Built into the same programme — read the CCAR-F guideDP-900 (Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals) is the entry point to Microsoft’s data certification ladder. Four domains, 30 objectives in total, pass at 700 out of 1000, Fundamentals tier. Here is the honest framing you will not get from a course sales page: every single domain title begins with “Describe” or “Identify”. Not one says implement, configure, or build. DP-900 is a vocabulary exam, deliberately — and that is exactly what makes it valuable as a first credential and worthless as a last one.
One more thing worth knowing before you commit. Microsoft states plainly in the audience profile that you can use Azure Data Fundamentals to prepare for role-based certifications like Azure Database Administrator Associate or Azure Data Engineer Associate, “but it is not a prerequisite for any of them.” Nobody is forcing you through this gate. You take DP-900 because the vocabulary is genuinely missing, not because the ladder requires it.

What is the DP-900 certification?
Microsoft describes it as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of core data concepts and related Azure data services, aimed at someone “beginning to work with data in the cloud.” You are expected to be familiar with the concepts of relational and non-relational data, and with different workload types such as transactional and analytical.
That is a modest ask, and it should be read as one. DP-900 does not claim you can build a pipeline or tune a database. It claims you can hold a competent conversation about data architecture — which, for someone moving into a data team from operations, finance or support, is precisely the gap that stops them being taken seriously.
Go through the blueprint and every objective starts the same way: describe the features of structured data, identify options for data storage, describe normalization and why it is used, identify common SQL statements, describe Azure Cosmos DB APIs. Not one asks you to write a query, provision a database or load a file. If someone sells you DP-900 as a job-ready engineering credential, they have not read the blueprint.

Which domain pays back the most per hour
Here is something the weighting alone hides. Divide each domain’s share of the exam by the number of objectives it contains, and you get the marks each individual topic is worth. They are not equal — not remotely.

Calculated by us from the published blueprint: domain midpoint divided by objective count. Objectives per domain are 11 / 6 / 5 / 8, totalling 30. This is a study-planning heuristic, not a Microsoft-published figure — the exam does not literally allocate equal marks to every bullet.
Relational data is the highest-yield domain on the exam — 22.5% of the marks spread across only six objectives, or roughly 3.75% each. Core data concepts is the opposite: the joint-largest domain by weight, but its 27.5% is diluted across eleven objectives, worth about 2.50% each. If you are short on time, the relational domain is where an hour of study buys the most marks. Most study plans do the reverse, because core concepts comes first in the blueprint.

Representing data: features of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. Storage options: common data file formats, features of common data stores including databases, and identifying Azure datastores for common use cases. Workloads: features of transactional versus analytical workloads. Microsoft Fabric and Azure Databricks are named in the analytics domain, and Power BI gets three objectives of its own. That is not padding — it is DP-900 pointing directly at the two credentials most people take next: PL-300 for the Power BI half and DP-700 for the Fabric half. Learn these three objectives properly and you have already started both.
Inside domain 4What DP-900 will not do
It is not a prerequisite for any Associate certification — Microsoft says so explicitly. It will not get you hired as a data engineer on its own. And it will not teach you SQL: the objective is to identify common SQL statements, which is recognition, not fluency. Treat it as the first rung, and be planning the second before you sit it.

Where it will not carry you
- It is not a job-ready credential. Fundamentals tier, no hands-on objectives, no build tasks. It opens conversations; it does not close interviews.
- It carries no salary premium on its own. We say the same about every Fundamentals exam on this site, and it is true of this one too.
- Taken alone, it can look indecisive. A Fundamentals certificate with no Associate credential behind it two years later reads as a course someone started. Pair it with a plan.
What DP-900 leads to, and what that pays
We will not pretend otherwise: DP-900 is a Fundamentals credential and carries no salary premium of its own. But the exam itself names the three roles it leads to — there is a whole objective on the responsibilities of database administrators, data engineers and data analysts. So here is what those three roles actually pay.

None of these bands belongs to DP-900. They are the destination roles, shown so you can choose a direction before you spend four weeks studying. DP-900 is worth taking because it makes the next exam easier and the interview conversation possible — not because it moves a number. Anyone telling you a Fundamentals certificate raises salary is selling something.

