6, works out of the MaRS Centre on University Avenue alongside CIFAR, and BMO was advertising an AI Engineer position today. What they are buying is E-23 readiness: a documented inventory of every model in use, with evaluation and an audit trail. That is engineering, not research.
AI companies in Toronto: the product cluster
Cohere is the anchor. Wikipedia lists it as co-headquartered in Toronto and San Francisco with 450 or more employees as of 2025, and one careers aggregator showed 111 open roles in early October 2026. Around it sit Waabi, building one model to drive both autonomous trucks and robotaxis, plus Ada and Voiceflow in the agent space. The Vector Institute at the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus listed a Senior Software Developer, Machine Learning role today.
Machine learning engineer jobs in Toronto are not the same roles
Machine learning engineer jobs in Toronto skew toward training, feature pipelines and experiment tracking, posted inside bank risk and fraud teams. AI engineer roles skew toward retrieval, orchestration and evaluating someone else's model, and that group has the shorter runway for a switcher. Geography matters too, because hybrid policies here are real: bank AI teams sit around Bay, King and Front, MaRS on University holds Layer 6 and CIFAR, Waterfront and Liberty Village hold the product startups, and out along the 401 corridor to Mississauga and Markham sit the insurers, where the commute runs opposite to everyone else.

What a Toronto AI Engineering Job Actually Involves
Most course syllabuses get this city wrong. The interesting constraint in a Toronto AI role is almost never the model. It is that the data cannot leave the country, every call must be explainable to a regulator, and someone will ask you in eighteen months what the system did on a specific Tuesday.
OSFI published its final Guideline E-23 on 11 September 2025, effective 1 May 2027, requiring federally regulated institutions to track every model in use or recently decommissioned, vendor models included. On 13 July 2026 it followed with a bulletin on generative and agentic AI for technology, cyber security and operational resilience, drawing on guidelines B-13, E-21 and B-10. That bulletin is non-binding sound practice, but it is the document your interviewer has read.

The two accent boxes are the ones that get you hired here.

The eval harness and model inventory are the model risk side of the job, which the MLOps Engineer course built around Azure AI-300 drills live. In-region deployment is a cloud architecture question, and the AZ-305 and AZ-400 architect track is the shortest route to the vocabulary Canadian banks use.
Skills and Certifications Toronto Employers Name
Here is the opinion, trade-off stated. Do not start a part-time Master's for an applied AI engineer role in Toronto. It costs two years and the posted bands show no mid-level premium for it, where the differentiator is a shipped system with evaluation numbers attached. It does pay off for Vector Institute research engineering or a bank's quant risk team. What I would not skip is anything teaching you to evidence a model's behaviour, because E-23 turned that into a line item with a date on it.
| What Toronto postings name | Why it matters here | Where to prove it |
|---|---|---|
| RAG and agent orchestration | Bank use cases are document-heavy, so retrieval quality is the product | Azure AI-103 generative AI track |
| Model evaluation and monitoring | E-23 requires documented evaluation of every model | MLOps Engineer, AI-300 |
| Deployment in a Canadian region | Data residency expectations on regulated workloads | AWS SAA-C03 and DOP-C02 |
| Agent architecture and safety | The July 2026 OSFI bulletin is about agentic systems | Claude CCAR-F architect foundations |
| Data platform fundamentals | Bank AI projects stall on the pipeline, not the model | Microsoft Fabric DP-700 and DP-900 |
| Copilot governance | Copilot rollouts face the same audit expectations | Microsoft 365 Copilot AB-900 |

How to Break Into AI Engineer Jobs in Toronto From a Non-AI Start
Take an illustrative case. Priya is a backend developer with four years on Java and SQL at a mid-size insurer's IT office in Mississauga, on about CA$95,000, with thirty spare hours a month. She will not out-publish a Vector Institute postdoc, and she does not need to. What she has that a graduate does not is four years of knowing how her employer's claims documents are actually structured, which is exactly what a retrieval system needs.
So her shortest path is internal: build one thing at work from documents she already has access to, instrument it with an evaluation set, write the model card, then apply outward with that as the centrepiece. This is illustrative, not a real learner's result, but it is the pattern that works here.

