A teacher to tech career change in India usually takes 7 to 12 months of part-time study while you keep teaching. The least crowded doors are Microsoft 365 Copilot and agent administration, data analysis, and technical writing. Expect a first offer near 5 to 8 LPA, not the 20 LPA figures circulating online.
- Your first offer will probably be below your teaching CTC. A PGT on 6.5 LPA commonly sees first offers at 5 to 7 LPA, recovering in year two.
- Copilot and agent administration is the least crowded door. Indeed India listed 75 M365 Copilot vacancies when we checked on 4 October 2026, and few applicants arrive from teaching.
- Do not aim at an "AI trainer" title. Glassdoor India showed 1,292 AI trainer jobs in its June 2026 count, with AI Product Trainer roles advertised at 3 to 6 LPA. Obvious fit, worse pay.
- A fundamentals exam is the cheapest credibility you can buy. Microsoft lists AB-900 at USD 99, 40 to 60 questions, pass mark 700 of 1000.
- Seven months is the floor, twelve is the norm, and only if you protect six to eight study hours a week in term time.
It is 9 PM on a Sunday, the lesson plans are done, and you are reading that someone with your years of experience could earn double in IT. Then you open a job portal and every listing asks for three years you do not have. That gap is where most teacher to tech plans die, and closing it needs a named target, not a general ambition.
Is a teacher to tech career change in India realistic for you?
Four questions, and most people who fail this switch failed these rather than the exam.
Hours: six to eight protected hours a week for about thirty weeks, in term time rather than holidays. If your school runs Saturday classes and you also take tuitions, the plan stretches to eighteen months. Runway: you need to absorb flat or lower pay for twelve to eighteen months. Tolerance for being junior again: twelve years of teaching converts to roughly zero relevant years on an applicant tracking system, and you will be reviewed by someone younger. A named target: "something in IT" is not one, but "Microsoft 365 Copilot and agent administrator" is, because you can point at the exam, the tools and the job title in live listings.
My honest caveat, which most career-switch content skips: if what you actually want is to stop teaching, a tech switch is an expensive and slow way to get there. Operations, L&D and customer success teams at ed-tech companies hire teachers directly, often at parity, with no certification at all. Take the tech route because you want the work.
Three doors from teaching into tech, and which one I would pick
Teachers get funnelled towards two paths online: learn to code, or become an AI trainer. Today's listing data says both are wrong for most people reading this.

Listing counts and advertised ranges were read from the public job boards named in each row on 4 October 2026. These are advertised ranges, not offers anyone is promised, and portal counts move week to week.
I would pick Copilot and agent administration, and here is the trade-off I accept: smaller market, lower ceiling. Senior Microsoft 365 administrator pay sits around 15 to 20 LPA on Glassdoor's reported range, while data engineering runs well past that. In exchange you get a funnel where you are not the four-hundredth computer science graduate on the pile, and a job description that reads like your current week: training sessions, usage policy, the one department that refuses to adopt anything, and documentation non-technical people can follow.
How to switch from teaching to IT without learning to code first
Look at what AB-900 covers: licence assignment, data access boundaries, agent governance, usage reporting, adoption. Microsoft delivers it as a proctored exam of 40 to 60 questions through Pearson VUE or Certiport. Nothing there requires you to write software. It requires you to understand permissions, explain a rule to a room that does not want to hear it, and write a one-page guide people read. A head of department who has run a CBSE board exam cycle has done harder stakeholder work than most Copilot rollouts demand.
What you build from zero is tool fluency: Microsoft 365 admin centre, Entra ID groups, sensitivity labels, Purview audit logs, the Copilot usage report. Start from where you are. Public aggregators put private CBSE and ICSE teachers at roughly 4 to 10 LPA, IB and IGCSE schools at 8 to 22 LPA, and entry-level private school pay at 15,000 to 30,000 a month. If you sit in that international school band, read the next chart carefully: this switch may cost you money for two years.

Built from Glassdoor India's Office 365 Administrator page, which reports an average near 6.61 LPA and a 25th to 75th percentile band of 4.63 to 8.80 LPA, plus its Senior Microsoft 365 Administrator range of roughly 15 to 20 LPA. Read 4 October 2026. Sample sizes on the senior figures are thin, so treat the top band as indicative.
Where you apply matters more than the band. IT services firms and managed service providers advertise L1 and L2 M365 analyst roles at 4.5 to 8 LPA and hire career switchers most readily. Global capability centres pay 7 to 14 LPA but want three years of IT experience first. Microsoft partners hiring adoption consultants at 6 to 12 LPA are the closest fit to what a teacher already does. Start with the first and treat the third as the year-two move.

Pay during the transition, and what usually goes wrong
- The pay cut is real and often lasts two years. Teachers leaving international schools take the biggest hit: 14 LPA in an IB school maps to no entry-level IT band.
- Seven months slips to twelve for most people. Board exam season, a sick child, one flat month. The plan survives interruptions; the seven-month figure does not.
- Thin markets mean long silences. With roughly 200 administrator listings nationally you can go five weeks without a callback while doing everything right.
- Nobody owes you credit for the B.Ed. Screening is keyword matching. If "Microsoft 365", "Entra ID" and "AB-900" are not on page one, no human reads the rest.
The thing nobody tells you over a desk: the hardest week is month six, not month one. Month one you are learning and it feels like progress. Month six you have a certification, a portfolio and thirty applications out, and nothing is happening. That silence is not feedback. Keep teaching, keep applying, and treat each rejection as a question about which keyword was missing.

You will be asked your current CTC and your expectation. Do not anchor on your teaching salary: it tells them nothing useful and invites a lowball. Say this instead. "I'm moving from twelve years in education into M365 administration, so I'm pricing myself against the role rather than my last payslip. For an L2 analyst with AB-900 and hands-on tenant work, the listings I'm seeing sit between 5.5 and 8 lakhs. I'd be comfortable in that range, and I'd rather talk about the shift rotation and the learning budget than argue over fifty thousand."
That names a market range instead of a demand, concedes you are entering junior, and moves the negotiation onto terms you can win. Once you are in, learn the ticket queue before trying to improve anything: log every repeated Copilot question for three weeks, then turn the top five into a one-page FAQ for the business. What I would do in your position
If you are teaching now, under forty, and can protect six hours a week, target Microsoft 365 Copilot and agent administration, sit AB-900 within five months, and apply to IT services firms and Microsoft partners rather than product companies. Take the first reasonable offer even at a small cut, because the second job is where the money is and you cannot reach it without the first. Do not resign until an offer is signed.
