India moved even faster — demand rose ~800% in the first three quarters of 2025 — but only 250–270 FDE roles are open nationally at any moment. Services firms are staffing rather than waiting: Coforge is taking its FDE bench from about 20 to 100 by FY26, EPAM from about 50 to 100.

The tiers in between fill the gap: MNC AI platforms ₹22–35L / ₹35–55L / ₹55–80L, consulting and SI ₹20–35L / ₹35–60L / ₹60–90L, India AI-first startups ₹18–28L + ESOP rising to ₹45–75L. Aggregators sit far below the top of that range — Glassdoor puts the all-India average near ₹13.2 LPA and Bengaluru around ₹17 LPA — because they average every tier together. FDE is a title, not a level, which is why the same words on a CV can mean ₹10L or ₹1.5 Cr.

Kubernetes, Docker and fine-tuning show up as helpful, not required. The scarce thing is not any single row — it is the combination: production engineering, applied AI, and the nerve to sit in front of the customer and own the outcome. Most engineers are trained for one of those three, which is precisely why the ones who can do all three set their own price.

Bengaluru is startups, GCCs and cloud HQs. Hyderabad rides the Microsoft and Google ecosystem, NCR is consulting and fintech GCCs, Mumbai and Pune are domain-heavy BFSI deployments, Chennai is manufacturing IT. Where published city bands exist they are wide — Bengaluru roughly ₹28–80 LPA, Chennai roughly ₹20–55 LPA — but the honest read is that FDE pay tracks employer tier far more than postcode. A remote-India seat at a global lab outpays a Bengaluru services role several times over, from anywhere in the country. Pick the tier, not the city.
Palantir's playbook, now everyone's
Palantir invented the Forward Deployed Engineer. Anthropic now runs the function inside its Applied AI team and OpenAI has adopted the same model. In a two-week stretch in May 2026, ServiceNow with Accenture, Cognizant, Anthropic and OpenAI all formalised Forward Deployed Engineering structures of their own.
20 → 100 FDEs
Coforge is scaling its FDE bench from roughly 20 to 100 by FY26, and EPAM from about 50 to 100. Indian services firms are building these teams right now, which is where a trained engineer realistically gets in.
A title, not a level
The same three words on a job post run from ₹10–18 LPA at an IT services AI practice to ₹90 LPA and beyond at a global lab hiring remote-India. Knowing which tier you are interviewing for is worth more than another year of experience.