Switch year
Year 2
Year 3 to 4
Year 5
Illustrative scenario built from the bands above, 26 October 2026. Not an outcome claim.
A 90-day plan that fits thirty hours a month
Weeks 1 to 4: pick one document set at work, build a retrieval service over it, write twenty evaluation questions with known answers. Weeks 5 to 8: add citation output, measure how often answers are grounded, log every call. Weeks 9 to 12: write a two-page model card covering data sources, limitations and failure modes, then rebuild your resume around that artefact and apply to five postings banded one level above your pay. From a non-technical start, the CCAO-F foundations prep course is the cheaper four-week entry point, and a free webinar tells you within an hour whether this work suits you.
One honest caveat. If your background is purely analytics and you have never shipped a service, the gap you are crossing is software engineering, not AI. Three months on prompt technique will not close it, and the Power BI and PL-300 analyst track fits better if you would rather deepen analytics than cross into engineering.
Toronto Tech Jobs 2026: Permits, Rent and What the Pay Really Buys
Moving from outside Canada, the Global Talent Stream is the route your employer uses. Expedited LMIA processing runs around 10 business days against 48 to 60 standard, and IRCC's two-week work permit target is a service goal, not a guarantee. One catch: NOC 21311 covers computer engineers and explicitly excludes software engineers and designers, so many roles labelled "AI engineer" land under a different code. Check the code on the actual offer against the Global Talent Occupations List.
On rent the direction of travel is finally helpful. liv.rent put the City of Toronto average unfurnished one-bedroom at CA$1,969 in October 2026, down 3.7% year on year, and Zumper showed CA$2,099 on 23 October 2026. TRREB's Q4 2025 leased figure was higher at CA$2,421, which is the gap between asking rents and what people sign. Budget CA$2,100 to CA$2,400 downtown, less along the GO lines, and remember Ontario tax sits on top of federal. Also read: Tech Jobs in Vancouver 2026.
What Usually Goes Wrong Here
Someone who hires for a Toronto AI platform team put it bluntly: most rejections are self-inflicted, and three of these four land before anyone reads your code.
Four avoidable ways to lose a Toronto AI offer
All four are about reading the market, not technical depth.
Quoting Bay Area numbers
Toronto is not San Francisco in a weaker currency. Ask for the top of the posted band and justify it; ask 40% above and the call ends.
Anchor to the postingChasing only the silent postings
Roles above CA$200,000 are exempt from disclosure, so unbanded postings are mostly the ones you are least likely to win. Spend applications on banded mid and senior roles.
Read the exemptionIgnoring the AI screening notice
Ontario postings must now say when AI screens applicants. Where the notice appears, mirror the posting's literal phrasing. Where it does not, write for a human.
Two resume versionsA portfolio of notebooks
Ten tutorial notebooks lose to one deployed service with an evaluation set, a cost figure and a written failure analysis. Governance-minded employers read the second.
One artefact, done wellBased on Ontario posting rules in force since 1 January 2026, checked 26 October 2026.
- Toronto is not the Bay Area, and the pretending is tiresome. The senior market here is a few thousand roles deep, and one anchor company carries much of the product-side story.
- Posted bands stop helping at the top. Disclosure ends at CA$200,000, so the roles where negotiation matters most have no published anchor.
- The E-23 wave is tied to a compliance date. Build the engineering skill, not a resume that only makes sense while one guideline is being implemented.

Frequently asked questions
What do AI engineer jobs in Toronto pay in 2026?
Bands advertised on 26 October 2026 run roughly CA$75,000 to CA$100,000 junior, CA$105,000 to CA$145,000 mid and CA$140,000 to CA$185,000 senior. Levels.fyi puts median total compensation at CA$161,534 for Greater Toronto Area machine learning engineers. Advertised ranges, not guarantees.
Do Toronto job postings have to show the salary?
Yes, for most. Since 1 January 2026, Ontario employers with 25 or more employees must state expected compensation or a range in public postings, and that range cannot exceed CA$50,000. The rule does not apply above CA$200,000, which is why senior postings show no number.
Which companies hire AI engineers in Toronto?
The big five banks headquartered here are the largest block, with TD's Layer 6 at the MaRS Centre. On the product side Cohere is co-headquartered in Toronto, showing 111 open roles on one aggregator in early October 2026, alongside Waabi, Ada and Voiceflow. TELUS and BMO were both advertising AI engineer roles today.
Is a Master's degree required for AI engineer jobs in Toronto?
Not for applied roles. The posted bands show no clear mid-level premium, and what moves offers is a deployed system with an evaluation set and documented limitations. It does matter for Vector Institute research engineering and bank quantitative risk teams.
How do I get an AI engineer job in Toronto from India?
You need an employer to sponsor you through the Global Talent Stream, whose expedited LMIA runs about 10 business days against 48 to 60 standard. Check the NOC code on the offer, since 21311 excludes software engineers. Ontario also bans Canadian experience requirements in postings.
Can I do a live AI engineering course from Toronto?
Yes. 360DT's live classes run Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 11 PM IST, which is 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM Toronto time while Ontario is on EDT and 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM once the clocks go back on 1 November 2026. Classes are live online from India and fees are in Indian rupees.
What I Would Do in Your Position
Already in Toronto with a few years of software behind you? Ignore the research track and aim at the governance-heavy roles the banks are staffing ahead of May 2027. That is where posted bands run highest relative to how hard the work is, and proving a system behaves does not stop being valuable once the guideline lands. Outside Canada, get the skill first and the permit second, because the Global Talent Stream needs an employer who already wants you.
Either way the next step is identical: build one retrieval service, evaluate it properly, write down what it gets wrong. If you would rather do that with a live cohort and a deadline than alone on weekends, 360DT's AI Engineer course is 100 plus hours of that work over 16 weeks, and a free demo class shows the first module before you commit.