Why DP-900 is still worth four weeks
1. It is the cheapest way to find out if data is for you
Thirty objectives, no hands-on requirement, four weeks of evenings. Compared with committing to an Associate track and discovering three months in that you dislike the work, DP-900 is a remarkably cheap experiment — and you keep a real Microsoft credential either way.
2. The vocabulary gap is real and it is visible in interviews
Structured versus semi-structured. Transactional versus analytical. Normalization. Blob versus Files versus Table storage. Batch versus streaming. These come up constantly in data conversations, and not having them marks a candidate out immediately. DP-900 closes that gap in a way that reading blog posts does not, because an exam forces completeness.
3. It maps directly onto the two credentials that follow
The analytics domain names Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks and Power BI. Those are not trivia — they are the subject matter of DP-700 and PL-300. Passing DP-900 means arriving at either exam already fluent in what the products are for.
4. Fundamentals credentials do not decay the same way
Microsoft’s annual renewal requirement names associate, expert and specialty certifications. Fundamentals sits outside that list, so DP-900 is unusually low-maintenance compared with the Associate exams above it — though as always, confirm the current policy on Microsoft Learn rather than taking any guide’s word for it.
Your 4-week DP-900 roadmap
Ordered by marks-per-objective rather than by blueprint order — the relational and non-relational domains come early because they are the highest-yield study on the exam. Assume 4–5 hours per week.
Relational data — the highest-yield domain first
Features of relational data. Normalization and why it is used. Common SQL statements — recognition, not fluency. Common database objects. Then the Azure SQL family: Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance and SQL Server on Azure VMs, and what distinguishes each. Finally, Azure database services for open-source systems. Six objectives, 20–25% of the exam, done in week one.
Non-relational data — the smallest domain
Azure Blob storage, Azure Files and Table storage: what each is for and, more importantly, when you would choose one over another. Then Cosmos DB — its use cases and its APIs. Five objectives, 15–20% of the exam. Two weeks in, you have covered roughly 40% of the marks.
Analytics workloads
Considerations for data ingestion and processing. Options for analytical data stores. Microsoft cloud services for large-scale analytics, including Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric. Batch versus streaming, and the real-time services. Then Power BI: capabilities, data model features, and choosing appropriate visualizations. Eight objectives.
Core concepts, practice assessment, book the exam
Structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. Data file formats and common data stores. Azure datastores by use case. Transactional versus analytical workloads. The responsibilities of DBAs, data engineers and data analysts. Eleven objectives, but they are the broadest and easiest — which is why they come last. Then the free official practice assessment, and book.
Register with a personal MSA account, not a work or school account. Exam records tied to an organisational account are unrecoverable if you leave — and for a first credential you intend to build a ladder on, that record matters.

DP-900 frequently asked questions
Is DP-900 worth it, or should I go straight to DP-700?
If you already work with data professionally — SQL, ETL, reporting — go straight to DP-700. DP-900 is not a prerequisite and Microsoft says so explicitly. If you are entering data from another field, DP-900 is four weeks well spent, because DP-700 assumes a vocabulary it will not teach you.
Do I need any hands-on experience for DP-900?
No. Every objective on the blueprint begins with describe or identify — there is not a single implement, configure or build task. You are being tested on understanding what data services are for and when each is appropriate, not on operating them. Hands-on practice still helps the concepts stick, but the exam does not require it.
Is DP-900 a prerequisite for DP-700 or the Azure DBA certification?
No. Microsoft states in the audience profile that you can use Azure Data Fundamentals to prepare for role-based certifications like Azure Database Administrator Associate or Azure Data Engineer Associate, but that it is not a prerequisite for any of them. It is a genuine choice, not a gate.
Which DP-900 domain should I study first?

How long does it take to prepare for DP-900?
Around four weeks at 4–5 hours per week for someone new to cloud data — the roadmap on this page. People already working in IT often compress it to two weeks. It is the smallest blueprint in our Microsoft catalogue at 30 objectives, against 54 for DP-700.
Does DP-900 expire?
Microsoft’s stated annual renewal requirement applies to associate, expert and specialty certifications. DP-900 is Fundamentals tier, so it sits outside that list — but confirm the current policy on Microsoft Learn before relying on it, since certification policies do change.
Will DP-900 get me a data job?
On its own, realistically no — and we would rather say that than sell you something. It is a Fundamentals credential with no hands-on component. What it does is make you credible in a conversation, give a CV with no data history something real on it, and make the Associate exam that follows meaningfully easier. Treat it as the first rung with the second already planned.
DP-900 or PL-300 as a first certification?
If you are comfortable in Excel and want to be employable quickly, go straight to PL-300 — it is an Associate credential that recruiters filter on by exam code. If cloud data concepts feel genuinely unfamiliar, DP-900 first will make PL-300 easier rather than slower, since its analytics domain already covers Power BI capabilities and data models.
